Sometimes—but a Rust developer game ban, a VAC ban and a ban from one server have different effects. Check the exact restriction shown on your Steam account or in Rust: a developer game ban may block online play, a VAC ban blocks VAC-secured servers, and a server ban may apply only to that server. Steam’s general policy allows unsecured-server play after a VAC ban only when the game offers that option; an older Rust developer post described insecure servers, but it does not confirm today’s Rust server access.
First, identify which ban you have
“Game banned” can refer to different restrictions. The label and the error message matter: they tell you who imposed the restriction and where to ask about it.

|---|---|---|---|
| Developer game ban | The game developer requests it; Steam applies it to the account. | Specific to the game that uses the feature. It may prevent online play and/or trading that game’s items. | The developer sets the duration. Contact the developer to appeal. Steam’s game-ban policy. |
| VAC ban | Valve Anti-Cheat (VAC). | Prevents joining VAC-secured servers for the affected game. Unsecured servers are a possibility only if the game offers them. | Steam says VAC bans are permanent and cannot be appealed through Steam Support; an incorrectly issued ban is removed automatically after review. Steam’s VAC policy. |
| Server ban | A server administrator or the administrators of a shared community ban list. | Limited to the server or ban system that imposed it; it is not automatically a Steam VAC ban or a global Rust ban. | Contact the relevant server owner or administrator. Steam distinguishes server bans from VAC bans. |
Can you still play Rust online?
If it is a Rust developer game ban
Do not assume that every game ban has the same effect. Steam says a developer game ban applies to the specific game and may block online play, but the developer determines the ban’s duration and effects. A game ban cannot stop you from using Steam or launching the game offline; that does not mean Rust’s online servers will accept the account.
If it is a VAC ban
Steam’s general rule is that a VAC-banned account cannot join VAC-secured servers for the affected game. It may be able to join unsecured servers only if that game provides them. Facepunch’s older Devblog 49 said: “Users that are VAC banned or running without EAC see only insecure servers.” That is historical Rust-specific guidance, not confirmation of Rust’s current server configuration. Check the current restriction and the error for the server you are trying to join rather than treating access to any Rust server as guaranteed.

If it is a server ban
A ban from one server does not, by itself, establish that you are barred from every Rust server. The administrator controls the server-level restriction, and community servers may use shared ban lists. Ask the relevant administrator which restriction applies and whether it can be reviewed.
Are Rust game bans always permanent?
No. Steam says game-ban duration is set by the developer, and only permanent game bans appear on a Steam profile; temporary suspensions do not. Facepunch’s QoL Update documented temporary game bans of up to one year for players who repeatedly played alongside cheaters. That is a specific documented use case, not a promise about the length or status of any individual ban.

Who should you contact to appeal?
- Read the exact label and error. Check the Steam account’s ban information and the message shown when you try to join Rust or a particular server.
- For a developer game ban, contact Facepunch. Steam directs game-ban appeals to the game’s developer. Valve applies the developer’s decision and does not decide the game-ban appeal.
- For a VAC ban, use Steam’s policy as your guide. Steam Support does not manually remove or appeal VAC bans. Steam says bans found to be incorrect are removed automatically after review.
- For a server ban, contact that server’s administrator. Steam does not control an individual administrator’s server ban.
Steam also says some games may enable phone-number-linked enforcement, which can affect other accounts using the same number. It is not enabled for every game, and the available information does not establish that it applies to Rust; see Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator help.

Facepunch’s Premium Servers announcement, dated 13 March 2025, described an experimental eligibility filter requiring at least $15 in Rust Steam-inventory value at launch and said the threshold could change. That filter is not a ban appeal or a way to restore a banned account’s access. Inventory value does not establish eligibility to play while a ban is active.
