What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Usually, no. Minecraft: Bedrock Edition does not provide a documented, supported way to assign the client a fixed amount of RAM through the Minecraft Launcher. The familiar -Xmx4G and -Xmx8G settings are for Java Edition, which runs on the Java Virtual Machine.
For Bedrock, performance problems are normally addressed by lowering render and simulation distances, disabling demanding visual effects, testing without add-ons or resource packs, and reducing the workload on your device or server.
Why Java RAM tutorials do not work for Bedrock
Java Edition exposes JVM arguments in its Launcher installation settings. An argument such as -Xmx4G sets the maximum heap size available to the Java game process. Mojang’s memory-allocation instructions are explicitly for Minecraft: Java Edition.
Do not add -Xmx arguments to Bedrock. If a tutorial tells you to change JVM arguments, it is a Java Edition tutorial unless it is specifically discussing a separate Java-based tool or server. Changing Java installation settings will not allocate RAM to the Minecraft for Windows Bedrock app.

Bedrock can use system memory dynamically, but that is different from giving the client a user-selected allocation. There is no documented Bedrock client RAM slider comparable to Java’s JVM settings.
What to change in Bedrock instead
Lower Render Distance
Render Distance controls how far away blocks, entities, and other visible objects are drawn. A higher value increases graphics and world-loading work, so lowering it is usually the best first test for low FPS, stuttering, or slow chunk rendering.
Microsoft documents a broad Bedrock range of 4–96 chunks, but the actual maximum depends on the device, platform, world type, and server context. That range does not mean every phone, console, laptop, Realm, or server supports 96 chunks.
- Lower Render Distance substantially.
- Play in the affected world for several minutes.
- Increase the value gradually until performance becomes unacceptable.
More RAM alone cannot make an integrated GPU, older phone, Switch-class hardware, slow storage device, or thermally throttled laptop render a high distance smoothly.

Lower Simulation Distance
Simulation Distance controls how far the game processes gameplay activity, including mob behavior and spawning, plant growth, fluid movement, and other tick-based mechanics. Microsoft says it commonly starts at 4 chunks and may reach 12 depending on the device.
Simulation Distance is normally no higher than Render Distance and can have a larger gameplay-processing cost. Lower it when the problem involves mob overload, farms, redstone, crop growth, or general world tick lag. Farms and redstone systems outside the active simulation range may stop behaving until a player comes close, unless ticking-area rules keep them active.

How to change Bedrock’s performance settings
Menu names and locations vary by platform, version, preview status, and world type. The usual paths are:
Before entering a local world
- Launch Minecraft Bedrock and open the world list.
- Select the world’s Edit button or pencil icon.
- Open Video settings.
- Lower Render Distance.
- If available, lower Simulation Distance in the world settings.
- Save the changes and launch the world.
While already playing
- Pause the game.
- Open Settings.
- Select Video.
- Lower Render Distance and other demanding graphics options.
- Return to the world and test the result.
If you cannot find Simulation Distance, the setting may be unavailable on your platform, located in the world-edit screen, restricted by a Realm or server, or different in your current build. Lower Render Distance first and confirm that you are playing Bedrock rather than Java Edition.
Platform-specific limits
Windows
Minecraft for Windows uses the Bedrock client and does not use the Java Launcher’s normal JVM allocation workflow. Close unnecessary applications, update Windows and your graphics driver, lower distance and effects, and test the world without add-ons or resource packs.
Android and iOS
The mobile operating system controls memory available to the app. You generally cannot reserve a fixed amount of RAM for Minecraft through an official setting. Close background apps, restart the device, lower visual settings, and avoid combining large add-ons with demanding resource packs. Mobile GPU limits and heat-related throttling can matter as much as memory capacity.

Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch
Console operating systems control memory allocation, so players cannot manually reserve more RAM for Minecraft. Reduce the available graphics and distance settings, remove demanding content, and restart the game or console. Exact controls and maximum values vary by console.
Realms and multiplayer worlds
Your client’s memory is separate from the server’s capacity. A Realm or remote server can have its own view-distance, simulation, player-count, entity, and content limits. Changing settings on your device cannot repair server-side tick lag or a remote host’s resource shortage. Microsoft’s distance and ticking-area documentation explains the distinction between what the client displays and what the server processes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does more RAM improve Bedrock FPS?
Sometimes, but usually not directly. More physical RAM can help the whole device if the operating system is running out of memory, several applications are open, or a large world and resource-pack combination causes heavy memory pressure. A self-hosted server sharing the same computer may also need more available memory.
Additional RAM is unlikely to fix GPU-limited FPS, CPU-limited simulation, overheating, network latency, remote-server tick lag, poorly optimized add-ons, excessive entities, redstone clocks, ticking areas, slow storage, or world-generation stalls.

Use the symptom to identify the likely bottleneck:
| Symptom | Likely first test |
|---|---|
| Low FPS or visual stutter | Lower Render Distance and disable visual effects. |
| Mob, farm, or redstone slowdown | Lower Simulation Distance and inspect entities or ticking areas. |
| Network delay | Compare a local world with multiplayer and check the connection or server. |
| Crashes | Disable recently added packs, update the game, and test a clean world. |
| Long loading or chunk-generation pauses | Check storage performance, world size, device temperature, and background workloads. |
If a Bedrock world keeps lagging or crashing
- Restart Minecraft and the device.
- Update Minecraft and the operating system.
- Lower Render Distance and Simulation Distance.
- Disable Vibrant Visuals, ray tracing, or other expensive effects.
- Disable recently added behavior packs, resource packs, and add-ons.
- Check available storage space and device temperature.
- Create a new, empty world and compare its performance.
- Compare a local world with multiplayer to determine whether the issue is server-related.
- Back up worlds before removing packs or reinstalling Minecraft.
If only one world has problems, the cause may be corrupted content, excessive entities, redstone activity, or ticking areas. Microsoft documents up to 10 ticking areas per world and up to 100 chunks per area; unnecessary ticking areas can keep large regions active and add processing cost. Inspect and remove them only after backing up the world.
Mojang’s crash and lag guidance also recommends restarting the device and following Bedrock’s performance troubleshooting steps.
What about a Bedrock Dedicated Server?
A Bedrock Dedicated Server is a separate server process, not the Bedrock client. It does not use the Java server’s -Xmx allocation command. Instead, give the Windows or Ubuntu Linux host enough available memory and manage the server’s workload through its configuration and world design.
The official download page currently presents different guidance: its system-requirements section lists 4 GB of RAM, while its FAQ says small servers may use at least 1 GB and that larger worlds or more players need additional memory. Treat these as different guidance levels rather than a single universal requirement.

- Simulation-related settings
- Entity-heavy farms and redstone clocks
- Add-ons, scripts, and behavior packs
- Ticking areas and exploration-generated world size
- CPU usage, disk performance, and server tick time
Microsoft’s Bedrock Dedicated Server setup guide covers installation and compatibility, while the server.properties reference explains the available server options. The official server download is available from Minecraft.net.
Increasing available server RAM will not necessarily fix server tick lag. CPU load, entities, add-ons, view distance, simulation distance, disk performance, and client/server version mismatches can all be the real cause.
