That remains true for PS5 models with a disc drive: inserting a PS3 game disc will not let you play the game. Sony states this directly in its US backward-compatibility guidance.
What can you do if you own a PS3 disc?
Play it on a PS3
A PS3 console is the direct way to use a physical PS3 game disc. Sony describes the CECH-2101A/CECH-2101B model group as designed to play PS3-format software; that statement is specific to those models, not a claim that every PS3 revision has identical features. See the PS3 system manual.
Look for a separate PS4 or PS5 release
Some games have a remaster, remake, or port for a newer console, but this must be checked for each title. A PS3 disc does not automatically upgrade to, or run as, a PS4 or PS5 game. Sony’s backward-compatibility guidance covers PS4 games on PS5 and explicitly excludes PS3 discs.
Check the Classics Catalog for streaming
Sony’s US PlayStation Plus page describes streaming access to hundreds of PS3 and PS2 games through the Classics Catalog. This is access to a catalog game over the internet—not a way to play your own PS3 disc. Availability depends on the specific title, membership plan, and market, so check the catalog for your region before subscribing.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Sony’s US streaming support page states that catalog streaming requires the correct membership plan and a broadband connection of at least 5 Mbps. For 1080p streaming, Sony says the game must support 1080p and the connection must be at least 15 Mbps. While streaming, some features may be restricted, including Remote Play, Share Play, and broadcasting. These are Sony’s stated US requirements, not a guarantee of performance on every network or in every country. See Sony’s game-streaming support instructions.
Why a PS5 disc drive or Blu-ray support does not help
Being able to insert a disc is not the same as being able to run its game. Sony lists supported PS5 media formats separately from game compatibility; its PS5 game guidance still says PS3 game discs are unsupported. A supported Blu-ray format therefore does not make a PS3 game playable.

The original PS5 Digital Edition CFI-1000 model group does not support disc-based games or media. Sony says a separate drive can be added to certain later Digital Edition groups, but a drive does not change the PS3-disc compatibility rule. Check Sony’s PS5 media-disc guidance for media formats and model-specific details.
A PS3-to-PS4 upgrade that needs the disc will not work on PS5
If you obtained a digital PS4 version through Sony’s PS3-to-PS4 upgrade program but that copy still requires the PS3 disc for authentication, Sony says it will not play on PS5. The PS3 disc cannot serve as the required disc on a PS5, even if the upgraded PS4 game is digital.

PS4 disc compatibility is a different rule
Sony says the overwhelming majority of its 4,000+ PS4 games are playable on PS5, while noting that some games may have errors or different features and that certain titles remain PS4-only. That broad PS4 compatibility does not extend to PS3 discs.
For a PS4 game disc, Sony’s instructions are to insert it into a PS5 with a disc drive, install an update if needed, and leave the disc inserted whenever you play. PS4 game discs cannot be used with a PS5 Digital Edition. See Sony’s PS5 backward-compatibility guidance.
