Yes—Xbox Series X|S and PS5 players can play together when the specific game supports cross-play between those platforms. Cross-play is a feature of a game, not a universal connection between the consoles, so check the exact edition and multiplayer mode before buying or inviting a friend.
How to tell whether a game supports Xbox–PS5 cross-play
Look for an explicit statement that the current version supports cross-platform multiplayer between Xbox Series X|S and PS5. A game being available on both consoles does not guarantee that players can join the same match. Support may also be limited to certain modes.
Microsoft’s Xbox Store cross-platform multiplayer catalog can help you find candidates, but treat it as a discovery list rather than a guarantee about every edition or mode. Confirm compatibility on the game publisher’s current official page.
- Platforms: Does the current edition support both Xbox Series X|S and PS5?
- Modes: Which online modes include cross-play?
- Friends and invites: Do you need an in-game account or friend ID to find each other?
- Requirements: Are matching editions, linked accounts, updates, or console subscriptions needed?
- Exceptions: Are any modes, progression systems, or economies platform-specific?

Minecraft
Minecraft Bedrock Edition supports cross-play between PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, as well as other Bedrock devices. The PS5 release announcement says PS5 players can play with friends across Bedrock devices. Make sure both players use Bedrock: Minecraft’s edition comparison explains that Java cross-play is among Windows, Mac, and Linux, while Bedrock covers console and mobile cross-play. Java and Bedrock players cannot join the same multiplayer servers.

Fortnite
Epic’s Fortnite crossplay instructions describe a PlayStation setting called “Allow Cross Platform Play” under Account and Privacy > Gameplay Privacy. Epic warns that switching cross-play off can leave some modes playable only in Solo. Xbox controls are handled through Xbox network settings, so the steps are not identical on both consoles.
How to invite a friend on the other console
Do not assume that the Xbox or PlayStation friends list alone will find someone on the other platform. Many games use their own account system, friend search, or invitation flow. For Madden NFL 26, use EA Connect and search by EA ID or platform identifier. Other games may use a different in-game method, so follow that title’s official instructions.

What to check if cross-play is not working
- Confirm the exact game and mode. Check that its current edition supports Xbox Series X|S-to-PS5 play in the mode you want.
- Match editions and updates. Install the current update on both consoles. In Minecraft, both players need Bedrock; Java and Bedrock do not share multiplayer servers.
- Check cross-play settings. Make sure the game has not disabled cross-play. For Fortnite on PlayStation, go to Account and Privacy > Gameplay Privacy > Allow Cross Platform Play.
- Use the game’s friend system. Search by the game account ID or platform identifier, or send an invite through the game’s own menu.
- Check accounts, permissions, and subscriptions. Minecraft console multiplayer requires a Microsoft account, multiplayer permissions, and Xbox Game Pass Core or PlayStation Plus. Requirements can differ by game; PlayStation notes that some games require PS Plus for online multiplayer.
- Check service status and maintenance notices. EA notes that maintenance, updates, downtime, and matchmaking changes can affect Madden NFL 26 cross-play availability.
Does cross-play mean every feature is shared?
No. Cross-play means players on supported platforms can play together in the specified circumstances; it does not necessarily mean every mode, account feature, economy, or progression system is shared. Madden NFL 26, for example, supports cross-play in named modes but does not share the Ultimate Team Auction House across platforms. Check the game’s own compatibility details for exceptions.
Compatibility and service details can change. Check the specific game’s current official page and version before purchasing or arranging a session.
