Yes—some programmable graphing calculators can run Doom or a Doom-derived port, but an ordinary scientific calculator cannot, and compatibility depends on the exact model, operating system, and software. The clearest documented NumWorks example is a Doom-like clone, not the original Doom engine. On TI-Nspire and Casio color graphing models, community projects have reported ports, but those are unofficial and may depend on model-specific tools or firmware.
What counts as running Doom?
The phrase can describe three different things, and the distinction matters when judging a calculator demo.
- A Doom engine port: an adaptation of the original Doom engine that runs compatible Doom game data, often called a WAD or IWAD. This is the strongest meaning of “Doom on a calculator.”
- A Doom clone: an independently written game that borrows the first-person shooting or ray-casting style but does not run the original engine or levels. The public NumWorks project describes itself as a clone made from scratch (project repository).
- Emulation or streaming: the calculator displays a game being run elsewhere, or acts as a controller. That is a technical workaround, not native calculator gameplay.
A title screen or a short video of a rendered frame also does not establish that a game is playable. Useful evidence includes working controls, sustained gameplay, and whether it runs without a connected computer.

Which calculators are plausible candidates?
| Calculator family | What is established | Difficulty and caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Basic scientific calculators, such as Casio fx-991 or TI-30 | No practical Doom platform is established. | Not realistic: these generally lack a suitable application environment, memory, display, and way to load native software. |
| TI-Nspire CX / CX II | Community discussions describe Doom-related ports using Ndless, a community environment for native programs (community discussion). | High; model revision and OS version matter. Historical compatibility does not establish that a current retail unit or updated OS works. |
| Casio fx-CG10 / fx-CG20 / fx-CG50 family | Community reports describe CGDoom and other game projects on color fx-CG models (community discussion). | Medium to high; this is not Casio-supported Doom. Python demonstrations and native add-ins are not interchangeable. |
| TI-83 / TI-84 family | These calculators accept user programs, but the cited official TI material establishes transfer support—not a Doom port. | High and model-dependent. TI-83 Plus, monochrome TI-84 Plus, TI-84 Plus CE, and TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition are distinct targets. |
| NumWorks | A public Doom-like clone exists; its repository documents building and uploading the application (project repository). | Moderate for experimentation, but the repository is archived and describes a clone, not confirmed original Doom. |
The Can It Run Doom archive catalogs ports across unusual hardware, but an entry is not proof that a port is current, complete, or straightforward to install.

TI-Nspire CX and CX II
Ndless has historically enabled native programs beyond the calculator’s normal environment, and community posts describe Doom-related use. That does not mean every CX or CX II can run the same build: exploit availability and software support depend on the exact hardware and operating-system version. Check current Ndless and port documentation for the specific unit before changing firmware; a newer OS can block an older installation path.
Casio fx-CG models
The fx-CG family’s color display and programmable features make it a more plausible target than a basic scientific calculator. Casio documents loading Python programs onto the fx-CG50, but that official workflow does not certify community C/C++ add-ins or Doom ports. A Python ray-casting demo, a calculator-language game, and an engine port are different kinds of software.

TI-83 and TI-84 variants
TI’s transfer tools make it possible to move programs to supported calculators; they do not provide a universal Doom installer. Older monochrome models and color models differ in processor, screen, memory, and software ecosystem, so a file for one TI-84 variant should not be assumed to work on another.
NumWorks
The archived numworks_doom project is useful as a documented clone example. Its README gives make build to build the app and make run to run it with a connected calculator; it also describes downloading a release and uploading it through the NumWorks application system. Those commands belong to that repository, not to every NumWorks project or to original Doom. Check NumWorks’ current emulator and app information for the platform’s current workflow.

Why can a calculator run a game like Doom?
Doom’s engine is compact enough that enthusiasts can adapt it to hardware far less capable than a modern PC. A successful port still needs more than raw processing power:
- A CPU and enough memory to execute the adapted engine.
- Storage for the program and, for a genuine Doom port, compatible game data.
- A display and refresh rate that make the image usable.
- A programmable environment or a way to run native code.
- A method to transfer files and controls that can be mapped to movement and actions.
On a calculator, operating-system restrictions, memory layout, screen updates, and keypad controls can be bigger obstacles than the theoretical speed of the processor. That is why a graphing calculator with community native-code support is a more credible target than a scientific calculator, and why “it has a color screen” is not enough.

How to approach an installation safely
There is no universal Doom installer: steps vary by model, port, and firmware. Use this sequence before putting unofficial software on a calculator you depend on.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Identify the exact model and revision. Record the complete name, not just “TI-Nspire” or “Casio.”
- Record the OS or firmware version. Do not update first; an update may remove a compatibility path used by a community tool.
- Find a port built for that model. Confirm whether it is an engine port, a clone, or a demo, and check its release notes and supported versions.
- Back up calculator data. Keep schoolwork and any recovery files somewhere outside the calculator.
- Read the model-specific installation and recovery instructions before installing. Do not substitute files or firmware intended for another model.
- Use the appropriate transfer route. TI documents TI Connect, TI Connect CE, and TI-Nspire software for transferring supported programs. Casio’s USB steps apply to Python files on the fx-CG50, not to CGDoom. NumWorks’ current application workflow may differ from the archived project’s directions.
- Use only legally obtained game data. Engine code and commercial Doom data are separate; a port does not grant permission to download copyrighted WAD files.
- Test without deleting or replacing the calculator’s original software. Know the project’s recovery process before you begin.
TI explicitly warns that third-party shell programs can cause lockups or malfunctions, even though its official documentation covers program transfer (TI programming and transfer guidance). Casio’s fx-CG50 Python instructions say to connect by USB, select F1 for USB Flash, open the calculator as an external drive, copy the program to the root folder, and eject the drive. That is a supported Python file-transfer path, not confirmation of a Doom add-in procedure.

What can go wrong?
- Wrong model or OS: a program may fail to launch, or the community environment it relies on may not work on that firmware.
- Third-party shell conflict: unsupported shells can lock up or malfunction; TI’s warning is specific and worth taking seriously.
- Insufficient storage or memory: back up first, then remove only files you can safely restore.
- App does not appear: check its file type, destination, signing requirements, and whether the current OS allows that app method.
- Game crashes after launch: possible causes include incompatible game data, memory limits, unsupported rendering features, or a build for a different model.
- Unusable controls or slow display: if remapping is unavailable, the result may be a technical demonstration rather than a practical game.
- Calculator will not boot: follow the port or platform’s recovery instructions. Do not assume a factory reset will repair modified software or use a firmware image for another model.
Students should also check classroom and exam rules before installing custom software. NumWorks explains how to restore official software for examination security in its exam software guidance; requirements vary by institution and jurisdiction.
Is a calculator worth buying just for Doom?
Usually not. A graphing calculator is a sensible purchase if it also meets a school, programming, or hobby need; Doom is best treated as a bonus project. A phone or tablet source port, a handheld gaming device, or a small computer is a much better choice for actually playing the game. If the appeal is the engineering challenge, try a clone or emulator first, then consider a calculator whose community and recovery documentation match your willingness to experiment.
For a current calculator purchase, compare educational features and local availability rather than assuming any new model is a better Doom target. TI directs buyers to retailer availability on its graphing calculator buying page; Casio’s official fx-CG50 Python transfer documentation is here. Neither source promises Doom compatibility.
Bottom line
Some capable graphing calculators have community Doom ports, and NumWorks has a documented Doom-style clone. The exact model, firmware, software, and game data determine what “runs Doom” means; for most people the port itself is more interesting than the calculator’s gaming experience.
