If you deleted only the save stored on your Xbox, a cloud-synchronized copy may still download when you sign in to the same account, connect to Xbox network, and launch the game. If the cloud copy was also deleted, replaced by a newer save, or overwritten by corrupted data, recovery may not be possible. The outcome depends on which copies remain and how that game handles saves.
First, identify what was deleted
Xbox save data may exist both on the console and in cloud storage. Microsoft explains that Xbox One and later titles can store data locally and synchronize it to the cloud when connected. During an offline session, a game saves locally without syncing, so the local and cloud copies can differ. Microsoft’s Connected Storage overview and GDK documentation on connected storage sessions describe this synchronization behavior.

How to try restoring a local deletion
- Sign into the account used to play the game. Cloud synchronization is associated with the account, so a different account may not have the relevant save.
- Connect the Xbox to Xbox network. Cloud synchronization requires connectivity; an offline session does not sync its local saves.
- Launch the game and let synchronization complete. Microsoft says saved data becomes available on another device after synchronization. Exact prompts and screens can vary by game and console.
- Check the result in the game. Confirm that the expected progress appears before taking any further action involving save data.
Microsoft’s developer documentation describes cross-device availability after synchronization: “Saved data will be available on any other device which runs your title after synchronization occurs.” This is a description of connected storage, not a guarantee that a deleted cloud save can be restored. What to do if Xbox shows a sync conflict
If the console asks you to choose between local and cloud data, pause and read the dates, progress details, and consequences shown in the prompt. A choice may determine which version is kept or synchronized. The available Microsoft documentation describes synchronization and data-ownership decisions for developers, but it does not establish one universally safe choice for every consumer conflict. If you cannot tell which copy has the progress you want, avoid guessing and check the game publisher’s support instructions.

When recovery is unlikely
- “Delete everywhere” was selected: Microsoft Support guidance quoted in a Community answer says this removes the cloud copy along with the local copy. A separate Community response says there is no recovery route if the cloud save is missing too; treat that as community guidance, not an absolute Microsoft policy. - The old save was overwritten: If a newer save has synchronized, the earlier state may no longer be available through normal Xbox synchronization.
- A corrupted save synchronized: Whether a publisher can help is game-specific. For Monster Hunter: World, Capcom says saves are stored through Xbox cloud and local storage rather than on Capcom’s game servers. Its guidance says a manually overwritten or deleted save, or save data corrupted and uploaded to the cloud, cannot be recovered. Xbox 360 and backward-compatible games
Treat Xbox 360 saves and backward-compatible titles as a separate case. The available guidance does not establish a current, authoritative consumer recovery procedure for every 360 save-storage setup. Confirm the specific game, console generation, and whether its save was stored locally or in cloud storage, then follow the relevant Xbox or publisher support instructions.

What to avoid while troubleshooting
- Do not choose “Delete everywhere” when trying to recover a missing local copy; the quoted Xbox Support guidance says it also removes the cloud save.
- Do not choose a local or cloud version during a sync conflict unless you understand which progress it contains and what the prompt says will happen.
- Do not assume an external drive or generic recovery utility can restore a cloud save that was deleted everywhere; no such method is established by the available guidance.
