Yes—you can enable PlayStation two-step verification (2SV) with an authenticator app instead of SMS, so 2SV does not require you to choose text-message delivery. PlayStation also supports passkey sign-in. But Sony’s published instructions do not guarantee that every account-creation, verification, or recovery flow in every region can be completed without a phone number.
Which security methods can you use without SMS?
| Method | What PlayStation supports | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| SMS 2SV | PlayStation texts a verification code; setup asks you to enter a mobile number. PlayStation’s 2SV instructions. | Use this if you want codes delivered by text; it links a number for verification. |
| Authenticator-app 2SV | PS5 setup lets you choose an authenticator app, scan a QR code or enter a code, and confirm a generated code. PlayStation’s 2SV instructions. | This avoids SMS as the 2SV delivery method. Save the backup codes in case you lose access to the app or device. |
| Passkey | PlayStation supports passkey sign-in. PS5 setup displays a QR code to scan with a mobile device. PlayStation’s passkey instructions. | A passkey is a separate sign-in method, not SMS-based 2SV. Set it up on a device you can access and plan for recovery if that device is unavailable. |
These options answer the common question “Can I use 2-step verification on PS5 without SMS?”: yes, choose Authenticator App rather than Text Message. That does not establish that Sony never asks for a phone number elsewhere or that every account can be set up or recovered without one. Requirements can depend on the account flow and region.
Set up 2SV with an authenticator app on PS5
- On PS5, go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Security > 2-Step Verification.
- Choose Authenticator App.
- Scan the displayed QR code with an authenticator app, or enter the alphanumeric code in the app.
- Enter the code generated by the app to confirm setup.
- Save the backup codes shown during setup somewhere you can reach if your phone is lost or unavailable.
PlayStation documents Authenticator App and Text Message as the 2SV choices. If you already use SMS and want to switch, Sony says to deactivate and reactivate 2SV, then select the other method. The setup instructions do not describe every account-creation or regional verification flow, so this is not a guarantee of a completely phone-free PlayStation account.
Set up a passkey on PS5
- On PS5, go to Settings > Users & Accounts > Account > Security > Sign in with Passkey.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to create a passkey.
- When the setup flow displays a QR code, scan it with a mobile device and complete the prompts.
You can also sign in to account management, open Security, enable Sign in with Passkey, and create a passkey there. Sony describes a passkey as a password replacement for sign-in; it is not the same feature as SMS or authenticator-app 2SV. The setup instructions do not promise that using a passkey removes every later verification or recovery requirement.

Keep a recovery route for 2SV
PlayStation provides ten 2SV backup codes, and each code can be used once. Record them when enabling 2SV and store them securely somewhere other than the device you rely on for authentication. If you need one on PS5, sign in with your account email and password, then enter a backup code at the 2SV prompt. See PlayStation’s instructions for 2SV problems.
If you have neither your backup codes nor access to the phone or number registered for 2SV, PlayStation directs you to Support to restore account access. If you have a passkey registered on another device, that device may let you sign in and register a new passkey; if you cannot use another device, contact Support. PlayStation’s passkey guidance explains those recovery options.

Protect the account beyond the sign-in method
- Use a unique password rather than reusing one from another service. Sony recommends a password manager or passkey as a way to support good password practices. PlayStation’s security best practices.
- Do not follow suspicious links or scan QR codes sent by other people, including QR codes attached to offers or rewards.
- If you see an unrecognized change to your sign-in ID, online ID, or password, use PlayStation’s account-compromise guidance and contact Support as directed.
No sign-in method makes an account unhackable. Sony’s guidance establishes the available setup and recovery paths, not a universal promise that every account can avoid a phone number under every circumstance.
