Yes—eligible games from a Steam Family library can be played offline if the game supports Family Sharing and Steam is prepared before you disconnect. Install and update the game, launch it once while online, then switch Steam to Offline Mode. A game that needs an external launcher, online authentication, or another always-online service may still fail.
Quick checklist
- The game appears in your Steam Family library.
- It is installed and fully updated on this device.
- You have launched the exact game successfully while online.
- Steam can remember your account on this computer.
- You have switched Steam to Offline Mode and tested the launch before leaving Wi-Fi.
Valve confirms that family-library games can be played offline when the game supports Family Sharing. That is not a guarantee for every shared title: the game’s own launch and network requirements still apply. See Valve’s Steam Families FAQ and its Offline Mode instructions.
Prepare a shared game before disconnecting
- Confirm family access while online. Steam Families is the current family-library system, replacing the older Family Sharing and Family View arrangement. Family games appear in your library; you can use “Group By Library” to separate them from your own games. Steam Families can be managed in the Steam client, mobile app, or web browser. Valve describes it as intended for household use and allows up to six members.
- Install and update the game. Offline Mode cannot download a missing game or update. Open Steam online and make sure the local game files are fully updated.
- Launch the game once while online. Wait until it reaches a playable state or its main menu, then quit normally. This gives first-run setup, required components, configuration, and any initial authentication a chance to complete. If a publisher launcher or third-party account is involved, check whether it can launch the game without a connection; a successful Steam library listing alone does not establish offline compatibility.
- Allow Steam to retain login information. At login, select “Remember me.” In Steam’s settings, do not select “Don’t save account credentials on this computer.” This is about the local installation being able to start offline; it is not a reason to share your password.
- Switch Steam to Offline Mode while online. In the desktop client, select Steam menu → Go Offline… and confirm. Menu layouts may differ on other devices or in future client versions.
- Test before you leave. Disconnect from Wi-Fi or otherwise go offline, reopen Steam, and launch the game. This practical test is the best way to catch a title-specific launcher or authentication requirement while you can still reconnect.
- Close Steam normally. Valve advises manually closing Steam before shutting down rather than force-quitting it or abruptly powering off, because Offline Mode relies on information stored locally.
Why a shared game may not work offline
There are two separate tests: the game must be eligible to share, and it must be capable of launching offline. A game can pass either test and fail the other.

- It depends on an external launcher or account. A publisher launcher that must sign in, a required third-party account or subscription, or an online check can block launch. Compatibility can vary by game and may change with launcher updates.
- First-run setup or an update is incomplete. A game may need a download, redistributable, or setup step that has not run yet. Reconnect, update Steam and the game, launch it online, complete setup, quit normally, and try Offline Mode again.
- Steam needs you to log in. Valve says Offline Mode has no bypass if Steam requires a login. Reconnect and sign in; this is not reliably fixable after you have lost network access.
- The title is not shareable or accessible to this family member. Steam lists exclusions including games requiring third-party keys, accounts, or subscriptions; free-to-play games and their DLC; regional restrictions; unsupported operating systems; publisher exclusions; and games marked private by their owner. A game missing from the library may also indicate a family membership issue.
- The available copy is in use. A family member may be using the only available copy of that game. Offline Mode does not bypass Steam’s library availability or copy limits.
If a game cannot be shared, check the eligibility and membership details in Steam Families’ FAQ. Valve also notes that household checks and cooldowns after leaving or changing a family can affect joining.

Achievements are associated with the individual Steam account, but whether and when game progress or achievements update after offline play depends on the title. Valve likewise says saved-game behavior depends on the game. If a save matters, test the game’s local-save behavior and make a backup where the game supports one. Do not assume cloud synchronization will protect a save while offline.
Family-library details that can affect your plans
Steam Families permits members to play games from one another’s libraries, but simultaneous use depends on how many copies the family owns. Members can play different games at the same time; if two people want the same title at once, the family may need multiple copies. A game that is locked because another member is using the only available copy has a library-availability problem, not necessarily an Offline Mode problem.

DLC is available to a family member only when the publisher permits sharing it. If family members have multiple copies with different DLC, changing which copy you play can make saves behave inconsistently. For an offline session, use the same shared copy and DLC configuration you tested online, and avoid switching just before disconnecting.

- Is the game visible in your family library? If not, check that it is shareable, not private, available in your region and on your operating system, and that family membership is active.
- Does it launch successfully online? If not, resolve the game, launcher, account, or installation problem before relying on offline play.
- Is it fully updated and installed locally? If not, reconnect and finish the downloads.
- Does it require a launcher or online service? If so, Offline Mode may not work, even if Steam itself is correctly configured.
- Did you explicitly choose Go Offline while connected? If not, reconnect, sign in, and select Steam → Go Offline… before testing again.
- Is the game locked because someone else is playing it? Resolve the copy conflict with your family; switching Steam offline is not a workaround for it.
Steam does not receive important client or game updates in Offline Mode. Reconnect periodically, particularly before travel or after a major game update, and retest the exact shared game before relying on it.

Bottom line
You can play some shared Steam games offline, but sharing access alone is not enough. The game must be eligible for Steam Families, installed and prepared online, and compatible with Offline Mode. Test it on the device you plan to use before disconnecting—especially if it uses a separate launcher, account, or online service.
