If a suspicious trade or market transaction is still on hold, act now: you may be able to cancel it before the items leave your account. Account access, pending transactions, completed item transfers, and unauthorized payments are separate problems with different remedies.
What can Steam help you recover?

Steam’s Item Restoration Policy says Support does not restore items that have left an account through trades, market transactions, deletions, or gifting. Valve announced the policy change on March 9, 2016, explaining that items can change hands and restoration could require duplicating items or taking them from an innocent recipient. See Valve’s announcement. Contacting Support is still appropriate for a compromised account, but do not count on it reversing a completed transfer.
What to do first if your Steam account was hacked
Contain the compromise before spending time pursuing missing inventory. Use only Steam’s official website or client; do not follow links sent by someone claiming to be Support.
- Secure the email account linked to Steam. Change its password, enable the email provider’s two-factor authentication, and check for unfamiliar sessions or recovery details. Steam advises securing email because a compromised email account can enable further access.
- Check and clean the devices you used to sign in. Scan for malware, keyloggers, spyware, suspicious browser extensions, cheats, fake utilities, or other unfamiliar software. If a device remains compromised, changing passwords on it may expose the new credentials too.
- Change your Steam password through an official Steam page or trusted client after securing email and the device. Steam’s stolen-account guidance recommends scanning the computer and changing the associated email password before resetting Steam credentials.
- End unfamiliar sessions. Review authorized devices and use Steam’s sign-out-everywhere or deauthorization control if you see a device you do not recognize. Steam’s account security recommendations cover checking devices and signing out.
- Inspect pending transactions. Look at pending trades and market activity; cancel an unauthorized transaction if Steam still offers that option.
- Restore account protections. Confirm Steam Guard settings and the Mobile Authenticator. Review account details, trade history, Community Market activity, and purchase or Wallet history for changes you did not make.
- Report the attacker and contact official Support. Report the offending profile and use Steam Support for account recovery or unauthorized purchases. A report does not guarantee that items will be returned.
How to recover access to a hijacked account
Start at Steam Support’s account-stolen page and follow the stolen or hijacked account route. Complete the ownership checks Steam presents, then reset the password after securing your email and scanning the device. The exact verification information requested can vary; Steam does not promise a particular recovery time.

Steam Support representatives will never ask you for your Steam password. Do not disclose passwords, Steam Guard codes, QR approvals, or account files to anyone who contacts you. If you regain access but the inventory is missing, that means account recovery succeeded; it does not mean Steam will recreate transferred items.
Can you cancel a pending trade or market transaction?
Sometimes. A held transaction has not yet completed, so an account owner may be able to cancel it before the items leave the account. Check the transaction status and available controls promptly using Steam directly. A completed trade is different: Steam’s trade-offer guidance says accepted trades are final.
Steam says trade holds can last up to 15 days. The hold’s actual duration depends on circumstances such as account security state, the relationship between traders, transaction type, and other restrictions; not every transaction has a 15-day hold. Steam says the normal hold is removed when the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator has been enabled for at least seven days. That reduces the window in which a user might stop an attacker’s transaction, but it does not make completed transfers recoverable. See Steam’s explanation of trade and market holds.

Canceling a held trade triggers a seven-day trading cooldown for protection, and Steam Support cannot remove that cooldown. Steam also lists other trading and Community Market restrictions that can follow security changes, including password or authenticator changes and sign-ins from newly authorized devices; Support cannot modify those restrictions. Why Steam Guard may not have stopped the theft
Steam Guard adds protection, but it is not a guarantee against account compromise or item loss. Steam identifies risks including compromised email, malware on an authorized device, phishing, stolen authentication information, and fraudulent requests that persuade a user to approve an action. An attacker who gains access to an active session or tricks someone into confirming a trade may bypass the protection a user expects from an authenticator.
Review Steam’s Steam Guard information and its Steam Guard overview. If a suspicious transaction was confirmed from your account, that does not by itself establish that Steam will reverse it; the published trade guidance treats accepted trades as final.

How to report the scammer or hijacker
- Open the offending Steam profile.
- Click the three-dot menu and choose Report Player.
- Select the closest offense category, briefly describe what happened, and submit the report.
Steam recommends reporting through the profile because it includes information about the interaction between accounts. Follow Steam’s reporting instructions. Reporting may help Steam respond to the account, but it is not an item-recovery process.
What if the hacker made unauthorized purchases?
Inventory restoration and payment disputes are not the same issue. Review your Steam purchase history and Wallet activity, then use Steam’s item and purchase support routes or the relevant official payment-help flow to report charges you did not authorize. If payment went through a bank, card, or other provider, contact that provider as appropriate. Refund decisions depend on the payment method, timing, evidence, account status, and whether the transaction was made through Steam or another platform; no refund is guaranteed.
Do not start with a chargeback without first understanding the possible consequences for your Steam account and discussing the issue with Steam or your payment provider. A chargeback is a payment remedy to consider with the provider, not a way to retrieve traded inventory.

Recovery scams to avoid
After a theft, scammers may pose as Steam employees, moderators, middlemen, or specialists who claim they can retrieve skins. Do not pay anyone promising item recovery, and never send items to a supposed safe account. Do not give out your password, Steam Guard code, QR confirmation, or account files, or approve an unexpected login or trade request. Use Steam Support only through the official Steam site or client; Steam’s security guidance and account recovery page explain safe handling of account issues.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will Steam return stolen CS2 skins?
If the skins have left your account through a completed trade or market transaction, Steam’s published policy generally says Support will not restore them. If a transaction is still held, check whether you can cancel it before delivery.
Can Steam reverse a trade scam?
Steam says accepted trades are final, and its item-restoration policy generally excludes items that have left an account through a trade. You can report the scam and contact Support about account compromise, but a report does not guarantee reversal.

Can I recover deleted Steam items?
Steam’s published Item Restoration Policy includes deleted items among those Support does not restore.
Why can’t Steam simply take the items back?
