In GTA 5 story mode, drive a stolen car into an available space in the garage of the protagonist you’re playing, then save your game. Garages have limited capacity, and ordinary stored cars do not necessarily return if they are abandoned, impounded or destroyed.
How to store a stolen car
- Choose the protagonist whose garage you want to use.
- Drive the stolen car into an open space in that character’s home garage or purchased garage.
- Save the story after parking the car.
The GTA Wiki’s story-mode vehicle-storage guide says stolen vehicles, including some unique vehicles obtained during missions, can be stored in protagonist garages. Storage is limited, so check for an open space before leaving a car there.
How much garage space each protagonist has
The GTA Wiki lists two additional vehicle spaces in each protagonist’s home garage and four in that character’s separately purchased garage. The purchased garages are Grove Street Garage for Franklin, Pillbox Hill Garage for Trevor and Vinewood Garage for Michael.

These capacities are described by the community-maintained GTA Wiki vehicle-storage page, accessed in 2026; they are not an unlimited personal-vehicle system.

Stolen cars are not the same as signature vehicles
Franklin’s Buffalo S, Michael’s Tailgater and Trevor’s Bodhi are their primary vehicles. The GTA Wiki’s personal-vehicle guide says these return to their character’s residence if abandoned. Do not assume a regular stolen car has that same persistence behavior just because you drove it before.
What to do if a stored car goes missing
An eligible additional stored vehicle may appear at the Mission Row Police Station impound lot if it was left behind for a while, or if the character was wasted or busted nearby. The GTA Wiki impound guide describes a $250 fee to retrieve a car there. This is not a guarantee: if the vehicle is not in the impound, it may be lost.

- Check the Mission Row impound lot.
- Check relevant mission or safehouse locations if the car disappeared during or after a mission.
- Do not count on recovery if the car is absent from those places.
A September 24, 2013 report by PlayStation LifeStyle reproduced a warning from Rockstar Support about reports of car and garage problems, particularly after upgrading a car and completing a mission. Rockstar said at the time it had no workaround for recovering a missing car. That is historical guidance, not evidence that the issue is currently common or affects every platform.

Do not apply GTA Online garage replacement rules to story mode. Rockstar’s support article about replacing vehicles in a full GTA Online garage says confirming a replacement permanently removes the selected vehicle. It addresses Online inventory, not whether a stolen story-mode car will persist.
