Yes—usually for direct charging. A genuine Apple USB-C MacBook Pro power adapter can generally charge the original Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED through the console’s USB-C port when paired with a good USB-C-to-USB-C cable. For Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo’s current guidance is different: commercial adapters should provide at least 54 W, and the official Switch 2 adapter remains the lowest-risk choice.
Charging the console in handheld mode is not the same as powering a dock for TV play. Nintendo recommends its own adapter—model HAC-002 for the original Switch family—and does not guarantee that a MacBook adapter will operate an original dock reliably. Use the Apple adapter confidently for direct charging when it is genuine and undamaged; use the Nintendo adapter when dock compatibility matters.
Compatibility at a glance
| Console | Direct charging with a USB-C MacBook Pro adapter | Dock and TV guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Original Nintendo Switch | Generally suitable with a USB-PD adapter and USB-C-to-USB-C cable | Prefer Nintendo HAC-002 for the dock; third-party operation is not guaranteed |
| Nintendo Switch Lite | Generally suitable for direct charging | No TV mode or docked-TV requirement |
| Nintendo Switch OLED | Generally suitable with a USB-PD adapter and USB-C-to-USB-C cable | Prefer HAC-002 for docked TV play |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Use a compatible adapter rated at 54 W or higher under Nintendo’s published commercial-adapter guidance | Use the Switch 2 adapter with the Switch 2 dock whenever possible |
Nintendo identifies HAC-002 as compatible with the original Switch, Lite, and OLED systems and normally quotes about three hours for a full charge under its stated conditions: Nintendo charging guidance. Switch 2 requirements are separate; the 54 W statement comes from Nintendo’s Singapore support page and may not describe every regional bundle: Nintendo Switch 2 charging guidance.
What counts as a “MacBook Pro charger”?
The useful component is the USB-C power brick, not necessarily the cable that came with the MacBook.

- USB-C-to-MagSafe 3 cable: It charges a compatible MacBook, but its MagSafe connector cannot plug into a Switch. Connect a separate USB-C-to-USB-C cable to the adapter instead.
- Older MagSafe or MagSafe 2 adapter: It has no USB-C output for the console and is not a direct Switch charger.
- Third-party replacement, monitor, hub, or power bank: Suitability depends on its USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) support, output profile, cable, and power sharing.
Apple lists USB-C MacBook Pro adapters rated at 61 W, 67 W, 70 W, 87 W, 96 W, and 140 W, depending on model and configuration. Apple also explains that USB-C Macs can use USB-PD adapters with higher or lower wattage than the recommended rating: Apple’s USB-C power-adapter specifications.
Why a high-wattage adapter does not normally overcharge the Switch
The wattage printed on a charger is its maximum available output, not an amount it forces into every connected device. USB-PD equipment negotiates a compatible voltage and current with the device. A 96 W or 140 W MacBook Pro adapter therefore does not automatically send 96 W or 140 W into a Switch.
The meaningful checks are whether the adapter is genuine or safety-compliant, supports USB-PD, has an undamaged USB-C port, and is connected with a suitable cable. Higher wattage is normally not the danger; counterfeit, defective, poorly designed, damaged, or incompatible hardware is.

How to charge the Switch directly
- Check that the power brick has a USB-C output.
- Use a sound USB-C-to-USB-C charging cable. Do not use the MacBook’s MagSafe cable.
- Plug the USB-C cable into the MacBook Pro adapter.
- Insert the other end directly into the Switch’s USB-C port on the bottom of the console.
- Connect the adapter to a wall outlet.
- Look for the battery charging indicator. If the battery is completely depleted, the screen can remain blank initially.
For the original Switch, Lite, and OLED, Nintendo’s direct-charging instructions are documented here: Nintendo Switch charging instructions. Switch 2 should be assessed against its separate charging guidance rather than assumed to have identical requirements.

Original Switch and Switch OLED
The dock is an active TV-mode accessory, not merely a passive charging cradle. Nintendo specifically associates stable TV output with the supplied HAC-002 adapter. A MacBook brick may charge the console directly and still fail to provide docked video, show a warning, or behave inconsistently. Nintendo’s TV-mode troubleshooting page addresses the error that can appear when the supplied adapter is not connected: Nintendo TV-mode troubleshooting.
Switch Lite
Switch Lite does not support TV mode, so there is no dock-output question. The decision is limited to direct charging and cable safety.

Switch 2
Nintendo’s Singapore support guidance says HAC-002 can charge Switch 2 directly but cannot power Switch 2 TV mode. It also says commercially available adapters rated at 54 W or higher can be used regardless of play mode, while warning that Nintendo has not operationally checked every commercial adapter and cannot guarantee stable operation or safety for all of them: Nintendo Switch 2 adapter guidance. For the least uncertainty, use the official Switch 2 adapter with its dock.
Use the right USB-C cable
- Choose a reputable USB-C-to-USB-C cable in good condition and rated for the required charging power.
- A cable supplied with a reputable USB-C charger is a practical choice.
- Do not rely on a frayed, loose, intermittently disconnecting, or unusually hot cable.
- USB-A-to-USB-C cables connected to a low-power USB-A port are not the preferred solution for reliable charging.
- Do not confuse a USB-C connector with guaranteed USB-PD capability; cables and ports vary.
If a MacBook adapter works alone but stops charging when another device is connected, check the charger’s power-allocation table. Multi-port adapters can reduce or reassign output when ports are shared.
How much power does each model need?
| Published figure | What it refers to |
|---|---|
| Original Switch: approximately 10 W maximum charging-speed range | Nintendo’s regional technical and regulatory documentation; not a guaranteed real-time battery-charge rate |
| Switch OLED: approximately 14 W | Nintendo’s corresponding published technical figure; not a promise of charging speed during gameplay |
| Switch Lite: approximately 9 W | Nintendo’s published technical figure; Lite has no TV mode |
| Switch and OLED TV mode: 39 W | Power requirement for the docked TV setup, not the handheld battery’s normal charging requirement |
| HAC-002 output profiles: 5 V/1.5 A and 15 V/2.6 A | Nintendo’s official adapter profiles, with maximum output listed as 39 W |
These values come from Nintendo’s technical information for the original Switch family: Nintendo Switch important information (PDF). They should not be read as universal measurements of battery consumption or as a required wattage for every charging situation.

Can you play while charging?
Yes, a suitable MacBook Pro adapter can charge a Switch that is asleep or in use. During demanding gameplay, charging may be slow or the battery may still decline if console consumption approaches the negotiated output. This is most likely with low-power adapters, power banks, car chargers, or a multi-port charger whose output is being shared. “It charges” does not guarantee a rapid percentage increase during intensive play.
Safety checklist
- Use a genuine Apple adapter or a reputable, safety-certified USB-PD charger.
- Inspect the brick, cable, and Switch USB-C port for cracks, bent contacts, looseness, debris, or heat damage.
- Stop using equipment that smells of burning, buzzes, repeatedly disconnects, or becomes abnormally hot.
- Do not assume a product marketed as an “Apple charger” is genuine.
- Avoid unusual third-party docks, converters, or damaged accessories while diagnosing a problem.
- Remember that Nintendo warns unlicensed products are not subjected to Nintendo’s testing and may create compatibility problems: Nintendo charging troubleshooting and safety guidance.
What to do if the Switch will not charge
Basic checks
- Confirm the adapter is plugged into a working wall outlet.
- Verify that the brick—not merely a detachable MagSafe cable—has a USB-C output.
- Try another known-good USB-C-to-USB-C cable.
- Remove the console from the dock and connect the adapter directly to the console.
- Inspect the USB-C port for debris, bent metal, looseness, or damage.
- If available, test with the official Nintendo adapter.
- Leave a nearly empty console connected for at least 30 minutes before concluding that it is dead.
Power-reset sequence for the original Switch family
- Unplug the adapter from the wall and the console.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Hold the console’s Power button for 20 seconds, then release it.
- Connect the adapter directly to a wall outlet and then to the console.
- Press Power once.
- If the battery was fully depleted, allow at least 30 minutes of charging before trying again.
Nintendo documents this sequence and the depleted-battery behavior here: Nintendo charging-failure troubleshooting.
When to stop troubleshooting
Arrange service if the console never shows a charging icon with multiple known-good chargers and cables, the USB-C port is loose or visibly damaged, the battery swells or separates the casing, or the battery percentage fails to rise after several hours on a known-good adapter. Stop using any adapter that overheats, smells burnt, buzzes, or repeatedly cuts out.

Which charger should you use?
| Situation | Most sensible choice |
|---|---|
| You already own a genuine USB-C MacBook Pro adapter and need handheld charging | Use it with a suitable USB-C-to-USB-C cable |
| You need dependable original Switch or OLED dock operation | Nintendo HAC-002 |
| You need Switch 2 docked TV play | The official Switch 2 adapter and dock combination |
| You want one charger for a MacBook, Switch, phone, and tablet | A reputable multi-port USB-C PD charger, after checking its per-port power allocation |
| You only lack a cable | A reputable USB-C-to-USB-C charging cable; replacing the power brick is unnecessary if the Apple adapter is sound |
| You need charging away from outlets | A USB-C PD power bank or travel charger, recognizing that it is not a substitute for a dock adapter |
Buying a 140 W Apple adapter solely for an original Switch normally adds no charging benefit; that capacity is intended for the MacBook. If the Apple adapter is counterfeit, damaged, or its specifications are unknown, choose the official Nintendo adapter or a reputable replacement instead. Official vendor paths include Apple power adapters, Apple cables, and Nintendo’s store at Nintendo Store.
Final verdict
For an original Switch, Switch Lite, or Switch OLED, a genuine USB-C MacBook Pro power adapter is generally a sound direct-charging option when used with a good USB-C-to-USB-C cable. It does not automatically force the console to accept the adapter’s full wattage. Switch Lite has no TV-mode complication.
For docked TV play, keep using the Nintendo adapter supplied for the console whenever possible. Switch 2 deserves separate treatment: follow Nintendo’s 54 W commercial-adapter guidance, but choose the official Switch 2 adapter for dock use and the lowest compatibility risk.
