Yes—if you mean the original Final Fantasy (FFI), getting the airship lets you revisit previous areas. The exact answer depends on which series entry you’re playing, though: airship travel works differently across the games.
What the airship changes in the original Final Fantasy
Square Enix says that gaining access to the airship opens up the world and gives players the freedom to revisit previous areas, alongside continuing the story. In FFI, it is therefore a way to return to earlier parts of the overworld, not just a tool for reaching the next story destination. Square Enix’s FFI feature states this directly.
How to reach the airship
The airship is buried on the overworld. You need the levistone to reach it; finding the airship is the step that opens up this broader travel. Square Enix describes the airship and levistone in its FFI feature from January 20, 2022.
Where the NES airship can land
Being able to revisit areas does not mean the NES airship can land on every kind of terrain. The NES instruction manual says to use the airship’s shadow to judge whether it can land and specifies that it can land only on open plains. You can travel over the overworld, but landing is restricted by the terrain below.

Does this apply to every Final Fantasy?
No single rule covers the entire series. Airship controls and access conditions vary by entry. For example, Square Enix says that in Final Fantasy XII, free travel around the world becomes available after obtaining a new skystone for the Strahl. - In FFI: The airship opens up the world and lets you revisit previous areas.
- In the NES version: You can land only on open plains.
- Across the series: Check the specific entry, since travel systems and when free travel becomes available differ.
The official FFI guidance supports returning to previous areas, but it does not list every location or confirm that every place stays reachable after every story event.
