Usually, no—not with a normal HDMI cable. Most desktop PCs and laptops have HDMI output, designed to send a picture to a monitor or TV. The PS4 also has HDMI output, so connecting the two outputs normally produces no picture. To play on a computer, use Sony’s free PS Remote Play app, connect the PS4 through a capture card, or verify that your unusual computer model genuinely has HDMI input.
Choose the right connection for your goal
| Goal | Best method |
|---|---|
| Play on a laptop or PC without buying hardware | PS Remote Play |
| Record gameplay or livestream through OBS | Capture card plus recording software |
| Lowest possible display latency | TV or monitor connected directly to the PS4 |
| Use a computer with a genuine HDMI input | Direct PS4 HDMI connection, if the model supports receiving video |
| No TV and the PS4 is not configured | Temporarily use any TV/monitor, or install a capture card |
Why a normal HDMI cable usually does not work
HDMI is directional. The PS4’s port is HDMI OUT; it sends video and audio to a screen. A graphics-card HDMI socket and the HDMI socket on most laptops are also outputs. They cannot receive the PS4’s signal. Sony’s setup documentation shows the PS4 HDMI OUT connected to a screen’s HDMI input: PS4 support.
Check the exact computer model’s manual for the words HDMI input. Merely having an HDMI-shaped socket is not evidence that it accepts video. An HDMI-to-USB cable is not a passive fix: inexpensive products sold this way are generally capture devices, with their own latency, resolution limits and software requirements. An HDMI switch only selects sources for a display, and an HDMI splitter duplicates a signal; neither makes a normal PC receive HDMI.
Method 1: Play with PS Remote Play (free)
Remote Play streams the PS4’s screen and controls across your network. It is the simplest no-purchase option for casual play, but it is not a direct HDMI feed. Sony supports Windows PCs and Macs. Its current requirements list Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11, a seventh-generation Intel Core processor or later, 2 GB RAM, 100 MB storage, a 1,024×768-or-higher display, a sound card and a USB port. On macOS, Sony lists Big Sur, Monterey, Ventura, Sonoma, Sequoia and Tahoe, with 2 GB RAM and 40 MB storage. Check the current requirements at Sony’s PC and Mac Remote Play page.

Prepare the PS4
- Open Settings > Remote Play Connection Settings and turn on Enable Remote Play.
- Go to Settings > Account Management > Activate as Your Primary PS4 > Activate. One PS4 per account can be activated as primary.
- For wake-from-sleep access, open Settings > Power Save Settings > Set Features Available in Rest Mode. Enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS4 from Network.
Initial configuration is easier with a TV or monitor, particularly if the console needs an update or manual registration. Afterward, Remote Play can wake a PS4 from Rest Mode and show its interface without a television. Sony’s overview is at playstation.com/en-us/remote-play.
Connect from Windows or Mac
- Download and install the official PS Remote Play application.
- Connect a DUALSHOCK 4, DualSense or DualSense Edge controller. A USB-connected DUALSHOCK 4 is the most straightforward choice on Windows; advanced features vary by computer and software.
- Open the app and sign in with the same PlayStation account used on the PS4.
- Select PS4 and let the app search for the console. If discovery fails, use its manual-registration option.
Sony recommends at least 5 Mbps upload and download bandwidth, with 15 Mbps recommended for better performance. Those are bandwidth recommendations, not latency guarantees: Wi-Fi interference, distance from the router, congestion and high ping can still cause stutter, softness or disconnections.
Remote Play limitations
- It is a compressed network stream, so controls can feel delayed, especially over Wi-Fi or an internet connection away from home.
- Resolution and frame-rate choices are adjustable in the app, but actual performance follows the network.
- Games requiring PlayStation VR or other special peripherals are excluded, as are games streamed through PlayStation Plus Premium.
- Competitive games are usually better on a directly connected display.
Method 2: Use a capture card
A capture card receives HDMI from the PS4 and presents it to the computer as a video source for viewing, recording or streaming. The usual wiring is:

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
PS4 HDMI OUT → capture-card HDMI IN
capture-card HDMI OUT → TV/monitor (optional passthrough)
capture card → PC or Mac by USB
This is the arrangement documented in Elgato’s PS4 Game Capture setup.
Hardware setup
- Plug the PS4 HDMI cable into the capture device’s HDMI IN, not HDMI OUT.
- If the device has passthrough, connect HDMI OUT to a TV or monitor.
- Connect the capture device to the computer using its required USB cable, preferably directly rather than through an unreliable hub.
- Install the manufacturer’s software or drivers, then select the device in your recording application.
Disable HDCP for supported gameplay capture
Connect the PS4 to a screen, then open Settings > System and turn off Enable HDCP. Shut down or reconnect the capture setup and test a game. Elgato explains this requirement at its PS4 and HDCP guidance. Protected movies and services such as Netflix or Hulu may still produce a black screen. Do not use HDCP-bypass methods to capture protected content.
Rank #3
- 2K 30FPS & 1080p 60FPS HDMI Capture Card: The 4K@30Hz input and 2K@30Hz output resolutions offer dual benefits. Show the PS4 in OBS Studio
- Install OBS Studio from obsproject.com/download. The page currently lists OBS Studio 32.2.2, released August 14, 2026; its Windows release supports Windows 10/11 and its macOS release supports macOS 13 or newer.
- Open OBS and create or select a scene.
- Add a source using the current Video Capture Device source type.
- Select the capture card and match its resolution and frame rate to the PS4 output.
- If audio is absent, add or enable the capture card’s audio input separately.
- Check the preview and make a short recording before livestreaming.
You can play from the OBS preview, but processing adds potential latency. For responsive play, use the capture card’s HDMI passthrough display; the computer can record a separate feed while the TV or monitor shows the direct signal. Casual players may find the preview acceptable, especially in a laptop-only setup.
Audio and peripheral caveats
Game audio, microphone audio and party-chat audio are separate paths. A headset connected to the controller can prevent game sound from reaching HDMI, while party chat may require additional console and software settings. Check the capture card’s monitoring device and OBS audio mixer rather than assuming one HDMI track contains everything.

The rare exception: a computer with HDMI input
If the manufacturer’s specifications explicitly identify an HDMI IN, connect PS4 HDMI OUT → computer HDMI IN and open the computer’s input-display utility. Support depends on that model’s firmware and software. A desktop GPU port or ordinary laptop HDMI port should be presumed output-only until the manual says otherwise.

Troubleshooting by symptom
No signal from a direct cable
- The computer port is probably HDMI OUT.
- Select the correct display input if a capture device or monitor is involved.
- Confirm the PS4 is in the capture card’s HDMI IN and that the device has USB power.
- Check supported resolution and frame rate.
- For capture, verify HDCP is disabled for gameplay.
Remote Play cannot find the PS4
- Use the same PlayStation account on both devices.
- Confirm Remote Play is enabled and the PS4 is activated as primary.
- Test with both devices near each other on the same network.
- Restart the PS4, router and app; use Ethernet where possible.
- Try manual registration and confirm current PS4 system software.
Capture software shows a black screen
- Check HDCP, HDMI direction, USB connection, drivers and firmware.
- Remove an unreliable hub and test a supported resolution.
- Remember that protected media can remain unavailable even when gameplay works.
Remote Play is laggy or stutters
- Use Ethernet for the PS4 and, if practical, the computer.
- Prefer 5 GHz Wi-Fi, stop downloads and streaming, and move closer to the router.
- Lower Remote Play video quality.
- Avoid fast competitive play if the delay remains unacceptable.
No audio
- Enable the capture card’s audio source in OBS.
- Check whether a controller headset is taking over output.
- Set the correct monitoring device and configure party chat separately.
Which setup should you choose?
Try PS Remote Play first if you want free laptop play and mainly play casually. Buy a capture card if recording, livestreaming or HDMI passthrough matters. A current branded option is Elgato Game Capture 4K S, listed at $159.99 on August 18, 2026, with USB-C, UVC, passthrough and up-to-4K60 capture features: official product page. Its capabilities may exceed what a PS4-only setup needs.
Elgato lists HD60 X at $179.99 on the same date but marks it discontinued; existing units remain supported, so it makes more sense for an owner or legitimate remaining stock than as the default new purchase: HD60 X product page. Generic UVC USB capture devices can cost less, but verify HDMI input, USB 3 requirements, supported resolution and frame rate, audio handling, passthrough, operating-system support, warranty and return policy. For the lowest latency and least complexity, use a TV or monitor directly connected to the PS4.
