Yes. Create a separate OBS scene for each sermon layout, then switch scenes while OBS keeps the same encoder feed running to YouTube. A scene change changes what viewers see; it does not end the YouTube stream.
How to switch between two sermon scenes without ending the stream
- Create the layouts: In OBS, add a scene for each sermon layout, such as a camera view and a slide or scripture layout. Add the camera, text, graphics, and other sources each scene needs. OBS scenes are layouts assembled from sources, and you can create and name multiple scenes. OBS Studio Overview Guide.
- Choose how the change looks: Select Cut for an immediate switch or Fade for a gradual transition. OBS also lets you configure transition duration. Rehearse the choice with the actual sermon sources so the change looks as intended.
- Choose how the operator switches: You can select the other scene, use Quick Transitions, or assign and use hotkeys. For a volunteer who wants to check the next layout before viewers see it, enable Studio Mode. The live scene remains on air while the operator prepares the other scene; press Transition when it is ready.
- Connect and start YouTube: In OBS, use the YouTube stream URL and stream key, then start the encoder stream. Confirm the preview in YouTube Live Control Room before the service. YouTube documents starting and ending an encoder stream separately from changing OBS scenes: YouTube encoder setup.
- Switch scenes during the service: Keep the encoder feed running as you change scenes. Check that the picture and sermon audio are correct after each change; YouTube recommends preview checks and monitoring audio and video during a live stream. YouTube live-streaming tips.
- End the broadcast when the service is over: Stop the encoder feed and end the stream in YouTube’s workflow. Do not treat an OBS scene change as ending the broadcast.
Which OBS switching workflow should you use?
| Choice | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Cut or Fade | Cut for an instant change; Fade when a gradual transition suits the service. | OBS supports both and allows transition duration to be configured. |
| Scene selection, Quick Transition, or hotkey | Choose the control the operator can use reliably during the service. | Rehearse it with the actual scenes and sources. |
| Studio Mode | Useful when the operator should prepare and inspect the next layout before it goes live. | The current live scene stays visible until the operator triggers Transition. |
Rehearse the change before the service
- Confirm that both scenes contain the intended camera, text, graphics, and other sources.
- Test each transition and operator control, including any hotkey, before going live.
- Check the YouTube preview and verify the audio and video after switching layouts.
- Keep the OBS encoder feed running between scenes; stop the feed and end the YouTube stream only when the broadcast is finished.
Or let it run in the cloud
OBS scene switching is the direct DIY answer when you are producing the service live. For a different use case—keeping uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream—StreamNeo runs in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
