Yes—but not directly. A PS3 DualShock 3 or Sixaxis will not work when plugged into a PS2 controller port on its own. You need an adapter made to convert PS3 controller input for a PS2 console; Brook’s Wingman PS2 is the clearest documented option.
What you need
- A PS2 console and a free controller port.
- A DualShock 3, Sixaxis, or another controller confirmed on the adapter’s compatibility list.
- A PS2-compatible controller adapter. Check that it explicitly supports PS3 controllers as input and PS2 consoles as output; many PS2-to-USB adapters are designed for the opposite direction.
- A compatible USB cable for initial registration or troubleshooting. Charge the controller separately if needed; do not assume the adapter charges it.
Best documented option: Brook Wingman PS2
Brook’s Wingman PS2 is designed for PS2, original PlayStation, PlayStation Classic, and PC. Brook lists PS3 controllers among the wireless controllers it supports. The small converter plugs into a PS2 controller port and handles the protocol conversion; the console itself does not gain native Bluetooth or general USB-controller support.
Brook also lists controller remapping and turbo functions. Its compatibility FAQ cautions that a controller absent from its tested list may be incompatible or simply untested. A genuine Sony DualShock 3 is a safer choice than an unspecified third-party “PS3-compatible” pad, whose pairing method and USB behavior may differ.
Adapter firmware matters for compatibility. Brook’s download page showed Wingman PS2 firmware V1.2.7.7 dated December 12, 2025; that is a dated release listing, not a claim that it remains the newest version. Check the current firmware page before setup. Brook’s web updater requires Google Chrome and its listed web-update path does not support phones, tablets, Linux, or Ubuntu.

How to connect a PS3 controller to a PS2
- Turn off the PS2 and plug the Wingman PS2 into the controller port you want to use.
- Connect the DualShock 3 to the adapter with a compatible USB cable for first-time registration. Brook’s PS3/PS4-to-PS2 converter documentation describes USB connection for initial setup.
- Turn on the PS2. Use the adapter’s Brook button to enter pairing mode as described in the current instructions. The Wingman PS2 guide describes the pairing procedure; check the current manual for the applicable button and indicator behavior.
- When registration is complete, disconnect the cable if you want wireless play. Later sessions can usually reconnect wirelessly, but pairing behavior can vary.
- Before starting a multiplayer game, assign the adapter to the correct PS2 controller port. Test the D-pad, face buttons, shoulder buttons, sticks, Start, and Select in a game or menu.
If the controller works over USB but not wirelessly, check that pairing mode was entered, the controller is charged, it is not connected to another device, and the controller model is supported. Do not expect Sixaxis motion, the PS button, PS3 headset features, or PS3 menu functions to acquire PS2 uses.
Wired and wireless use
Wired
A USB cable is useful for first-time registration and makes pairing failures easier to diagnose. The adapter’s documentation supports a USB connection during setup; consult its current guide for whether a particular controller can be used continuously over the cable. The PS2 controller port remains the console connection.

Wireless
Brook advertises wireless-controller operation, including PS3 controllers, through the Wingman PS2. The adapter—not the PS2—communicates with the controller. Wireless play avoids a controller cable across the room, but requires a successful pairing and a charged controller.

Standard gamepad input—such as the D-pad, sticks, face buttons, shoulder buttons, Start, and Select—is the intended use. Brook’s product listing confirms PS2 and PS3-controller support, but does not guarantee that every game-specific behavior will be reproduced exactly.

Pressure-sensitive buttons
Some PS2 games use the DualShock 2’s pressure-sensitive face buttons for variable actions such as acceleration, braking, attacks, or aiming. Brook’s Wingman PS2 product page does not clearly guarantee DualShock 2-style pressure sensitivity with a PS3 controller. Brook warns about pressure sensitivity for a PS3 controller with a different converter, which is not proof of Wingman PS2 behavior; treat pressure-sensitive games as a compatibility risk and keep a DualShock 2 available if they matter to you.
Vibration and other special features
Vibration depends on the controller, adapter, firmware, and game; it is not safe to assume it works in every setup. Likewise, the PS2 has no native use for the PS3 controller’s Sixaxis motion, PS button, or headset features, and no conversion for those functions is established here.

Specialty controllers, PS1 games, and multiplayer
Do not assume a standard controller converter supports guitar controllers, dance pads, steering wheels, light guns, multitaps, or other specialty peripherals. PS1 games running on a PS2 may also have their own controller expectations, even though Brook advertises PS compatibility. For multiplayer, plan on an adapter for each PS2 controller port unless the specific product documentation confirms a multi-controller arrangement; the Wingman PS2 is not established as a multi-controller hub.

No response from the PS2
- Try another PS2 controller port and check that the adapter is fully seated.
- Try a different micro-USB cable. Brook also recommends connecting the cable’s other end to a PS2 USB port to provide additional power if the adapter does not respond; this is a troubleshooting measure, not a universal requirement.
- Update the adapter firmware using Brook’s instructions, then reconnect and pair the controller again if necessary.
- Test with a controller that appears on Brook’s compatibility list.
Buttons respond incorrectly
Check whether a remapping profile is active, whether the game expects a standard DualShock 2 layout, and whether analog mode is enabled as required. Third-party PS3 controllers may use a different layout. If only one game behaves incorrectly, consider whether it relies on pressure-sensitive input or a specialty controller feature.

Firmware update does not work
Use the Wingman PS2 update rather than a package for another Wingman model. Brook specifies Chrome for its web updater; its listed web-update route is unavailable on mobile devices, tablets, Linux, and Ubuntu. Do not disconnect the adapter during an update. If it stops recognizing the controller afterward, reconnect and pair again.
Should you use an adapter or buy a DualShock 2?

If you already own a working DualShock 3 and mainly play ordinary gamepad-based titles, the Wingman PS2 is the most directly documented route to using it wirelessly on PS2. If maximum compatibility matters—or you play games that depend on pressure-sensitive controls—a DualShock 2 is the safer choice. Before buying an adapter, verify your exact controller model against Brook’s tested list and confirm current availability.
