Yes—but don’t type the stream key into the FFmpeg command. FFmpeg documents a slash-prefixed option form that reads an option’s argument from a file. Whether that mechanism works with the specific RTMP or RTMPS option in your installed build must be verified locally. Keep the key file private, and remember that RTMPS protects the connection to YouTube, not your local command history.
Why a stream key needs protection
YouTube describes stream keys as password-like credentials used with a stream URL to authorize an encoder feed. Anyone who obtains a usable key may be able to send a feed to your stream, so treat it as a secret rather than as an ordinary FFmpeg setting. Find the RTMPS URL in YouTube Live Control Room; the URL and the key are separate pieces of configuration.
Use FFmpeg’s file-backed option argument carefully
FFmpeg’s command-line documentation describes a slash-prefixed form for reading an option argument from a file. In principle, this can keep the literal key out of the command text you type. The general documentation does not establish that every FFmpeg release accepts this form for every RTMP or RTMPS option, so don’t assume a universal YouTube command recipe.
- Check your installed FFmpeg. Consult the local FFmpeg manual or help for the exact credential-bearing option and confirm that your build supports file-backed arguments for it.
- Test without a production credential. Verify the syntax and behavior with a disposable key or a safe test setup before relying on it for a live stream.
- Put the real key in a protected file. Restrict access to the file using the facilities available on your operating system. Keep it out of shared directories and source-control repositories.
- Use the file-backed form only for the credential argument. Configure the stream URL and other encoder settings separately, and follow the syntax confirmed for your installed build. Do not paste the real key into an interactive command while testing.
- Check surrounding tools for leaks. If a script or wrapper launches FFmpeg, make sure it does not log the complete argument list or print the key during troubleshooting. File indirection avoids putting the literal in typed command text; it is not a guarantee that the key is hidden from every local observer.
A key stored in a file is still a secret that needs protection. Do not print the file contents, include them in diagnostic output, commit the file, or give unnecessary users access to it.

Shell history and RTMPS protect different things

Use RTMPS for transport security and sound local secret handling for the key. They are complementary, not substitutes.
Keep the rest of the encoder configuration aligned with YouTube
Using a protected key does not ensure that the stream’s technical settings are appropriate. YouTube’s current encoder guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS transport, supported video codecs, frame rates up to 60 fps, a recommended two-second keyframe interval with a four-second maximum, AAC or MP3 audio, and bitrate ranges that vary by codec and resolution. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings for the specific format you intend to send rather than copying a bitrate from a different resolution or codec.

If the key may already have been exposed
If you typed the key into a command that may have been saved, shared it in a log, or otherwise disclosed it, treat it as compromised. YouTube’s guidance is to reset the key in Live Control Room, copy the replacement, and update the encoder configuration. Do not continue streaming with a key you believe may be exposed.
