Yes. Grounded supports single-player, and its complete story can be finished without co-op partners. Reaching the story’s ending is separate from pursuing 100% completion, which is an additional post-game goal.

Can you finish Grounded’s story solo?

Yes. Obsidian’s official game page says you can face the backyard alone or online with up to three friends. In its 1.0 release notes, Obsidian announced that the complete story was available and wrote: “You can now ‘beat the game!’” That means co-op is optional for the campaign’s ending.

Xbox’s release coverage likewise describes the campaign as playable alone or with a group.

Does solo play change the difficulty?

The official sources confirm that single-player is supported, but they do not say whether solo is easier or harder overall than co-op, or establish a universal enemy-scaling rule. You will not have co-op partners alongside you during fights or exploration; how much that affects your experience depends on your play style and the situation, rather than on a documented overall difficulty comparison.

Preparing to play alone

Obsidian highlights exploration, building, survival, crafting, and upgrades as parts of the game. Its description also points to customizing bonuses with Mutations and Milk Molars, and crafting or upgrading armor and weapons. These systems give you ways to prepare, but the official description does not identify a required solo build.

Is beating the story the same as getting 100%?

No. Finishing the main story and completing every post-game objective are different targets. Obsidian’s 1.0 notes establish that the story has a beatable endpoint. The community-maintained Grounded Wiki’s Game Report Card page describes an overall completion percentage calculated after the story and says that earning a 100% card unlocks an additional achievement. Treat that checklist and achievement detail as community-maintained information, and check the current game for the requirements that apply to your version.

Should you play solo or in co-op?

What matters Solo Co-op
Supported player count One player; the official game page confirms playing alone. Online with up to three friends, according to the official game page.
Allies during fights and exploration No co-op partner is present. Friends can join you.
Scheduling You can play without coordinating with other players. Play sessions may depend on when your group is available.
Completion target You can finish the story alone; 100% is a separate goal. The story can also be experienced with a group.

The player-count and story details above are supported by official descriptions. Scheduling and the presence of allies are practical differences, not evidence that one mode is objectively easier.

Where can you play Grounded?

Xbox’s official listing lists Xbox and PC platforms and describes Game Pass access. Nintendo’s U.S. Switch listing identifies the release as digital, lists one player on a single system, and gives April 16, 2024 as its release date. Store availability, subscription terms, and purchase options vary by platform and region and can change, so check the current store for your location.

What the player milestone does—and does not—tell you

Obsidian announced on February 21, 2024 that more than 20 million players had visited the backyard. That is a historical total-player milestone, not a count of solo players or people who finished the game; the publisher has not provided a solo-completion rate or average solo completion time in the official sources cited here. See Obsidian’s announcement.
