Google’s official Stadia Controller conversion changes the firmware from Stadia Wi‑Fi to Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), allowing use with supported computers, Android devices and Steam. However, Google’s published conversion window ended on December 31, 2025. As of September 28, 2026, the available documentation does not confirm whether first-time conversions are still accepted, so do not assume an unconverted controller can be unlocked today.

What “unlocking” a Stadia controller does

The process is a firmware conversion, not an unlock code. It permanently disables the controller’s proprietary Stadia Wi‑Fi functions and enables Bluetooth Low Energy. Google states: “After you enable Bluetooth mode on your Stadia Controller, its Wi-Fi connectivity features will be permanently disabled. You cannot revert this change.” Stadia itself shut down on January 18, 2023, and Google said it would not provide further controller updates after the shutdown.

If your controller was converted before the deadline, you can continue using it as a BLE gamepad. If it was never converted, the official documentation does not establish that Google still accepts new conversions after December 31, 2025.

Requirements for the official conversion

  • A Stadia Controller with enough charge to remain powered during the update.
  • A computer with Google Chrome 108 or later.
  • A USB data cable. A charge-only cable cannot transfer the firmware.
  • On Linux, additional udev rules may be required, as noted by Google.

Use Google’s web tool at stadia.google.com/controller. The computer must be able to communicate with the controller over USB; a Bluetooth adapter is not needed for the conversion itself.

8Bitdo Ultimate 2C Wireless Controller for Windows PC and Android, with 1000 Hz Polling Rate, Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers, and Remappable L4/R4 Bumpers (Green)
  • Compatible with Windows and Android.
  • 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
  • Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
  • Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
  • Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.

How to convert a Stadia controller

  1. Hold the Stadia button until the controller’s status light turns on.
  2. Connect the controller to the computer with the USB data cable.
  3. Open Chrome 108 or later and go to stadia.google.com/controller.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to check the controller and install the Bluetooth-mode firmware, if Google’s tool still offers the conversion.
  5. Leave the controller connected until the page reports that the update has finished. Disconnecting during a firmware update can leave the process incomplete.

Because Google’s stated December 31, 2025 deadline has passed, the page may no longer offer a first-time conversion. The published sources do not provide a later extension or an alternative official method.

Pair a converted controller over Bluetooth

Bluetooth mode uses BLE, so the target computer needs a Bluetooth Low Energy adapter. Compatibility varies by hardware, operating system and service; Google’s platform list is a baseline rather than a guarantee for every game or device.

  • Hall Effect Joysticks: Delivering enhanced recentering performance for smoother control and superior anti-drift capability. Plus, with anti-friction rings.
  • 2-Way Trigger Lock: With trigger stops, gamers can toggle between short and long pull positions. Additionally, gamers can activate hair trigger mode by pressing M+LT/RT (triggers must be in the long pull position).
  • 1000Hz Polling Rate: This ensures that your inputs are registered almost instantaneously, minimizing lag and maximizing your performance during competitive play.
  • Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
  1. Turn on the controller.
  2. Hold Y and the Stadia button together for two seconds.
  3. Release them when the status light flashes orange.
  4. Open the target device’s Bluetooth settings and select the Stadia Controller.

After a successful pairing, the controller should reconnect automatically to the last paired device when it is powered on. To move it to another device, put it back into pairing mode and select it from that device’s Bluetooth list.

Supported platforms and important caveats

Google specifically focused Bluetooth mode on Windows 10 and Windows 11 with Steam, macOS 13 with Steam, ChromeOS and Android. Other combinations may work, but Google cautions that it did not substantially test every service.

  • 8BitDo Exclusive Wireless Technology - “8Speed”, it delivers an exceptionally stable 2.4G connection with ultra-low latency under 1ms. Engineered for rock-solid reliability, it features strong anti-interference and a 10m range with virtually no lag.
  • Trigger Mode Switch - Easily switch between linear Hall Effect triggers and non-linear tactile triggers for optimal control across different gaming scenarios.
  • 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection). Customizable 6-Axis Motion Control. Turbo function. Rumble vibration. Support 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2.
  • 2 Pro back paddle buttons, extra R4/L4 bumpers, and tactile bumpers & D-pad for enhanced control and faster response. Includes a multifunctional charging dock and USB-C adapter for seamless connectivity.
  • No wireless headset audio: In Bluetooth mode, the 3.5 mm headphone jack and USB port cannot provide pass-through headphone audio. Wired USB play can support 3.5 mm headphones.
  • Button behavior: Google Assistant and Capture do not work as expected by default in Bluetooth mode. A supported service may let you remap those inputs.
  • BLE limitations: The controller is not a universal replacement for every modern gamepad. Game mapping, vibration and other features depend on the operating system and game.
  • USB remains useful: Keep a data-capable cable for wired play, charging and any future device troubleshooting.

Bluetooth versus USB connection

Consideration Bluetooth mode USB connection
Setup Requires a completed firmware conversion and BLE pairing. Connect with a USB data cable; no Bluetooth adapter is required.
Wireless play Yes, on compatible devices and services. No; the cable remains attached.
Headphones 3.5 mm and USB audio pass-through are unavailable wirelessly. Wired USB use can support 3.5 mm headphones.
Firmware reversibility Conversion permanently removes Stadia Wi‑Fi mode. Using USB does not restore Wi‑Fi mode or undo a conversion.
Best-documented targets Windows 10/11 with Steam, macOS 13 with Steam, ChromeOS and Android. Any device that supports the controller over USB, subject to its own driver and game support.
Deadline concern First-time conversion after December 31, 2025 is not confirmed by the available documentation. USB play does not depend on the Bluetooth-conversion window.

If the controller will not connect

The web tool does not detect it

  • Confirm Chrome is version 108 or later.
  • Replace a charge-only lead with a USB-C data cable.
  • Reconnect the controller directly to the computer rather than through an unpowered hub.
  • On Linux, install or adjust the udev rules referenced in Google’s Help documentation.

Bluetooth pairing fails

  • Verify that the controller was successfully converted; an unconverted unit remains in Stadia Wi‑Fi mode.
  • Check that the device has a Bluetooth Low Energy adapter.
  • Remove an old Stadia Controller entry from the device’s Bluetooth list, then repeat the two-second Y plus Stadia-button pairing sequence.
  • Keep the controller close to the device during pairing and disconnect it from USB if the device is attempting to use a wired connection.

Headphones do not work wirelessly

This is expected in Bluetooth mode. Use a wired USB connection when you need the controller’s 3.5 mm audio path.

What to check before buying an unconverted used controller

Ask the seller whether Bluetooth mode was enabled and request a pairing demonstration if possible. An unconverted unit may no longer be eligible for Google’s official conversion because the published deadline was December 31, 2025, and no later extension is established. A converted unit is the safer choice for wireless use, while either unit can still be useful with a USB data cable if the host device supports wired gamepads.
