Yes. OBS is not required: YouTube’s encoder workflow accepts a supported video feed sent to the stream URL with the stream key. You can run a compatible encoder on a cloud server instead, but keeping a stream genuinely continuous requires you to manage the encoder process, outbound bandwidth, monitoring and recovery. YouTube’s guidance explains how to connect an encoder; it does not certify a particular cloud server or promise uninterrupted service.
What you need before setting up the stream
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube’s general setup guidance says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days, and be operated by someone at least 16 years old. Check YouTube’s livestreaming eligibility and setup instructions.
- A cloud server whose operating environment can run your chosen encoder, plus enough sustained outbound bandwidth for the stream.
- The content you plan to broadcast and the rights needed to use it on Google services, including music rights where applicable.
A cloud server moves the encoder off your home computer; it does not remove the need to configure, supervise and troubleshoot the encoder.
Set up an encoder on a cloud server
- Enable livestreaming and open YouTube Studio. Complete any channel verification or activation steps required by YouTube. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Get the stream URL and key. Copy the ingest URL and stream key shown in the Live Control Room. The key authorizes an encoder to send video to your channel, so store it as a secret. If you believe it has been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Install a compatible encoder on the server. Choose software that runs in the server’s operating environment and can send a supported feed. YouTube’s workflow requires an encoder, not OBS specifically; YouTube does not prescribe a cloud-server image, instance size or provider.
- Configure the ingest protocol. Use RTMPS when your encoder supports it: YouTube recommends it because it encrypts the RTMP connection over TLS/SSL. Copy the current RTMPS URL from the Live Control Room and pair it with the stream key. YouTube also supports HLS ingest for compatible workflows, including some codecs not supported over RTMP; confirm the current stream setup and encoder settings before switching protocols rather than treating HLS as a drop-in replacement. See YouTube’s encoder setup and ingest instructions.
- Choose video settings together, not in isolation. YouTube’s standard RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Select the resolution and frame rate first, then use YouTube’s current codec-specific bitrate table. For example, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p/30 fps; that figure is not a universal recommendation for every 1080p stream. Check the current YouTube encoder settings for the combination you plan to use.
- Allow bandwidth headroom. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate and advises running an upload speed test. For a cloud deployment, confirm that the selected server and region can sustain the outbound rate; that is an operational requirement, not a guarantee from YouTube or a cloud provider. Compare protocol and codec support, sustained outbound bandwidth, restart and failover options, recording needs, and the provider’s documented limits and current cost.
- Start a test and inspect it in Studio. Preview the incoming feed, check stream health, and verify picture and sound before relying on the setup. Test a restart and, if continuity matters, a backup encoder or failover path. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and testing encoder failover; it does not specify an always-on cloud architecture. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
What makes a cloud stream actually stay on
The encoder process must keep sending the feed, and the server must maintain network connectivity. A continuous process alone does not establish uninterrupted availability. Plan how the encoder will be supervised and restarted after a process or server interruption, how stream health will be monitored, and what backup encoder or fallback you will use if availability matters. The YouTube guidance recommends monitoring and failover testing, but does not guarantee a cloud host’s service or prescribe a particular recovery design.
YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not establish provider-specific VM sizing or cloud costs. Before choosing a host, check its published limits and pricing for the server, sustained outbound traffic, persistent processes and any recording storage you need. Budget for the selected configuration rather than assuming that a low server price includes every part of a continuous stream.

Plan separately for replays and content rights
Streams longer than 12 hours
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. This is an archive warning, not a statement that every live feed must stop at 12 hours. If a replay matters, keep a separate recording or use tested sessions under the archive threshold. YouTube’s wording is: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” See YouTube’s archive guidance.
Music, video and reused content
Being able to transmit a feed does not grant permission to use what it contains. YouTube’s live-stream terms require compliance with its Community Guidelines and the necessary rights for exploitation on Google services, including music licensing rights where applicable. Check the rights for both audio and video before leaving a stream running. Read YouTube’s Terms of Service.

Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube receives no feed: Check that the encoder is running, the URL and key match the selected stream, and the configured protocol matches the URL. If the key may have been exposed or changed, reset it in YouTube Studio and replace it in the encoder.
- The connection drops or stream health degrades: Compare the selected bitrate with the server’s sustained outbound capacity and leave the recommended 20% headroom. Check server and network interruptions, then test process restart and any backup path.
- The stream looks or sounds wrong: Verify the encoder’s codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate mode and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current settings. Preview the feed and check audio and video before relaunching a long session.
- The archive is missing: A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Use a separate recording if the replay is important; do not assume a long live feed will produce a replay.
- A stream is interrupted for rights or policy reasons: Review the channel’s livestream eligibility and confirm rights for all broadcast material. A cloud server does not bypass YouTube’s channel restrictions or content rules.
