Yes—Zenless Zone Zero can run on some Linux PCs and Steam Decks through Proton or Wine, but HoYoverse does not list Linux as a supported operating system. Compatibility can change with game and launcher updates, so treat this as an unofficial setup rather than a dependable, supported install.
Is Zenless Zone Zero officially supported on Linux?
No native Linux version or official Linux support is documented in HoYoverse’s PC requirements, which specify Windows 10 64-bit or later. Running the Windows version through Proton or Wine is community compatibility, not a promise that HoYoverse will support Linux troubleshooting or keep the game working after every update.
As of August 18, 2026, community reports and launcher guidance indicate that the game can work on Linux with particular compatibility runners. Success varies by launcher, patch, hardware, graphics settings, and distribution. “It launches” also does not mean it is stable through login, updates, gameplay, or the next patch.

Does the Steam version work on Linux or Steam Deck?
The Steam listing names Windows 10 64-bit as the operating-system requirement and discloses kernel-level anti-cheat. A Steam release is not the same as a Linux build or an official Steam Deck compatibility designation. Steam’s Proton can still run some Windows games on Linux, but Valve and HoYoverse do not guarantee that route for this game.

Steam is a sensible first attempt if you already use it: it handles the download, updates, controller configuration, and storage in one library. Reports in Proton’s compatibility tracker and an older report describe issues including graphics failures, crashes, and login problems. These are reports from particular setups, not proof that every Linux or Deck installation fails—or succeeds.
If you already have progress on another platform, pay attention to the Steam account-linking flow. The HoYoverse account-linking information warns that creating a new HoYoverse ID during first login may create a separate Steam character rather than load your existing progress. Choose the existing-account route carefully.
Try Steam and Proton first
- Install Zenless Zone Zero from Steam.
- In your Steam library, open the game’s Properties, then Compatibility.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool and select Proton Experimental.
- Launch the game and sign in with the HoYoverse account you intend to use.
- If it fails, try a current maintained GE-Proton build or another Proton version before reinstalling.
Steam’s Proton project provides the compatibility layer; it cannot make an unsupported configuration guaranteed. Runner behavior changes, so if an update breaks the game, test a maintained alternative rather than assuming the game files are corrupted.

Use HoYoPlay through Heroic
For a non-Steam installation, Heroic Games Launcher can manage the Windows HoYoPlay launcher under Proton. Its anime-game guidance identifies GE-Proton10-x with UMU enabled as a workable configuration for Zenless Zone Zero. That is a starting point, not a permanent guarantee or universal runner recommendation.
- Install Heroic using your distribution’s software center or the Flatpak route in its Linux Quick Start Guide.
- Open Wine Manager and install a current GE-Proton build.
- Add or install the Windows HoYoPlay launcher in Heroic, then choose the Proton runner in the game’s settings. Leave UMU enabled unless the current troubleshooting guidance for your setup says otherwise.
- Install Zenless Zone Zero through HoYoPlay and launch it from Heroic.
- If you want the game in Steam, use Heroic’s shortcut option after confirming it launches.
Heroic’s Linux guide also explains runner installation and Steam shortcuts. With a Flatpak installation, external drives may need explicit Flatpak access; missing permissions can prevent Heroic from seeing a library or writing updates.
When Lutris makes more sense
Lutris’s community game entry offers HoYoPlay and Sleepy Launcher installation options. Consider it if you already use Lutris, want more direct Wine-prefix and runner controls, or are troubleshooting permissions in a Flatpak setup. Community scripts can lag behind launcher or game changes, so a listed installer is not assurance that it works with the latest patch.

If you have existing game files, do not move folders into a guessed location. Back up the directory and identify the Wine prefix and paths the chosen launcher expects before reusing an installation.

What hardware and free space do you need?
Linux does not remove the game’s Windows-era hardware and storage demands. HoYoverse’s minimum PC requirements list Windows 10 64-bit or later, a seventh-generation Intel Core i5 or equivalent AMD processor, 8 GB RAM, an NVIDIA GTX 970 or similar GPU, and DirectX 11.1 or later. Those are Windows requirements; they do not guarantee equivalent performance through Proton.
Storage figures differ by source and installation stage. HoYoverse lists 57 GB for the game plus 58 GB during decompression in its requirements, while its storage guidance gives about 61 GB for the final PC installation and recommends roughly 122 GB free before installation. Steam lists 75 GB available space. Leave around 120–125 GB free when possible to allow for installation and patching; the final installed size is not the same as the temporary space needed during setup.

Proton translates Windows graphics calls, and Linux driver quality varies by GPU and distribution. Integrated graphics may launch the game but deliver poor frame rates. Do not assume newer Windows PC features—DX12, ray tracing, super resolution, or frame generation—will work reliably through Proton. HoYoverse’s PC graphics-feature information describes Windows hardware support, not guaranteed Linux compatibility.

First identify where the failure occurs: before HoYoPlay opens, during account login, while patching, when the game starts, after entering the game, or only with advanced graphics enabled. That distinction helps avoid changing unrelated settings.
- Restart the launcher and system, then check whether the game is undergoing server maintenance.
- Switch to Proton Experimental or another current maintained runner. Heroic’s guidance currently points to GE-Proton10-x with UMU for its setup; Lutris reports show that runner results can differ between configurations.
- If the game reaches its graphics settings, disable ray tracing and frame generation, and prefer DX11 or a more compatible graphics mode while diagnosing. The Proton issue reports include graphics-related failures, but a setting is not a universal fix.
- Use the launcher’s verify or repair option for game files, and check that the drive has room for updates and temporary decompression.
- Update your GPU driver and distribution packages. On Heroic Flatpak, confirm the app has access to the drive where the game is installed.
- If the prefix appears damaged, test a fresh Wine prefix rather than layering random changes onto the old one. Back up any files you need before replacing or deleting a prefix.
- For a Steam diagnosis, add
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%to the game’s launch options. Proton’s documentation describes logging; the file is normally written to your home directory unlessPROTON_LOG_DIRis set. Include a relevant log when reporting a compatibility issue.
An Intel-related login freeze appears in an individual Proton report. Treat it as a possible hardware-specific symptom, not a general diagnosis of Intel systems.

What to expect on Steam Deck
Some users report success on Steam Deck, while other compatibility reports describe failures. A game that opens in Desktop Mode is not automatically comfortable in Game Mode: launcher focus, controller input, shader compilation, first-launch stutter, and performance can differ. No reliable performance or battery-life figure is established here, and a later patch can change the result.
- Check internal storage before installing; the temporary decompression requirement can exceed the final game size.
- Try the Steam version first. Some non-Steam installations or launcher setup may require Desktop Mode.
- Allow for shader compilation and possible stutter on first launch, and check controller focus if input stays in the launcher.
- Keep in mind that a patch can disrupt a working setup; a Steam Deck is a poor choice specifically for this game if you need guaranteed access.
Is using Proton safe for your account?
Steam discloses kernel-level anti-cheat for the game, and Linux compatibility reports show that anti-cheat or launcher behavior can interfere with startup. The available official sources do not establish that ordinary Proton use is always allowed or always bannable, so there is no sound basis to promise zero account risk. Using Windows is the safer choice if account certainty and supported troubleshooting matter more than avoiding Windows.
Do not use cheat software, memory editors, injectors, modified clients, or anti-cheat bypasses. HoYoverse’s community rules are the relevant official reference for prohibited tools and conduct.
Which route should you choose?

If you are comfortable changing runners and recovering from a broken patch, Linux is worth trying. If you need predictable updates, official support, or the lowest uncertainty around account access, use a supported Windows installation instead.
