Yes. Call of Duty: Mobile works directly with a Backbone controller on a compatible iPhone or Android phone; you do not need a console or PC. Console Call of Duty games need to be streamed through Xbox Cloud Gaming or Remote Play, PlayStation Remote Play, or a supported PC-streaming setup. Warzone Mobile is no longer playable: Activision shut down its servers on April 17, 2026.
Which Call of Duty games work with Backbone?
Backbone is a controller, not a console or a way to install console games on a phone. Whether a particular Call of Duty game works depends on where it runs and whether that game or streaming service accepts controller input. Backbone lists Call of Duty: Mobile as controller-compatible on its games FAQ.

Call of Duty: Mobile
This is the simplest route: install the game on a compatible phone, connect the Backbone, and play. It is a mobile game in its own right, not the console edition running locally. It does not require an Xbox, PlayStation, PC, Game Pass Ultimate, or Backbone+.

Warzone Mobile
Do not choose a Backbone expecting to play Warzone Mobile. Activision removed it from the App Store and Google Play in May 2025, then took its servers offline on April 17, 2026. Existing installations no longer provide playable access. Activision points mobile players to Call of Duty: Mobile instead; see its service notice.
Console and PC games
For a console Call of Duty title, the phone displays a stream from a cloud service or your own console. For a PC game, a supported PC-streaming setup can serve the same role. Backbone supplies the physical controls; it does not supply the game, a license, a console, or the computing power to run a console or PC release on the phone.
How to set up Call of Duty: Mobile
- Check that your Backbone model fits your phone and its connector and operating system.
- Connect the phone securely to the controller. A case that prevents a firm connection can interfere.
- Install Call of Duty: Mobile from the appropriate app store.
- With the Backbone connected, open the game from the phone or Backbone app.
- Complete the tutorial if prompted. Some games require this before controller input is available.
- If the controls do not respond, look in the game’s input or controller settings and enable or select controller input if that option is available. Menu names and locations can change between game updates.
- Start a mode available in your current game version.
Backbone’s controller setup guidance likewise advises launching a compatible game, completing any required tutorial, and checking the game’s own settings. Controller matchmaking and gameplay may differ from touchscreen play; do not assume identical matchmaking, aim assist, or competitive conditions.

Playing console Call of Duty on a phone
Xbox Cloud Gaming: no Xbox console
Xbox Cloud Gaming is the option for supported Call of Duty titles when you do not own an Xbox. Activision’s Xbox Cloud Gaming guide lists Black Ops 6, Modern Warfare III, Warzone, and Modern Warfare II among supported titles. This is not a guarantee that every release will remain in the cloud catalog: check the current catalog before subscribing or setting up.
Activision’s guidance requires an active Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription, an Xbox account linked to an Activision account, and a supported controller; it says touch controls are not supported for these Call of Duty cloud sessions. You also need a compatible phone and a stable internet connection.
- Sign in to or create an Activision account and an Xbox account.
- Link the Xbox account to the Activision account.
- Maintain Game Pass Ultimate while using this cloud-gaming route.
- Connect the Backbone, then open Xbox Cloud Gaming through the Xbox service or Backbone app.
- Choose a Call of Duty title currently offered in the cloud catalog and start the stream. Sign in if prompted, using the linked Activision account if you want supported progression associated with that account.
Activision says online multiplayer progression for the titles covered by its guidance is stored on the Activision account and can carry across linked platforms. Purchases and Call of Duty Points are not as simple: some content is shared, while some currency or real-money purchases remain tied to the platform where they were acquired. Check the game’s current account and purchase rules rather than assuming everything transfers.

Xbox Remote Play: stream from your Xbox
Remote Play sends a stream from your own Xbox to the phone, so you need an Xbox with the relevant game installed or otherwise available, plus remote access configured. Unlike Cloud Gaming, this route uses your console and its library; performance depends on the console’s connection and the phone’s connection. Backbone distinguishes the console-required Remote Play route from Xbox Cloud Gaming in its console FAQ.

You need a PS4 or PS5 with the game available, and PlayStation Remote Play installed and configured. Backbone says iPhone users can use any Backbone Edition for PS Remote Play; Android users need the Backbone One PlayStation Edition for this official route. That model distinction concerns Remote Play compatibility, not a special Call of Duty: Mobile advantage. Details are in Backbone’s console-requirements FAQ.
PC streaming
Steam Link or another supported PC-streaming method may let you control a PC copy of Call of Duty from your phone. This is streaming, not a native phone installation, and requires a PC running the game and a compatible streaming setup. The available sources do not establish a single setup that works for every PC Call of Duty title, so check compatibility for the particular game and streaming app.

Do you need Backbone+ or Game Pass?
They are different subscriptions for different purposes. You do not need Backbone+ simply to use the controller with Call of Duty: Mobile; Backbone says a non-subscriber can launch a mobile game directly from the phone’s home screen. Backbone says Backbone+ is required to launch Xbox Cloud Gaming from inside the Backbone app. That app-launch requirement does not establish that Backbone+ is required when accessing the Xbox service another way, so check the service’s current terms for your preferred route.
For the Xbox Cloud Gaming Call of Duty route described by Activision, Game Pass Ultimate is required. It is not needed for native Call of Duty: Mobile. Neither subscription is included just by buying a Backbone.

For Call of Duty: Mobile or streamed games, choose based on phone fit, connector, comfort, controls, and budget—not an assumption that one model unlocks Call of Duty. Backbone’s platform page displayed Backbone One at $99.99 and Backbone Pro at $169.99 when it was crawled; prices, offers, and regional availability can change, so check the current Backbone page before buying. The cited information does not show that the Pro is required for Call of Duty compatibility.

- Backbone Pro: A higher-priced option for buyers who value its additional hardware features and broader device or screen flexibility. The cited information gives no reason to buy it solely to make Call of Duty work.
For COD: Mobile alone, the controller is the main purchase decision; for console play, also account for the game and the relevant cloud subscription or console. Buying a Backbone does not include a Call of Duty game or license.
Troubleshoot controller input and streaming problems
The game opens, but the buttons do nothing
- Close Call of Duty completely.
- Connect or reseat the Backbone, checking that the phone is firmly attached and its case is not obstructing the connector.
- Reopen the game after connecting the controller.
- Finish or revisit the tutorial, then inspect the game’s controller or input settings.
- Update the game, phone operating system, and Backbone app or firmware where applicable.
- Try another controller-compatible game. If it also fails to recognize the controller, contact Backbone support; if it works, focus on Call of Duty’s settings or current game version.
Cloud or Remote Play lags or disconnects
Cloud gaming and Remote Play stream video and input over a network. Weak or unstable connections can cause delay, image-quality drops, or disconnects; those symptoms do not necessarily mean the Backbone is faulty. Native Call of Duty: Mobile runs on the phone rather than streaming from a console, though it still requires an online connection.
The title or account will not start in Xbox Cloud Gaming
Confirm that the game is currently in the cloud catalog, Game Pass Ultimate is active, the Xbox and Activision accounts are linked, and a supported controller is connected. If progression or purchases are the issue, check which account and platform hold that specific item; cross-platform treatment is not universal.
Can you play Call of Duty offline on Backbone?
Do not buy Backbone expecting offline Call of Duty play. Call of Duty: Mobile is an online service, and cloud gaming and Remote Play require a network connection. The cited sources do not establish a complete offline mode for the Call of Duty options discussed here.
