Yes. Starfield runs locally on the Windows-based ASUS ROG Ally, but expect to lower graphics settings and often the rendering resolution. The original Z1 Extreme model is the safer choice; the non-Extreme Z1 needs greater compromises. No Ally should be treated as a guaranteed native-1080p, 60-fps machine for this demanding game.
How Starfield runs on the ROG Ally
The Ally is a Windows PC, so its Steam and Xbox app/Microsoft Store editions run as PC games—not through console emulation. ASUS lists support for major PC launchers, including Steam and Xbox Game Pass. The Steam edition installs through Steam; the Microsoft Store edition installs through the Xbox app or Microsoft Store. That establishes compatibility, not performance quality. Starfield is demanding, and results vary with the Ally model, power profile, resolution, driver and BIOS versions, background activity, and the particular scene. Interiors, open planets, cities, and busy settlements can behave differently. There is no single frame-rate figure that can responsibly describe every Ally configuration and current software version.

ASUS lists the original 2023 Ally with Windows 11, a Ryzen Z1-series processor, integrated Radeon graphics, 16GB of memory, a 1080p/120Hz display, and a 512GB SSD configuration. Check the exact model and regional configuration rather than assuming all products called Ally are equivalent. Why the PC requirements do not guarantee good performance
Starfield’s published PC requirements call for 16GB RAM, a 125GB SSD installation, and a desktop-class Radeon RX 5700 or GeForce GTX 1070 Ti minimum GPU, among other requirements. The Ally’s 16GB is shared between the system and integrated graphics, and its GPU is not directly comparable to either listed discrete desktop card. Matching the RAM figure and having an SSD therefore does not mean the Ally will perform like a desktop PC meeting the listed minimum GPU specification.

Starting settings for a more consistent experience
Use this as a starting profile, not a universal “best settings” prescription. The right balance depends on whether you value clarity, steadier delivery, or battery life.

Prepare the handheld
- Install pending Windows updates through Settings → Windows Update.
- Use ASUS utilities, including Armoury Crate, to check for relevant BIOS and driver updates.
- Install Starfield on the internal SSD or another fast SSD-based drive, and leave more than the listed 125GB available if possible.
- When prioritizing performance, plug in the Ally and select its highest available performance or Turbo profile.
- Close unnecessary browsers, launchers, overlays, and background applications before play.
Begin with reduced rendering demands
- Try 720p or 900p rendering if native 1080p is too demanding. The image will be softer, but the GPU has fewer pixels to draw.
- Start at the Low preset, then raise settings selectively if performance allows.
- Enable available upscaling. ASUS describes Radeon Super Resolution support on compatible configurations; its availability and setup depend on the configuration. ASUS’s Ally feature guidance covers its handheld software features.
- Reduce or disable motion blur if the image looks smeared. Lower shadows, volumetric effects, and crowd-related settings first if performance suffers in dense areas.
- Use a frame-rate cap that the device can sustain rather than chasing brief peaks. A steadier lower target can feel better than frequent swings.
Battery play is possible, but a lower-power profile can reduce performance and demanding play can drain the battery quickly. Lower resolution and graphics settings can help, at the cost of image sharpness or detail.

Steam or Xbox app: which edition should you use?

Do not assume a Steam purchase provides Xbox Play Anywhere benefits or access to the Microsoft Store edition. Likewise, subscription catalog availability and terms can change, so check the Xbox app or current regional Game Pass listing before relying on access.
Cloud gaming is different from either local PC installation: the game is streamed, so it avoids the Ally’s local GPU and storage limits, but depends on a compatible service or subscription, regional availability, and a strong, low-latency connection. It is not an offline substitute. ASUS references Xbox cloud services on its ROG Xbox Ally product page.
Storage, offline play, and setup considerations
Starfield lists 125GB of available storage and requires an SSD. A nominal 512GB handheld has less usable room after Windows, recovery files, and other software are accounted for. Leave extra headroom for updates and temporary files; if you keep several large games installed, an SSD upgrade may be more useful than relying on removable storage. Because the game specifies an SSD, do not assume every microSD card is an equivalent installation location.
For local offline play, fully install the game and sign in to the relevant launcher beforehand. Offline access can depend on the store, account, and launcher configuration; do not assume every edition works offline without prior setup or account validation. Cloud gaming requires an internet connection.

Troubleshoot installation, stutter, or image problems
Starfield will not install
- Check that at least 125GB is free, with additional room for updates and temporary files.
- Install pending Windows or launcher updates, then restart and try again.
- Check the health and available capacity of the selected storage device.
- Confirm that the account or subscription has an entitlement to the edition you are trying to install.
The game launches but performs poorly
- Plug in the Ally and select a higher-power profile.
- Update Windows, the BIOS, and graphics drivers, then restart.
- Reduce the rendering resolution to 720p or 900p and enable upscaling if available.
- Lower shadows, volumetric effects, crowd-related settings, and other demanding options; choose a sustainable frame cap.
- Close overlays and background applications. Bethesda recommends checking minimum requirements and disabling overlays such as Steam Overlay or Xbox Game Bar when diagnosing PC performance issues. Bethesda’s PC performance troubleshooting guidance.
- Verify or repair the game files in the launcher, then reboot if the problem persists.
The picture looks blurry
Rendering below 1080p, aggressive upscaling, a low render scale, or motion blur can soften the image. Raise rendering resolution or reduce upscaling if clarity matters more than performance; doing so increases the graphics workload.
Stutter is worst in cities
Busy settlements can stress more than the graphics processor: CPU work, memory bandwidth, and asset streaming can also matter. Lower crowd-related options and use a consistent frame cap rather than assuming that reducing every visual setting will solve every hitch.
Menus or launchers are awkward to control
The Ally is designed for controller-oriented use, but Windows launchers and PC menus may still be easier with the touchscreen, an external mouse, or the on-screen keyboard. Support for a launcher does not guarantee every third-party interface is optimized for handheld controls.

Is the ROG Ally a good way to play Starfield?
- Already own a Z1 Extreme Ally: Try the reduced-resolution, low-settings approach before considering new hardware.
- Own the non-Extreme Z1: It can run the game, but expect to make more compromises; consider cloud play or another device if those trade-offs are unacceptable.
- Buying an Ally mainly for Starfield: Prefer the strongest model within budget, but compare current independent tests for the exact device and game version. Product names alone do not guarantee a large performance jump.
- Want a console-like, high-quality 60-fps experience: An Ally is a poor fit for that expectation. A gaming PC, capable laptop, or console is better suited to prioritizing sustained performance and a larger display.
- Value portability most: The Ally makes Starfield available in a handheld form, with the understanding that power, image quality, and battery life require trade-offs.
