In a recent r/gtaonline discussion, one player said the exit did not trigger before their rebreather ran out; replies offered differing route suggestions, while other players said they had escaped by swimming recently. There is no published success rate for swimming out. A failed attempt by itself does not establish that Rockstar removed the method, just as someone else’s success does not guarantee your attempt will work.
What Rockstar’s January 2026 fix means
Rockstar’s Title Update 1.72 notes, dated January 27, 2026, say: “Fixed an issue that resulted in players spawning in the ocean while exiting El Rubio’s compound during The Cayo Perico Heist.” The fix addressed an ocean-spawn bug. It does not say that swimming away was removed, nor does it confirm a specific swim exit or route.

Swimming versus other water-related options
Rockstar’s Cayo Perico tips discuss alternative escape points, scuba equipment and calling a Dinghy through the Interaction Menu if you are stranded in the water. Those are documented options, but the tips do not provide instructions for finishing the finale by swimming to a particular exit trigger.
