Not on an ordinary PS5. As of October 3, 2026, reports described a homebrew project called PP (PS5 Proton) demonstrated on a modified PlayStation 5, with the goal of running Windows games. They also said no public build or code repository was available, so the project did not establish that PS5 owners generally could run PC games.
What is PP (PS5 Proton)?
PP is the name used for a reported homebrew effort to run Windows games directly on a modified PS5. Two reports published on October 3, 2026, described a demonstration, but not a publicly available release. The reports did not establish installation instructions, supported firmware, or a release date.
That distinction matters: a demonstration on a modified console is not an official PS5 feature, nor evidence that the same approach works on an unmodified system. Sony has not been shown to have added Valve’s Proton to PS5 system software.
Does Valve’s Proton work on PS5?
Valve’s Proton is a compatibility tool for Steam games on Linux. Valve’s Proton project documentation says: “Proton is a tool for use with the Steam client which allows games which are exclusive to Windows to run on the Linux operating system.” Valve also documents Proton in the Steam Deck and Linux gaming context. What is known about game compatibility and performance?
The October 3, 2026 reports did not provide a reliable public compatibility list or measured performance results. Without a public build or repository, there is no established basis for naming games that work, estimating frame rates, or comparing the demonstration with a PC or standard PS5. Claims about particular working titles, firmware versions, or performance figures should be treated as unverified unless the project publishes evidence.
How this differs from normal PS5 game support
Sony’s backward-compatibility information says the PS5 plays the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games, while noting exceptions and possible title-specific issues. What should PS5 owners take away?
- If you mean an unmodified console and a supported, straightforward way to play Windows PC games, the reported PP demonstration does not establish that option.
- If you are following console homebrew, treat PP as an early reported project until a public release and verifiable compatibility information are available.
- If your goal is to play Windows games through Proton on handheld Linux hardware, Valve’s Steam Deck documentation is relevant; that is a separate platform and is neither a way to run PP nor a component required by the PS5 project.
