RPCS3 is a PlayStation 3 emulator, and the PS4 is not among the platforms listed by the official project. RPCS3 therefore does not offer standard PS4 installation or official PS4 support. Its compatibility list describes PS3 games tested with RPCS3 on supported host systems—not PS4 games running on a PS4.
Can I run RPCS3 on PS4?
No, not as an officially supported PS4 application. The RPCS3 project lists Windows, Linux, macOS, FreeBSD, and Android as its platforms; it does not list PS4. See the RPCS3 FAQ for the project’s platform description.
That distinction matters: RPCS3 emulates PS3 software on supported host systems. It is not a PS4 emulator, and its PS3 compatibility ratings do not indicate that a PS4 can run those games through RPCS3.
What platforms are supported?
The platforms identified by the RPCS3 project are Windows, Linux, macOS, FreeBSD, and Android. A PS4 is not on that list. The project’s download page provides official build information; a download advertised elsewhere as “RPCS3 for PS4” is not evidence of an official PS4 version.

PS4 homebrew, Linux setups, jailbreak-related work, or separate PS4-emulation experiments are different projects or approaches. Their existence does not establish that RPCS3 runs on PS4. A 2017 discussion in the RPCS3 GitHub issue tracker treated PS4 emulation as a distinct undertaking; that old discussion is historical context, not a current status report on every unofficial experiment.
What the RPCS3 compatibility list actually measures
The official compatibility list is for PS3 software. RPCS3 tracks entries by Game ID rather than by a broad title name alone; disc and digital releases can have separate entries. Reports are submitted in the relevant game thread and reviewed before an entry is added. Check the exact release and its linked reports in the RPCS3 Game Compatibility wiki, because matching only the title may not identify the relevant entry.

The latest monthly row shown on the wiki, September 2026, lists 2,809 Playable, 721 Ingame, 31 Intro, 2 Loadable, and 0 Nothing entries, for 3,563 total under the page’s counting method. These are reported PS3 compatibility-list entries, not PS4 titles, a count of all games that will work on every setup, or a performance guarantee. The list’s categories and totals can change as reports and emulator builds evolve.
How to read a compatibility status
- Playable: A favorable signal in the project’s list for that PS3 game entry, not a promise that every user’s hardware and configuration will produce the same result.
- Ingame, Intro, and Loadable: These indicate progressively limited outcomes in the compatibility list; consult the specific entry and its reports rather than treating a status as a blanket verdict for every release.
- Nothing: The label is a category in the list. The September 2026 table reported zero entries in it; that does not mean the list covers PS4 compatibility.
Use the status as evidence about the listed PS3 Game ID, not as a guarantee for a different region, media version, emulator build, or host setup.

Legal basics
Legal rules depend on where you live and what you do with game copies, firmware, encryption keys, or circumvention tools. The RPCS3 FAQ addresses legality and advises obtaining firmware legally from Sony or from one’s own console, but jurisdiction-specific rules cannot be reduced to a universal statement that emulator use, downloading files, firmware acquisition, or circumvention is always legal or always illegal. For a decision with legal consequences, consult the rules that apply in your jurisdiction or seek qualified legal advice.
