The PS4 Media Player supports the MKV container when its video is H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile Level 4.2 and its audio is MP3, AAC LC, or AC-3 (Dolby Digital). An .mkv extension by itself does not guarantee playback.
What MKV files does PS4 support?
MKV is a container: it can hold different video and audio streams. Sony’s PS4 compatibility rules apply to the streams inside the file, not just the filename.

PS4 also supports other containers, including AVI, MP4, MPEG-2 PS, MPEG-2 TS, AVCHD (.m2ts/.mts), and XAVC S (.mp4), each with its own codec limitations. Changing an extension does not convert the underlying streams.
How to play an MKV from a USB drive
Use a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive and put the video in a folder at the drive’s root. Then open it through Media Player.

- Format the USB drive as exFAT or FAT32. Formatting erases existing data, so copy anything important elsewhere first.
- Using a computer, create a folder in the USB drive’s root directory and place the MKV file in that folder. Do not bury the folder several levels deep.
- On the PS4, open Media Player from the content area.
- Connect the USB drive, choose USB, open the folder, and select the video.
If the drive does not appear, check its file system and reconnect it directly to the console. A network media server follows different discovery and compatibility rules than local USB playback.
Why an MKV will not play on PS4
The video codec or profile is unsupported
Many MKV files use H.265/HEVC, VP9, or an H.264 profile or level outside Sony’s stated MKV support. Use a media-information utility on a computer to identify the video codec, H.264 profile, and level. If the video is not H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile Level 4.2, transcode it to that specification.

The audio codec is unsupported
MKV files may contain DTS, TrueHD, or other audio formats that are not among PS4’s listed MKV choices. Check every audio stream. Convert the audio to MP3, AAC LC, or AC-3 (Dolby Digital), or create a new file with a supported stream.
The USB layout or file system is wrong
PS4 USB playback requires FAT32 or exFAT and a folder in the drive’s root directory. A file placed directly on the root, on an NTFS drive, or inside an incorrectly mounted partition may not be listed.

The file is too large or has a problematic data type
Sony cautions that some files may fail because of data type or file size. FAT32 also has a 4 GB maximum size for an individual file; exFAT avoids that particular limit. If a large file still fails, test a shorter sample after confirming its streams.
Restrictions or server behavior interfere
Content restrictions can block access, and playback through a media server may be limited by the server’s supported formats, transcoding settings, or network delivery. Testing the same compatible file from a correctly prepared USB drive helps separate a file problem from a server problem.

A practical troubleshooting order
- Inspect the streams. Record the container, video codec, H.264 profile and level, audio codec, resolution, and file size.
- Compare them with Sony’s MKV rules. Video must be H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile Level 4.2; audio must be MP3, AAC LC, or AC-3.
- Convert only what is necessary. Transcode an unsupported video or audio stream, or remux when the streams are already supported but the container structure is troublesome.
- Prepare the USB again. Use FAT32 or exFAT, create a root-level folder, and copy the resulting file into it.
- Retry in Media Player. Select USB and open the file from that folder.
- Isolate the cause. Try a known-compatible, small test file. If it works, the original file’s streams, size, or data structure are the likely cause; if it does not, revisit the drive format, folder placement, console restrictions, or media-server path.
This sequence follows Sony’s documented codec and USB requirements; it is a compatibility diagnostic rather than a claim that every compliant file has been independently tested.
What to check before choosing a playback method

The bottom line for PS4 owners
PS4 can play MKV files, but compatibility is conditional. Verify the internal video and audio streams, then use an exFAT- or FAT32-formatted USB drive with the file in a folder at the drive’s root. When an MKV fails, the filename is rarely the useful clue—the codec profile, audio format, file size, USB preparation, restrictions, or server path usually explains the problem.
