Usually, no: connecting a PS5 to a laptop with an HDMI cable will not put the game on the laptop screen. Most laptop HDMI ports send video out; they do not accept video in. To play on the laptop, use PS Remote Play, a USB capture card, or a laptop whose specifications explicitly confirm HDMI input.
Why a direct HDMI cable usually does not work
HDMI is not automatically a two-way connection. A laptop’s HDMI output sends the laptop’s picture to a TV or monitor. A PS5 also sends video out, so connecting the two outputs does not give the laptop a way to receive or display the console’s signal.
Only a laptop with a genuine HDMI-in port can accept the PS5’s signal directly. That feature is uncommon. Check the exact laptop model’s official specifications or manual for “HDMI input,” “video input,” or an equivalent feature. The port’s shape, an HDMI label, or successful connection from the laptop to a TV does not prove it can receive video. USB-C, Thunderbolt, or USB4 also does not normally accept PS5 video on its own; those capabilities do not replace a capture device.
Sony describes HDMI input as a feature on compatible computers for displaying audio and video from an external device; it is not a standard feature on most laptops. See Sony’s HDMI-input guidance.

Choose the right way to play

Option 1: Play with PS Remote Play
Remote Play does not route video through the laptop’s HDMI port. The PS5 runs the game and streams its picture over a network to the laptop; controller input travels back to the console. It is the easiest no-capture-card option, but it is not equivalent to a direct HDMI display: network conditions affect responsiveness and image quality.
Sony lists support for Windows 10 64-bit and Windows 11, and for macOS Big Sur through macOS Tahoe on its current requirements page. The listed Windows/Mac application requirements include a 7th-generation Intel Core processor or later, at least 2 GB RAM, 100 MB of storage, a 1024 × 768 display or higher, a sound card, and a USB port. These are published application requirements, not a promise of smooth performance in every game or network. See Sony’s current Remote Play requirements and setup.
Enable Remote Play on PS5
- On the PS5, open Settings → System → Remote Play.
- Turn on Enable Remote Play.
- To wake the console from Rest Mode, open Settings → System → Power Saving → Features Available in Rest Mode and enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
Connect from the laptop
- Install the official PS Remote Play application for Windows or macOS.
- Sign in with the PlayStation account associated with the PS5 and launch the app.
- Select PS5 and follow the prompts. Connect a compatible controller to the laptop using USB or supported wireless pairing.
- If automatic discovery fails, on the PS5 go to Settings → System → Remote Play → Pair Device, note the displayed number, and enter it in the app. Sony recommends that the console and computer be on the same network during manual registration.
For better consistency, connect the PS5 to the router with Ethernet if possible; a wired laptop connection can help too. If using Wi-Fi, 5 GHz is generally preferable to congested 2.4 GHz. Close downloads, cloud backups, and other heavy network traffic. Stability matters more than a headline internet speed, and playing away from home adds the connection between locations to the equation.

If Remote Play stutters or feels delayed, first test on the same local network, reduce other traffic, and lower the app’s video-quality or frame-rate settings if available. Then restart the app, laptop, PS5, and router; confirm Remote Play is enabled on the correct console and account; and try manual pairing again. No fixed resolution or delay can be promised across different networks.
Option 2: Use a USB capture card for an HDMI connection
A capture card takes the PS5’s HDMI output and makes it available to laptop software over USB. The usual signal path is:

PS5 HDMI OUT → capture card HDMI IN
Capture card HDMI OUT → TV or monitor (optional passthrough)
Capture card USB → laptopCapture and passthrough are different. Capture is the video delivered to the laptop application; passthrough is the HDMI picture sent to another display. The laptop preview has capture and software processing in its path, so it can feel delayed. Use passthrough to a TV or monitor when response time matters.

What you need
- A USB capture card with HDMI input that supports the PS5’s output mode.
- A compatible laptop USB port; check the card’s bandwidth and power requirements.
- One HDMI cable, or two if using HDMI passthrough.
- The card maker’s software or a capture application such as OBS Studio.
- A controller connected to the PS5 or laptop, depending on how you play.
For example, Elgato’s Game Capture Neo PS5 setup specifies a USB 3.0 computer connection and uses HDMI input, HDMI output, and USB; passthrough uses two HDMI cables. A higher-spec device may have different requirements: Elgato recommends USB 3.2 Gen 2 for its 4K X PS5 setup, noting that USB 3.2 Gen 1 may mean reduced capture resolution.
Connect and configure it
- Connect the PS5 directly to a TV or monitor temporarily.
- On the PS5, open Settings → System → HDMI and turn Enable HDCP off.
- Disconnect the PS5 from the display. Connect PS5 HDMI OUT to the card’s HDMI IN, then connect the card to the laptop by USB.
- If using passthrough, connect the card’s HDMI OUT to the TV or monitor.
- Open the capture software or OBS Studio and add the card as a video-capture source. Select its audio source if sound does not appear automatically.
HDCP is copy protection for protected video. Elgato says HDCP must be disabled for its supported PS5 gameplay-capture workflow; protected video content cannot be captured while protection is enabled. Disabling it for gameplay capture can affect protected video applications. Do not try to defeat HDCP with a splitter: follow the console and capture-device makers’ documented settings. Latency, 4K, 120 Hz, HDR, and VRR
For the least complicated, most responsive display path, connect the PS5 directly to a TV or gaming monitor. Remote Play adds network streaming and decoding. A capture-card preview adds capture and software processing. Neither has a universal latency figure: the result depends on the network or the full capture setup. A capture card’s HDMI passthrough may be more suitable for responsive play than its laptop preview, but verify the particular card’s specifications.
Do not assume that a capture card showing “4K” supports every 4K/120 Hz, HDR, or VRR combination. Check separately:
- Supported HDMI input modes.
- Capture resolution and frame rate delivered to the laptop.
- Passthrough resolution and frame rate delivered to another display.
- HDR and VRR support, including whether they work at the same time as the desired refresh rate.
- Required USB bandwidth, laptop hardware, software, and cable capability.
- The laptop screen’s own resolution and refresh rate.
A card can pass a high-refresh signal to a monitor while capturing at a lower resolution or frame rate. Read the exact model’s input, capture, and passthrough specifications rather than relying on a single maximum-resolution claim.

Troubleshooting
The PS5 screen stays blank after connecting directly
The laptop port is most likely output-only. Confirm the exact model’s specifications for HDMI input. If the manufacturer does not document it, use Remote Play or a capture card instead. Testing the laptop as an output to a TV only confirms it can send video out.
The capture software shows a black screen
- Connect the PS5 to a TV or monitor and confirm Settings → System → HDMI → Enable HDCP is off.
- Check that the PS5 is connected to the card’s HDMI IN, not HDMI OUT.
- Check USB connection, card power, and the selected video-capture source.
- Try a known-good HDMI cable and update the card’s software or firmware if the maker provides an update.
- Test at 1080p before trying 4K, HDR, VRR, or high-refresh modes, which may exceed the card’s supported input.

The picture works, but there is no sound
Check that the capture card is selected as the audio source, audio monitoring is enabled in the capture software, and the app and operating system are not muted. Also check whether the PS5 is routing sound to a headset instead of HDMI. Game audio and party-chat audio or microphone routing may need separate configuration. Elgato documents an optional Chat Link Pro setup for certain controller/headset capture workflows.

Test locally first, connect the PS5 by Ethernet if possible, reduce competing network use, and lower streaming settings if available. If it still fails, restart the devices and router, verify the console’s Remote Play and Rest Mode settings, then try manual pairing. Playing over the internet from another location depends on both ends of the connection.
The controller is not detected
Connect a compatible controller to the laptop by USB or use a supported wireless pairing method, then follow the Remote Play app’s instructions. If the controller is paired to a different device, reconnect it to the laptop or directly to the PS5 as appropriate for the method you chose.

- Cheapest and simplest: Try PS Remote Play first if you have a reliable network and do not require a physical HDMI connection.
- HDMI video inside a laptop app: Use a USB capture card. Choose based on the capture and passthrough modes you actually need, plus laptop USB compatibility.
- Recording or streaming: A capture card provides the PS5 feed to software such as OBS; check audio and party-chat needs as well as video specifications.
- Competitive play or minimum delay: Prefer a TV or gaming monitor connected directly to the PS5. If using a capture card, play through supported HDMI passthrough rather than relying on the laptop preview.
- Direct cable to laptop: Do it only if the exact laptop model explicitly supports HDMI input.
