Can You Family Share DLC on Steam? What Steam Families Allows

Steam Families shares some DLC—not all. Learn how publisher settings, selected game copies, and eligibility restrictions affect access.

Yes—some DLC can be shared through Steam Families, but access depends on the publisher and whose copy of the game you launch. You get shareable DLC owned by the member whose game copy you selected; DLC is not automatically shared just because someone in your family owns the base game.

How DLC sharing works in Steam Families

Steam Support says that when you launch a game belonging to another family member, you get the DLC that member owns if the publisher has marked it as shareable. Both the selected game copy and the DLC attached to its owner matter.

Steam Families replaced the earlier Steam Family Sharing and Family View systems. For current rules, see the Steam Families User Guide & FAQ.

What determines which DLC you can use?

The publisher must allow sharing

Publishers control whether their games and DLC are shareable. Valve has also said developers may opt games out of Family Sharing for technical or other reasons. Check the specific game’s Steam listing or client before relying on access to a particular expansion or add-on. See Valve’s Steam Families announcement.

The game copy you select determines whose DLC applies

If multiple family members own the same game, Steam lets you choose which member’s copy to play and remembers that selection. DLC access follows the selected copy’s owner: another member’s shareable add-ons do not necessarily come with a different copy of the same game.

Eligibility restrictions can block access

Steam lists several exclusions that can affect sharing:

These restrictions mean that owning the base game in a family does not guarantee that every associated item will be available to other members.

Check before switching copies or relying on a save

Steam warns that a saved game may or may not work if you switch to a copy with a different set of DLC. Before continuing a save, check which member’s copy is selected and whether it includes the DLC the save depends on. If the game has multiple family-owned copies, compare their owners’ shareable DLC and confirm that the selected copy is eligible.
