Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYes—but only if that Xbox 360 game is on Xbox’s backward-compatibility catalog. A supported disc downloads the compatible game to your Xbox One, and you must keep the disc in the drive to play. An unsupported disc will not work just because it fits.
How to check whether your Xbox 360 disc works
-
Search for the exact game title in the official Xbox backward-compatibility catalog. Compatibility is determined title by title, so do not assume that every Xbox 360 game is supported.
-
If the game is listed and your Xbox One has a disc drive, insert the Xbox 360 disc. Microsoft says the game will download to the console’s hard drive; the disc does not run the original Xbox 360 version directly.
-
Keep the disc in the drive while playing. It serves as the entitlement to play the disc-based game.

- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
Microsoft Support describes the process this way: “For disc-based games, insert the disc. If it’s on the list, the game will download. You’ll need to keep the disc in the drive to play.” Read the Xbox Support instructions for the complete guidance.
Disc and digital versions: what changes
| Play path | What you need | Download | What must remain available to play |
|---|---|---|---|
| Physical disc | A disc for a supported Xbox 360 game and an Xbox One with a disc drive | The game downloads after you insert the disc | The Xbox 360 disc must stay in the drive |
| Digital license | Ownership of a supported digital game | Install the game from Ready to Install | The digital license; no game disc is involved |
These are two ways to access supported games, not a way to make an unsupported title compatible. Check the catalog before buying or troubleshooting a disc.

What backward compatibility does—and does not—mean
Xbox One supports selected Xbox 360 games, not the full Xbox 360 library. Microsoft also describes some original Xbox games as playable on Xbox One, but compatibility does not work in reverse: Xbox One games do not run on Xbox 360 or the original Xbox. The Xbox Wire list published January 21, 2016 is historical; use the current catalog to check a title rather than relying on an older list.
