Usually, another player cannot get your public IP just by matching with you, joining your Fortnite party, or using Fortnite’s built-in chat. Epic documents Fortnite clients connecting to its servers, which supports the conclusion that ordinary matches are server-mediated—not direct connections between players’ home networks. That is not a blanket guarantee for every feature or future update, but the more practical risks are suspicious links, external services, malware, and account scams.
What an IP address can—and cannot—tell someone
Your public IP address is used to route internet traffic. Epic and other online services can receive it when your device connects to them; Epic’s privacy policy says it collects IP addresses and may use them to derive general location information.
An IP address may identify your internet provider and suggest a broad geographic area. It does not normally reveal your exact home address, real name, passwords, Epic account, or give someone automatic control of your router or console. An IP can still be misused for nuisance or denial-of-service traffic, harassment, or as one clue in a broader attempt to target you. Location estimates can be wrong, and the address may be shared or reassigned depending on your ISP and connection.
Can Fortnite players see your IP?
Joining a Battle Royale match
Not normally. Epic’s Fortnite client documentation describes the client connecting to a central server, and its support documentation describes latency as the time data takes to travel between your device and Fortnite’s servers. In ordinary matchmaking, each player communicates with Fortnite’s infrastructure; seeing one another in the same match does not itself establish a direct connection between your homes.

That is a reasonable conclusion from Epic’s published architecture, not an explicit security guarantee covering every mode, feature, platform service, creator island, or future change. Epic Online Services documents peer-to-peer networking as a general developer capability, but that does not establish that standard Fortnite Battle Royale exposes players’ IP addresses to each other.
Fortnite lobby, party, friend request, or text chat
There is no reliable evidence in the reviewed official material that simply sharing a Fortnite lobby or party reveals your public IP to other players. A party is a social grouping; an invite, friend request, display name, or text conversation is not by itself proof of an IP disclosure. A display name alone does not reveal a network address, although reusing the same name across public profiles can make it easier for someone to connect your accounts.
Party and communication settings control who can join or contact you; they are not IP-hiding switches. Epic explains the current controls in its Fortnite party and communication settings guide.

Built-in voice chat
Fortnite’s built-in voice chat is documented as a Fortnite service. The fact that voice chat exists does not show that players receive one another’s public IP addresses. Epic’s general services also support voice and peer-to-peer capabilities, but that is not evidence about the exact network path for Fortnite’s current voice feature. There is no verified basis in the cited official sources for claiming that ordinary Fortnite voice chat routinely exposes your IP to other players.
Discord, console party chat, and other third-party voice apps have their own privacy and networking models. Be especially cautious if a stranger asks you to leave Fortnite for a direct call, click a “verification” link, or visit a site to join a tournament or claim a reward.
Creator-made islands and external links
The available sources do not establish that an ordinary island creator automatically receives visitors’ public IP addresses merely because they enter an island. Treat anything that takes you outside Fortnite as a separate trust decision: a website, QR code, Discord invite, file download, or form can create risks that are not the same as playing the island itself.

How IP addresses are more plausibly exposed
- Tracking or IP-logger links: a link sent in chat, Discord, social media, or a website may reveal network information to the site operator when opened.
- Fake giveaways or verification pages: “free V-Bucks,” tournament registration, or account verification scams may collect personal or account information, or prompt unsafe downloads.
- External calls or other services: some direct-connection services and unrelated peer-to-peer games have different networking models from standard Fortnite matchmaking.
- Malware or a malicious browser extension: compromising a device can expose more than an IP address.
- Information shared elsewhere: a livestream, another game, a home-hosted service, or a reused username may be the actual source of information later blamed on Fortnite.
A page showing a Fortnite server address does not prove it shows another player’s home IP. When evaluating such a claim, check whether it concerns Fortnite specifically or peer-to-peer gaming generally, and whether it distinguishes a game server’s address from a player’s address.

What “I pulled your IP” might mean
The claim alone is not proof. It could be a bluff intended to frighten you; an address collected through a link or another service; an old address that has changed or been reassigned; or a real but limited technical detail that does not identify your exact household. If your connection is suffering sustained, unusual disruption at the same time, take that seriously—but do not assume a threat proves who caused it or how they obtained information.
What to do if someone threatens you
- Do not click or open anything they sent. Avoid “IP checker,” giveaway, tournament, and verification links, and do not download files from them.
- Stop engaging, then block and report the account through Fortnite or the platform where the contact occurred.
- Save evidence: keep screenshots, usernames, timestamps, and message links where available. Do not publish a suspected IP or personal information.
- Secure your accounts. Use a strong, unique password and enable two-factor authentication for Epic and the associated email account. Review linked accounts and account activity in Epic’s security settings.
- If you clicked a suspicious link, close it, do not run downloads, and from a trusted device change your Epic and email passwords. Remove suspicious browser extensions and run reputable security software. Contact Epic if you lose account access or see unauthorized purchases; contact your payment provider about unauthorized transactions.
- If your connection is being disrupted, contact your ISP. Explain that you suspect targeted denial-of-service traffic and ask whether the address can be changed or mitigation is available. Restarting a router may change an address on some connections, but this depends on the ISP and is not guaranteed. Keep router firmware current, use a unique administrator password, and disable remote administration if you do not need it.
- Escalate threats of doxxing, swatting, or physical harm. Tell a parent, guardian, or trusted adult—especially if you are under 18. Preserve evidence and contact local law enforcement about a specific, credible threat. Do not confront or retaliate against the person.

Fortnite privacy and communication settings
To limit who can contact you through Fortnite, Epic’s documented path is:
- Open Fortnite and select your profile icon.
- Open Settings, then select COMMUNICATION.
- Set voice and text chat to Everybody, Friends, Team Members, and Connections, Friends Only, or Off.
Party joinability is also controlled from the profile area. Joinable allows friends and connections to join; Invite Only requires an invitation or approved join request. Epic says party joinability defaults to Invite Only for players who indicate they are under 18. Parental controls can further restrict settings; Epic says children under 10 have a maximum chat setting of Friends Only. Labels and availability may vary with platform, age settings, or updates, so consult Epic’s current settings instructions if a menu differs.
Voice reporting is separate from IP privacy. Epic says voice reporting is always on for players under 18. Players 18 and older can choose Always On or Off When Possible; the latter applies only to some Party Channels, while reporting remains on in Game Channels. When enabled, the last five minutes of voice chat are stored locally, and audio is sent to Epic if a report is submitted. These moderation controls do not mean other players can see your IP. Would a VPN help?
A VPN may mask your home public IP from some websites or services you connect to through it, but it is optional—not a required Fortnite safety measure. The available evidence does not indicate that ordinary Fortnite matchmaking is a routine player-to-player IP leak. A VPN cannot undo a tracking link you already opened, prevent phishing or account takeover, remove malware, or hide information you post publicly. It also cannot guarantee lower latency; it may add delay, cause connection or matchmaking issues, or be complicated to set up for a console or household network.
For most players worried about a Fortnite threat, avoiding suspicious links, blocking and reporting, using account security, and limiting unwanted contact are more directly useful first steps. Disabling crossplay is not established as an IP-protection fix.
