No. Sony says not to use a PS5 console without its covers. The warning applies to the covers as a set; Sony does not approve running the console with one or more panels removed. Possible consequences listed in the PS5 Pro covers manual include fire, electric shock, injury, malfunction and overheating. These are manufacturer warnings, not quantified probabilities. Sony’s PS5 Pro Console Covers instruction manual states: “Do not use your PS5 console without the covers.”
Why Sony says to keep the covers on
Sony warns against using the PS5 Pro with its covers removed. Its safety guide also says that covers must be installed correctly before the console is turned on; incorrect installation may cause the main unit to overheat. The manuals do not provide comparative temperature measurements, failure rates or evidence that running the console open improves cooling. Sony’s PS5 Pro CFI-70XX-B30 Safety Guide and the PS5 Pro Console Covers instruction manual describe precautions rather than a tested open-cover operating mode.
Before removing or refitting a cover
- Turn the console off and disconnect it. Unplug the AC power cord and other cables before removing or attaching covers.
- Let it cool. Sony warns that the console may remain hot after use and that continued handling can cause burns. The manuals specify no fixed waiting time, so wait until it is cool to handle.
- Use a stable, soft work surface. Place the console on a flat surface covered with a soft cloth, and take care around edges and clips to avoid pinching or injuring your fingers.
- Match each cover to its position. The covers have different shapes. Use the marks on their insides to identify where each belongs.
- Secure the fit before powering on. Align the cover clips with the corresponding holes on the console and press until the cover clicks into place. Reattach the feet and reconnect the cables before turning the console on.
If a cover is missing or damaged
Restore the covered configuration before using the console. Sony documents a PS5 Pro Console Covers accessory, model CFI-ZCS3. When choosing a replacement, check that the listing explicitly identifies compatibility with PS5 Pro and matches your console’s model family; do not assume that covers for another PS5 model will fit.
