Can You Hide Your Name on Fortnite?

Fortnite’s Gameplay Privacy setting can hide your display name from players outside your party or squad, but it does not apply in competitive modes or change your console gamertag.

Yes. Fortnite lets you hide your display name from players outside your party or squad during regular gameplay. Open Settings > Account and Privacy > Gameplay Privacy and enable the option to hide your display name. It does not make your account universally anonymous, and Epic says the feature is unavailable in competitive modes.

How to hide your display name in Fortnite

  1. Open the Fortnite menu. On PC or Mac, press Esc; on PlayStation, press Options; on Xbox, press the Menu button; or on Switch, press +. Epic’s instructions also include Android.
  2. Select Settings, then open Account and Privacy.
  3. Scroll to Gameplay Privacy and turn on the setting to hide your display name during regular gameplay.
  4. If the game prompts you, save or apply the change.

Epic describes the masked audience as players outside your party or squad. The setting changes how your name appears to those players; it does not conceal your account identity in every context. Epic’s official localized instructions also say the feature cannot be used in competitive modes. Epic Games support

What name hiding does—and does not—cover

Regular-gameplay name masking is different from changing your Epic display name and from the separate privacy options intended for streaming. It does not, by itself, hide your online presence, disable chat, or change your account name.

Streamer privacy settings

Fortnite has separate controls under Settings > Account and Privacy > Gameplay Privacy for stream visibility. Epic documents a Hide Your Display Name From Stream Snipers toggle, an option to hide other players’ display names on stream, and Hidden Matchmaking Delay. Some experiences do not allow your name to be hidden.

  • Gift card must be redeemed at EpicGames.com/redeem. This gift card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly on a console device (PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, etc.)
  • If you play Fortnite experiences on a console device, you need to link your Epic Games account to your console account(s) so items purchased at Fortnite.com/item-shop appear across all of your linked accounts
  • Requires internet connection, valid Epic account and prior acceptance of the terms
  • Redemption: Online

Hidden Matchmaking Delay hides matchmaking status updates, but it is not a guarantee that viewers cannot infer which match you are in or identify you in other ways. Epic warns that enabling the delay can make queues longer. Epic Games support

Epic display name versus PlayStation or Xbox gamertag

On PlayStation and Xbox, Fortnite may show the name attached to your console account rather than your Epic display name. Changing your Epic display name will not change your PlayStation or Xbox name. Epic says an Epic display-name change requires a verified email address and can be made once every two weeks. That is an account-name change, not the in-game masking toggle. Epic Games support

Other privacy controls to check

Fortnite keeps presence, social, gameplay, and communication options separate. Epic’s privacy help includes profile presence choices such as Online or Away, as well as separate Social Privacy and Gameplay Privacy sections. Chat settings and reporting are under Communication. Choose the control that matches what you want to limit; hiding your display name does not change those other settings. Epic Games support
