Yes. You can send a YouTube Live broadcast from Streamlabs Desktop without a capture card: Streamlabs acts as the software encoder, connecting to YouTube with a server URL and stream key. For a video file already on your computer, the capture card is not the missing piece; the key question is whether your installed Streamlabs Desktop version offers a suitable local-video source and playback controls. The current official guides reviewed confirm the encoder and scene workflow, but do not establish those file-source steps.
Why a capture card is not required
A capture card is typically used to bring a signal from another device, such as a console or camera, into a computer. In this scenario, the video is already a file on the computer running Streamlabs Desktop. YouTube’s encoder workflow connects streaming software to YouTube Live using the Live server URL and stream key; its instructions do not require capture hardware for that software-encoder setup. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain the platform connection.
That answers the hardware question, but it does not verify that every current Streamlabs Desktop build has the same local-file source, looping option, or playback controls. Streamlabs’ official guides document adding sources to a scene and going live, not the precise current procedure for selecting and playing a prerecorded local file. Check the source options in your installed version before relying on a particular menu path or unattended playback behavior.
What the setup involves
There are two parts: create a scene in Streamlabs Desktop that presents the video and its audio, then connect the encoder to a YouTube Live event. Streamlabs documents configuring scene sources and starting a stream to a chosen platform in its Desktop getting-started guide.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Check the local-video source in your installed app. In Streamlabs Desktop, inspect the scene’s available source types and confirm that a source can play the video file you intend to broadcast. Confirm any playback controls you need, such as whether playback continues or repeats. The current official guides cited here do not specify those local-file controls, so do not assume looping or unattended playback without checking the app.
- Connect Streamlabs to YouTube Live. You can sign in to YouTube in Streamlabs and use Go Live to create an event. Alternatively, create the event in YouTube’s dashboard first, then select it in Streamlabs’ Go Live window before confirming. These are the two paths described in Streamlabs’ guide to going-live issues.
- Check the picture and sound before starting. Use the preview to confirm that the intended video is visible. Check the mixer for audio activity from the file and make sure the levels are usable; a visible video with missing or incorrectly routed audio is not ready to broadcast. Streamlabs’ Quick Start Guide recommends checking the preview and audio activity.
- Confirm the selected YouTube event, then go live. Verify that Streamlabs is targeting the intended event in the Go Live flow before confirming. Watch the preview and audio as the broadcast begins.
Settings that affect the broadcast
Streamlabs’ Quick Start Guide explains the relationships that matter when configuring output: set output resolution equal to or lower than the base resolution; frame rate affects motion smoothness; higher resolution and frame rate require more bitrate; and the encoder choice determines whether the CPU or GPU performs encoding. These are general setup considerations, not a recommended bitrate for every connection or video. Choose output settings your hardware and upload connection can sustain, and check YouTube’s live preview for warnings before treating the stream as ready.
Check computer compatibility
Streamlabs’ Quick Start Guide, published May 20, 2026, lists these requirements. They are the guide’s stated minimum and recommended configurations, not an independent compatibility guarantee.

Audio notes for local video
Before broadcasting, confirm that the video’s sound is reaching the Streamlabs mixer and is not muted or routed to the wrong output. Streamlabs notes that desktop-audio capture on macOS requires audio-routing software. That is relevant if your workflow depends on capturing computer playback rather than audio delivered directly by the selected source. Use the preview and mixer activity to catch a silent stream before it reaches viewers.
Copyright and YouTube Live checks
Having permission to broadcast a file is separate from whether the encoder can play it. Before streaming, make sure you have the rights needed for the video and its audio, including music, game footage, and any third-party material. Check YouTube’s current live-stream rules and the event’s status in YouTube Studio; a successful connection from Streamlabs does not establish that the content is cleared for broadcast.

Troubleshooting checks
- The video is absent from the preview: Recheck the scene’s sources and confirm the selected source is the local-video source you intended. Since the cited official guides do not establish its exact controls, consult the installed app’s current source options rather than relying on an assumed menu sequence.
- The preview is visible but silent: Check the mixer for activity, confirm the source’s audio routing and level, and verify that the intended audio is not muted. On macOS, desktop audio capture may require audio-routing software.
- The wrong YouTube event is selected: Reopen Streamlabs’ Go Live flow and select the intended event, or create the event in YouTube first and choose it in Streamlabs before confirming.
- The stream will not start: Verify the YouTube event and encoder connection details, including the server URL and stream key, then follow YouTube’s current encoder instructions and Streamlabs’ going-live troubleshooting guide.
- The video stops or fails to repeat: Do not assume continuous looping. Confirm whether your installed version exposes the necessary playback behavior and test it before scheduling or relying on an unattended broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
