Yes, a YouTube channel with no uploaded videos is not listed as ineligible for live streaming. YouTube’s published general requirements call for a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and its general start page says creators must be at least 16. YouTube does not explicitly promise that every channel with zero uploads will be enabled, so check the channel’s feature eligibility in YouTube Studio.
Does a channel need uploaded videos to go live?
YouTube’s published live-streaming requirements do not state a minimum number of uploaded videos. A channel with no uploads is therefore not identified as disqualified by the requirements reviewed, but YouTube does not specifically address or guarantee eligibility for every zero-upload channel. The practical test is whether Live streaming is available for your channel in YouTube Studio.
For general live streaming, YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s general start page also states that creators must be at least 16. See YouTube live streaming tips and Get started with live streaming.
Check live-streaming eligibility in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio. Sign in to the account that owns the channel.
- Go to Settings → Channel → Feature eligibility. YouTube’s phone-verification instructions identify this path for checking features and completing verification.
- Complete phone verification if prompted. YouTube says phone verification provides access to features including live streaming, though restrictions can still affect availability. Details: See & unlock features with phone verification.
- Check whether live streaming has been enabled. After turning it on, the first stream may take up to 24 hours to become available.
- Check for restrictions from the past 90 days. Policy or copyright issues can disable live streaming; YouTube explains restrictions at Avoid restrictions on YouTube live streaming.
Requirements depend on how you stream
| Method | Requirements stated by YouTube | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Webcam or encoder from a computer | Verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; general age requirement of at least 16. | The general help page lists webcam and encoder methods but does not state a subscriber minimum for them. That omission should not be read as a guarantee that no additional method-specific eligibility condition can apply. |
| YouTube mobile app | At least 50 subscribers, a verified channel, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and a compatible device: Android 8.0+ or iOS 8+. | The first mobile stream may take up to 24 hours to become available after live streaming is turned on. See Create a live stream on mobile. |
Mobile streaming: subscriber limits are not the same as permission
YouTube distinguishes the ability to start a mobile stream from how it handles mobile audiences and archives for smaller channels. Creators with more than 50 but fewer than 1,000 subscribers may have mobile live viewers limited and archived streams set to private by default. YouTube says the audience limitation may take several weeks to update after reaching 1,000 subscribers; mobile streaming access is not lost unless the channel falls below 50 subscribers. These qualifications apply to the mobile guidance, not as a general uploaded-video requirement.

If Go Live is unavailable
- Verification is incomplete: follow the phone-verification prompt in Studio under Settings → Channel → Feature eligibility.
- Activation is still processing: allow up to 24 hours after turning on live streaming before trying the first stream.
- The channel has a live-streaming restriction: review YouTube’s restriction guidance and resolve the underlying issue. You cannot evade a restriction by streaming from another channel.
- You are trying to stream from mobile: check the 50-subscriber minimum and the supported-device requirements; computer webcam and encoder methods have different stated eligibility details.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream made from uploaded videos, rather than starting a live camera broadcast, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera. Nothing has to stay on at home, it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
