No—not natively or officially. The PlayStation 5 runs Minecraft: Bedrock Edition, not Minecraft: Java Edition. You can play Minecraft on PS5, but you cannot install Java, use Java mod loaders such as Forge or Fabric, or join ordinary Java servers from the console version.
PS5 Bedrock does support cross-play with supported Bedrock players on Xbox, Nintendo Switch, mobile devices, and Windows. It does not provide standard official Java–Bedrock cross-play.

Which Minecraft edition is on PS5?
The native PS5 release is Bedrock Edition. Mojang lists Java Edition for Windows, Mac, and Linux, while Bedrock is the edition used on consoles, mobile devices, and Windows. The native PS5 version launched on October 22, 2024.
“Minecraft for PS5” describes the console build and its hardware improvements; it does not mean that Java Edition has been released for PlayStation. Mojang’s PS5 announcement highlighted 4K resolution, 60 frames per second, and increased render distance as stated improvements for the native version, although actual performance can depend on the game’s current settings and updates.

Both editions are Minecraft, but they use different clients and multiplayer systems. Mojang states that Java and Bedrock players cannot play together through ordinary official cross-play.
Can a PS5 player play with friends on Java Edition?
Not through normal official cross-play. First check which PC edition your friends use:
- PC Bedrock: A PS5 player can generally play with them through compatible multiplayer features, accounts, and servers.
- PC Java: A standard PS5 Bedrock client cannot join them as a Java player.
Some independently operated servers may offer a Bedrock compatibility route using third-party server-side systems. That is a server-specific exception, can have restrictions, and does not install Java Edition on your PS5. Entering a Java server address also cannot convert the Bedrock client into a Java client.

Can you use Java mods on PS5?
No. PS5 cannot normally install Java mod loaders such as Forge or Fabric, downloadable .jar mods, Java modpacks, or PC launchers. The console uses Bedrock’s supported distribution model instead.
Bedrock does have add-ons, Marketplace worlds, skins, and texture packs. However, a Bedrock add-on is not automatically equivalent to a Java mod. Java mods can change mechanics, rendering, world generation, automation, or the client and server in ways that may have no direct PS5 equivalent. Some gameplay ideas are available through Bedrock add-ons, but the installation method, APIs, compatibility, and feature set are different.
Does buying Java & Bedrock for PC give you Minecraft on PS5?
No—not as a transferred PlayStation license. The Java & Bedrock package is a PC product accessed through the PC launcher. PlayStation uses its own PlayStation Store license and PlayStation Network account.
You can link a Microsoft account to your PlayStation account for supported services such as cross-platform social features, Realms, and Marketplace access. That account link does not grant the PS5 version automatically, turn the PS5 client into Java, or remove the separate platform-store licensing boundary.
If Java is the reason you want Minecraft, buy or use the PC edition on a supported Windows, Mac, or Linux computer. If you only want Minecraft on PS5, you need the PlayStation version.

PlayStation Remote Play streams a game running on your PS5 to another supported device. It does not turn the PS5 into a PC or stream a PC Java installation through the PlayStation Minecraft client.
Separate PC-streaming or remote-desktop arrangements could display Java running on another computer, but Java would still be executing on that computer. Input, latency, resolution, networking, software, and hardware requirements vary, and this is not an official native Java solution for PS5.
PlayStation cloud streaming likewise covers eligible PlayStation games; it does not provide a general PC operating environment or Minecraft Java launcher on PS5. PlayStation Portal is not a Java workaround either. See PlayStation’s information on Minecraft and Remote Play and PS5 cloud streaming.
Claims about jailbreaking the console, sideloading a Java runtime, installing PC launchers, or manipulating old game files are not supported consumer solutions. They can create security, update, compatibility, account, and legal risks.

What should you buy?
Choose Minecraft for PS5 if you want:
- Minecraft on a television with controller support.
- Local split-screen multiplayer.
- Cross-play with Xbox, Switch, mobile, or PC Bedrock players.
- Bedrock Marketplace maps, skins, add-ons, and texture packs.
- The simplest setup and native PS5 performance.
Choose Java on PC if you specifically need:
- Forge, Fabric, large Java modpacks, or other PC mod-loader ecosystems.
- Java-native servers and Java multiplayer with Windows, Mac, or Linux players.
- Java-specific technical mechanics, tools, and configuration options.
Choose both if:
Your household needs PS5 Bedrock and PC Java access, or different players use different editions. Understand that the PC and PlayStation purchases are separate platform licenses.
PS5 purchase and multiplayer requirements
The U.S. PlayStation Store listing checked in August 2026 showed the PS5 Standard Edition at $19.99, with a free trial listed. It also showed Deluxe and Ultimate collections at $29.99 and $39.99. Prices, promotions, and bundle contents can change; these editions add digital content and tokens, not Java Edition.
The U.S. listing also currently states that PlayStation Plus is required for online play. The exact requirement can vary by activity and policy, so check the current PlayStation Store or support wording before subscribing. PlayStation Plus does not provide Java Edition.
To link your Microsoft account on PS5:
- Launch Minecraft on PlayStation.
- Select Sign in with a Microsoft account on the title screen.
- Scan the displayed QR code or visit the linking page shown by the game.
- Enter the on-screen code.
- Sign in to the Microsoft account you want associated with PlayStation.
Mojang notes that changing the Microsoft account linked to a PlayStation Network account may be restricted, so choose the account carefully.

Bottom line
You can play Minecraft on PS5, but the PS5 version is Bedrock—not Java. It supports Bedrock cross-play, split-screen, controller play, Marketplace content, and Bedrock add-ons. If you need Java mods, Java servers, or Java-specific PC features, you need Minecraft Java Edition on a supported PC.
