Yes. Hall-effect joystick modules can replace the standard sticks in supported Xbox One and Xbox Series controllers, but this is a soldering repair—not a stick-cap swap. Match the module to the exact controller model and revision, and plan to recalibrate after installation.
What changes when you replace an Xbox stick?
A standard Xbox stick uses potentiometers: moving contacts travel over resistive tracks to report position. Hall-effect modules use magnets and magnetic sensing instead, so the sensing parts do not rub against one another. That can avoid wear in the potentiometer’s contact track, but it does not make the entire physical stick mechanism immune to wear or failure. iFixit explains the difference between the sensing methods.
Replacing the module means opening the controller, removing the original joystick assembly from the board, clearing its solder holes, and installing and soldering a new module. A repair guide from ConsoleMods describes Hall-effect replacement for Xbox One and Series controllers; it does not establish a universal compatibility chart for every board revision. Check the guide, then verify the exact controller model and revision with the part maker or seller before buying.
Which replacement option fits your goal?
| Option | What it changes | Compatibility and calibration notes |
|---|---|---|
| Hall-effect module | Replaces the joystick module with one using magnetic sensing. | ConsoleMods covers Xbox One / Series installation, but does not provide a complete revision chart. Verify the specific part fit and calibration support with its manufacturer or seller. ConsoleMods guide |
| TMR module | Uses tunnel magnetoresistance, a different magnetic sensing technology from Hall effect. | iFixit lists a GuliKit TMR kit for Xbox Series X/S and Elite Series 2 Model 1797. The listing requires soldering and does not recommend the kit for Xbox One or Elite Series 1 Model 1698 because calibration software is unavailable for those models. These limitations apply to that kit, not necessarily to every Hall-effect module. See the kit’s listing |
| Standard potentiometer replacement | Replaces the stick’s potentiometer assembly without changing to Hall-effect sensing. | iFixit documents a soldered replacement and recalibration for Xbox Series X/S controllers. Its listed assembly does not include the joystick cover. See the replacement-part listing |
These are not interchangeable descriptions: a replacement potentiometer assembly is not a Hall-effect upgrade, and a TMR module is not a Hall-effect module. Compare the exact controller model, sensor type, soldering requirements, calibration support, included parts, and whether the item is a complete joystick module or only an assembly component.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How difficult is the repair?
Expect advanced board-level work. iFixit rates its Xbox Series X/S joystick replacement guide as difficult and identifies soldering as required. Its guide covers a standard potentiometer replacement rather than a Hall-effect upgrade, but it illustrates the disassembly and soldering involved. View the Series X/S repair guide.
The ConsoleMods Hall-effect procedure calls for hot-air rework with a desoldering pump or a desoldering iron, plus a soldering iron. It also lists Kapton tape, isopropyl alcohol, cotton swabs, and a USB cable for connecting to a PC. The work includes protecting nearby components from heat, removing the old module, clearing through-holes, cleaning the board area, and soldering in the replacement. The guide is not a substitute for model-specific instructions or practiced soldering technique.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Choose the module only after confirming the controller’s exact model and board revision.
- Use model-specific teardown instructions; do not assume an Xbox One, Series, or Elite part fits another variant.
- Do not treat a basic soldering kit as sufficient for every board or repair. Removing a multi-pin module cleanly requires appropriate desoldering equipment and care around nearby components.
- If you have not done through-hole desoldering and board soldering, consider a repair technician rather than risking damage to the controller.
How do you calibrate after installation?
Calibration is part of the job, not an optional finishing touch. For Series X/S controllers, iFixit says recalibration can be done through the Xbox console or the Xbox Accessories software on a PC. ConsoleMods describes using the PC app after replacement.
- Connect the controller to a PC with USB, and open or update the Xbox Accessories app if an update is available.
- Use the app’s controller recalibration option and calibrate each stick.
- Check stick response, circularity, and deadzones afterward. If one stick behaves strangely or calibration produces unusual input or detection behavior, run calibration again for that stick.
Software labels can vary by app version, so follow the recalibration option presented for the connected controller. For the specific iFixit/GuliKit TMR kit, iFixit advises updating controller firmware before calibration; it also excludes Xbox One and Elite Series 1 Model 1698 from its recommendation because the required calibration software is unavailable for those models. Do not generalize that kit-specific exclusion to all Hall-effect installations.

What should you check before ordering?
- Exact fit: Confirm the controller model and revision against the replacement listing or manufacturer’s compatibility information. “Xbox” or “Xbox Series” in a listing title is not enough to establish fit across generations and Elite variants.
- Sensor type: Confirm whether the part is Hall effect, TMR, or a conventional potentiometer. Magnetic sensing alone does not mean the module is Hall effect.
- Part scope: Check whether you are buying a complete joystick module or only a potentiometer assembly, and whether a stick cover is included.
- Calibration: Verify that you can access compatible calibration software or console tools for the controller and replacement you choose.
- Repair capability: Confirm you can safely desolder the existing module and solder the replacement with equipment suited to the board.
