Sometimes—but it depends on the setting. YouTube explicitly lets you enable or disable DVR after an encoder-based stream has gone live. The change affects viewers who start playing the stream afterward. YouTube’s general guidance does not confirm that every other setting can be changed during an active encoder stream, so don’t assume an edit will be available or seamless.
Which settings can you change while live?
YouTube distinguishes settings managed in Live Control Room from output settings supplied by your encoder. Its help pages explain where to edit stream details, but do not promise that every listed setting remains editable once an encoder is live.
| Setting | Where it is controlled | What YouTube documents about changing it live |
|---|---|---|
| DVR | YouTube Live Control Room | Explicitly supported after going live; viewers who start playback after the change receive the changed DVR behavior. Not supported for webcam and mobile streams. YouTube Help: DVR on live streams |
| Title, description, and other metadata | YouTube Studio / Live Control Room | YouTube describes editing settings from the stream settings page or when scheduling, but does not establish that every metadata field can be changed during an active encoder stream. YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder |
| Privacy | YouTube Live Control Room | YouTube lists public, private, and unlisted choices, but the cited guidance does not establish whether switching privacy is available or what happens if you change it while an encoder is live. YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder YouTube Help: Change video privacy settings |
| Resolution, frame rate, and bitrate | Your encoder | The encoder supplies these output settings. YouTube detects them and transcodes the stream for different playback formats; its cited guidance does not establish that changing them mid-broadcast is safe or uninterrupted. YouTube Help: Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions |
| Stream key | YouTube Live Control Room and your encoder | The key connects the encoder to YouTube. If you reset it, YouTube says to copy the new key into the encoder; it does not promise that an existing connection will continue without interruption. How to change DVR while a stream is live
YouTube explicitly documents changing DVR after going live. In Live Control Room, open the active stream’s settings and enable or disable the DVR option. The exact controls may vary with the current interface, so check the active stream’s settings rather than relying on a fixed menu label.
The change applies only to viewers who start playing the stream after you make it. People already watching are not covered by that stated effect. YouTube’s DVR guidance also notes that rewind is unavailable on very long streams once they pass the documented 12-hour threshold. See YouTube’s DVR guidance for the current details.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What to do before changing another setting
- Identify where the setting lives. Metadata and privacy are Live Control Room settings; resolution, frame rate, and bitrate are encoder output settings.
- Check the active stream’s controls. YouTube’s general setup instructions explain editing settings from the stream settings page, but do not guarantee that each one is editable once the encoder is sending video. Review YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- For an encoder change, inspect the encoder workflow first. Do not assume an output change can take effect without a reconnect or interruption; YouTube’s cited guidance does not establish midstream safety for those changes.
- Monitor stream health after a change the interface accepts. YouTube recommends testing before a broadcast and monitoring stream health while live. Checking health after an undocumented edit is a cautious practice, not a guarantee that the edit is safe. YouTube encoder settings and stream health YouTube stream key guidance.
Common problems and what to check
- The setting is missing or unavailable: It may not be editable during an active encoder stream. YouTube does not document live editing for every setting; avoid treating the DVR exception as a general rule.
- The stream disconnects after changing encoder output: The cited YouTube guidance does not promise uninterrupted midstream changes to resolution, frame rate, or bitrate. Check the encoder’s connection and Live Control Room stream health, then follow the encoder’s reconnect workflow if needed.
- The encoder no longer connects after a key reset: Copy the new stream key into the encoder, as YouTube instructs. A reset is not documented as preserving the existing connection.
- Viewers report different DVR behavior: The change affects viewers who begin playback afterward, not necessarily those already watching. Very long streams also have a documented DVR rewind limitation.
