In ordinary vanilla Survival, no: a stick is not a normal target for an enchanting table or anvil. Java Edition has a Creative-mode exception: you can use an anvil to apply an enchanted book to a stick. Bedrock’s vanilla documentation does not list sticks as enchantable items, and its command reference does not confirm a stick workaround.
What works in each edition and game mode?
| Edition and mode | Can you enchant a stick? | What the documentation establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Java Edition, Survival | No, not through normal enchanting. | Sticks are outside the normal eligible item types for Survival enchanting. The Minecraft Wiki’s Enchanting reference distinguishes this from Creative mode. |
| Java Edition, Creative | Yes, with an anvil and enchanted book. | The Minecraft Wiki’s Enchanted Book reference gives a stick with Knockback II as an example of applying a book to an item in Creative. |
| Bedrock Edition, vanilla | A stick is not a documented eligible target. | Microsoft’s Bedrock enchantment guide lists eligible item categories, but not sticks. It does not document a stick-specific exception. |
How to enchant a stick in Java Creative
- Switch to Creative mode in Java Edition.
- Place an anvil and open its interface.
- Put a stick in the first slot and an enchanted book in the second slot.
- Take the resulting stick from the output slot if the anvil accepts the combination. Knockback II is the example given in the Minecraft Wiki’s Enchanted Book reference.
This is a Creative-mode exception, not a normal Survival recipe. The cited reference does not establish a current Java command for enchanting a stick, so this method avoids relying on version-specific command syntax.
Why the usual methods do not make a vanilla stick eligible
Enchanting methods still depend on whether the item is an eligible target. Microsoft’s Bedrock guide describes the enchanting table, librarian villagers’ enchanted books, and anvils for combining items or applying books; it does not list sticks among eligible vanilla item categories. A different method does not by itself make an ineligible stick enchantable.
- Enchanting table: A normal stick is not a documented eligible item. The table’s use of experience points and lapis lazuli does not change that.
- Anvil in Survival: Combining a stick with a book does not provide the Java Creative exception in ordinary Survival.
- Bedrock commands: Microsoft’s Bedrock /enchant command reference says the command adds an enchantment to a player’s selected item and requires cheats. It does not say that a stick is accepted, so it is not a documented workaround.
What about custom Bedrock items?
Creators can configure custom Bedrock items with the minecraft:enchantable component and an eligible slot, according to Microsoft’s enchantment guide. That applies to custom content; it does not make an unmodified vanilla stick enchantable.
