The official policies reviewed do not say that switching a console’s displayed location to New Zealand automatically gets you banned. But changing an account’s country to one where you do not live, or disguising your location to get around a store restriction, can create account-policy risk. The rules and practical consequences differ across PlayStation, Steam, Xbox and Nintendo.
First, identify what “changing your region” means
A console’s location setting, an account’s country of residence, a digital store’s region, and a VPN or proxy that masks your location are different actions. A platform may allow one while restricting another, and changing a region can affect purchases or account balances even when its guidance does not describe an automatic ban.
- Device location: the country or region selected in a console’s system settings.
- Account country: the residence attached to your platform account.
- Store region: the market used to browse, buy or redeem digital content.
- Location masking: using a VPN or proxy to make a service believe you are somewhere else.
What the major platforms say
| Platform | What its guidance says | Relevant risk or limitation |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation (US terms) | Account information must be accurate and complete; the country or region selected at account creation is tied to residence and cannot later be changed. | False account information or other agreement violations can lead to restrictions, suspension or termination. The terms do not say that changing only a console location to New Zealand automatically triggers a ban. PlayStation Terms of Service (US), sections 3.1–3.2 and 12 |
| Steam | Steam Support specifically warns against using a proxy or VPN to disguise location when redeeming a region-restricted Steam Gift. | That conduct is against Steam’s terms and may result in account restrictions; the warning is specific to this circumvention, not every region setting. Steam Support, “Region Restrictions on Steam” |
| Microsoft Store and Xbox | Microsoft recommends changing region only when moving to another country or region for a long time. | Content and services may not work across regions, and Microsoft account balance does not transfer. Its support guidance does not say a temporary Xbox location change to New Zealand automatically causes a ban. Microsoft Support, “Change your country or region in Microsoft Store” |
| Nintendo | Nintendo supports changing an account’s country of residence after relocating, subject to the agreement and privacy policy for the new country. The eShop follows the account’s country setting. | An outstanding balance, active renewal or preorder can block a change; balances do not transfer, and payment cards may not work across regions. The support guidance does not say that changing country to New Zealand automatically causes a ban. Platform-by-platform guidance
PlayStation: keep account residence accurate
Sony’s US terms say: “All information provided during Account creation, and during the use of your Account, must be accurate and complete.” They also say the country or region of residence chosen when creating an account cannot later be changed. The terms reserve the right to restrict, suspend or terminate accounts that use false information or violate the agreement. That makes an account set up with an inaccurate residence a genuine terms-based risk; it is not evidence of an automatic ban for changing the console’s location setting.
PlayStation says suspensions can affect social features or the account, and serious breaches can result in a console suspension. The type and length depend on the severity of the breach and the account’s offense history. See PlayStation’s suspension guidance.

Steam: do not mask location to redeem a restricted gift
Steam Support states: “No, using a proxy or VPN to disguise your location is strictly against the Steam Terms of Service and may result in restrictions on your Steam account.” This warning concerns disguising your location to redeem a region-restricted Steam Gift. It should not be stretched into a claim that selecting New Zealand in every Steam or device setting leads to a ban.
Xbox and Microsoft Store: a long-term move is the stated reason
Microsoft says, “We recommend you change your region only if you’re moving to a new country or region for a long time.” Its guidance warns that items acquired in one region might not work in another, including Xbox subscriptions, apps, games and movies. Microsoft account balance does not transfer between regions. Those are documented practical consequences; the cited guidance does not state that a short-lived New Zealand setting automatically results in an account ban.

Nintendo: relocation is supported, but clear account blockers first
Nintendo’s instructions cover changing the account’s country when relocating. Before making the change, check for an outstanding eShop balance, an active subscription renewal or a preorder, since these may prevent the update. A balance will not carry over, and payment cards can be region-limited. Nintendo’s guidance does not describe an automatic ban for changing the country to New Zealand.
What to do before changing anything
- Identify the exact setting. Decide whether you mean the console’s location, account residence, storefront region, or a VPN/proxy. Do not assume guidance for one applies to another.
- Check the current official rules for your service and country. The PlayStation terms summarized here are the US version; platform terms and consumer protections can vary by jurisdiction.
- Use accurate residence details. If the change is to an account’s country, follow the platform’s relocation process rather than entering a country where you do not live.
- Do not disguise your location to bypass a restriction. Steam explicitly warns of possible account restrictions for VPN or proxy use to redeem a region-restricted gift.
- Check what you could lose access to. Review subscriptions, purchases, preorders, payment methods and account balance before changing country or store region.
Does this apply to changing to New Zealand for early access?
The platform guidance above does not establish a blanket rule that changing an Xbox or PC region to New Zealand for an earlier game release automatically results in a ban. It also does not promise that every such change is safe: the result depends on which setting is changed, how the account is represented, the game or store’s regional restrictions, and the applicable platform terms. A community question about getting early access is not evidence of a platform’s enforcement policy.

What is—and is not—established
There is no single cross-platform “region change” policy in the cited guidance. It establishes specific risks: PlayStation’s accuracy requirement for account information, Steam’s restriction warning for location masking to redeem certain gifts, Microsoft’s recommendation to change region for a long-term move and its cross-region content and balance caveats, and Nintendo’s relocation process and account-change blockers. These sources do not establish a universal automatic ban for a brief New Zealand switch, nor do they guarantee that every region change is risk-free.
