Tech Times reported that Cemu 1.1.2b could show racing scenes with tracks and racers, while also noting missing effects and the need for a powerful PC. The report did not establish that the game worked reliably from start to finish.
What “play Mario Kart 8 on PC” meant in 2015
The headline referred to a Tech Times report published December 16, 2015. The build it highlighted was Cemu 1.1.2b, an early version of a Wii U emulator. Cemu runs Wii U software by recreating parts of the console’s hardware and operating environment; it does not convert the game into a native Windows release.

That distinction matters. A playable demonstration means the emulator can render enough of the game to show meaningful gameplay. It does not prove that every mode, effect, input method, or progression system works reliably. The report described a substantial step forward from an earlier build, but did not establish a complete PC equivalent to the Wii U game.
What the 2015 footage reportedly showed
Tech Times described visible tracks and racers, a skybox with clouds, fireworks, a reasonably clear image, and improved lighting compared with an older Cemu build. The article said the earlier build could start the game at a decent frame rate but was not yet considered playable; the newer demonstration looked more complete, although some visual effects remained absent.
#1 Best Overall
- Hit the road with the definitive version of Mario Kart 8 and play anytime, anywhere! Race your friends or battle them in a revised battle mode on new and returning battle courses
- Play locally in up to 4-player multiplayer in 1080p while playing in TV Mode. Every track from the Wii U version, including DLC, makes a glorious return
- Plus, the Inklings appear as all-new guest characters, along with returning favorites, such as King Boo, Dry Bones, and Bowser Jr.
- Players can choose a new Smart Steering feature which makes driving and staying on the track easy for novice players and kids even at 200cc
This was a comparison between emulator builds, not a controlled comparison with the Wii U version. The report supplied no verified frame rate, resolution, PC specifications, graphics settings, or reproducible test conditions. It also did not establish that all scenes shown represented complete races or that the experience was stable over extended play.
What the demonstration did not prove
The contemporary report called Cemu a work in progress and warned that smooth performance required a powerful PC. That is a qualitative description, not a usable hardware recommendation. It did not identify the demonstration machine’s processor, graphics card, memory, operating system, or input device.
Nor did it verify complete Grand Prix progression, all cups or unlockables, reliable audio, GamePad behavior, split-screen multiplayer, online play, save compatibility, downloadable content, consistent performance, or freedom from crashes and graphical defects. Historical summaries also describe early Cemu builds as having stutters, video glitches, missing audio, and incomplete GamePad support (HandWiki’s Cemu history).
Why the milestone mattered
Cemu’s public release was in October 2015, roughly two months before the Tech Times story, according to HandWiki’s history of the emulator. The reported change—from an earlier build that could start the game but was not considered playable to footage showing recognizable racing scenes—was notable progress for a young emulator. It was still progress toward compatibility, not evidence of a polished replacement for a Wii U.

How Cemu has changed since then
Cemu is now an open-source Wii U emulator. Its official repository says it can run most Wii U games and homebrew in a playable state and lists 64-bit Windows, Linux, and macOS support, with macOS described as experimental. The releases page lists Cemu 2.6, dated February 6, 2025; that listing alone does not establish whether a newer release exists today.
The Cemu compatibility wiki has a dedicated Mario Kart 8 page. It notes Wii U account files as a requirement for online functionality through Cemu. That is a Cemu configuration prerequisite, not confirmation that Nintendo’s original online services or every online feature is currently available.

For a modern setup, use the project’s current documentation rather than instructions or menus from Cemu 1.1.2b. Keep the emulator and game software separate: obtain Cemu from the official project, and use game, system, and account data obtained through lawful means applicable in your jurisdiction. This article does not provide sources for copyrighted game files or system data.
- Get Cemu: Download it from the official GitHub releases page.
- Use legitimate game and system data: Consult the project’s setup resources for current requirements. The 2015 report is not a guide to obtaining or preparing game files.
- Set up a controller: Configure and test your controller before launching a race. The old report does not document a current input setup, and labels from its 2015 build may no longer apply.
- Check game-specific guidance: Consult the compatibility page for title-specific notes. Performance and graphics can vary with Cemu version, graphics API, driver, operating system, and hardware.
- Troubleshoot using project resources: If the game fails to boot, check the validity of your game dump and required system files. For rendering or stability problems, look at the issue tracker’s status and priority view and subject-sorted issue list before trying third-party patches. If an update causes trouble, check release notes and consider a project-documented stable or recommended build.
Cemu or original Wii U?
| Consideration | Cemu on PC | Original Wii U |
|---|---|---|
| What runs | Wii U software through an emulator; behavior depends on emulator compatibility and the PC setup. | The game runs on its intended console hardware. |
| Image and display options | Can offer resolution and display flexibility; graphics enhancements may introduce glitches or depart from the original presentation. | Provides the console’s intended output without emulator graphics settings. |
| Setup | Requires emulator configuration and legally sourced game data; drivers, shaders, and game-specific issues can affect results. | Uses the console and a game copy, avoiding emulator configuration. |
| GamePad experience | Does not reproduce the original controller experience automatically; setup and feature behavior depend on the configuration. | Provides the intended Wii U GamePad experience. |
| Multiplayer and accessories | Behavior can depend on compatibility and input configuration. | Uses the console’s original local-play and accessory setup. |
| Online play | The Cemu wiki notes Wii U account files as a prerequisite; this does not establish current Nintendo service availability. | Service availability and requirements depend on Nintendo’s original services. |
How to read the old headline
“You can now play” was directionally true if read as “Cemu had reached a playable-looking demonstration.” It overstated the evidence if read as a claim of a complete PC release. The December 2015 story documented an early emulation milestone: recognizable racing scenes in a rapidly developing Wii U emulator, with missing effects and important questions about reliability and compatibility still unanswered.
