Yes, but HDMI is the PS4’s only native direct video output. The console has no composite, component, VGA, or other analog video port. To use an older display, you need the correct active converter—or you can avoid a physical video connection with Remote Play. The best choice depends on whether your screen has DVI, VGA, composite, component, or is a computer.
What video outputs does a PS4 have?
All PS4 models send video through HDMI OUT. Sony’s specifications identify HDMI as the console’s AV output, and Sony’s FAQ states that PS4 does not support analog video or audio output: PS4 technical specifications and Sony’s PS4 FAQ.
That means there is no PS3-style AV MULTI OUT, yellow composite jack, or direct component output. Some early promotional tables used confusing “Analog-AV out” wording, but Sony’s explicit FAQ and model documentation are the reliable references.
Some consoles also have DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL), but optical carries audio only. Original PS4 models and PS4 Pro generally include it; the CUH-2000 PS4 Slim does not. Check the model number on the console before buying an optical cable. Sony’s audio instructions are at PS4 audio-output support.

HDMI-to-DVI: usually the cleanest conversion
For a DVI-equipped monitor, connect PS4 HDMI OUT → HDMI-to-DVI adapter or cable → DVI monitor. HDMI and single-link DVI can carry compatible digital video, so this is generally more reliable than an analog conversion.
- Confirm the monitor accepts a PS4 mode such as 720p or 1080p.
- Check HDCP support; an older DVI display may refuse the signal.
- DVI normally has no audio. Use a headset connected to the DualShock 4, an HDMI audio extractor, the display’s separate audio input, or optical audio if your PS4 model has that port.
- This route does not preserve PS4 Pro 4K or HDR features.
HDMI-to-VGA: only an active converter works
HDMI is digital and VGA is analog. A passive cable cannot translate between them. Buy a converter containing electronics, preferably one with external USB power and specifications that explicitly list PS4, 720p/1080p, and your monitor’s required resolution.
VGA carries video only, so plan audio separately. A converter can also fail if the PS4’s HDCP handshake is incompatible, if it outputs an unsupported refresh rate, or if the monitor reports unusual timing. Image quality is below a direct digital connection, and HDR, 4K, and other PS4 Pro features are not retained. A monitor showing “out of range” needs a converter and output mode it can accept.

Composite and component TV connections
Composite (yellow, red, white)
A yellow RCA plug is composite video; red and white are analog audio. The PS4 cannot produce these signals directly. Use a powered HDMI-to-composite converter that supports your television’s video standard (for example, NTSC in the United States). Expect a major resolution reduction, blurred menus, aspect-ratio problems, and possible scaling lag. Protected content may still produce a black screen.
Component (red, green, blue video)
Component is better than composite but remains analog. It also requires an active HDMI-to-component converter, separate audio, compatible resolutions, and suitable HDCP handling. A passive “HDMI-to-RCA” lead is not a solution for either format.
Can optical output replace HDMI?
No—optical replaces only the audio path. On models with the port, select Settings > Sound and Screen > Audio Output Settings > Primary Output Port > DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL). The CUH-2000 PS4 Slim has no optical terminal, so use controller headphones, an HDMI audio extractor, or audio from the display instead. Optical cannot send a picture to any television or monitor.

Using a computer instead of a TV
Remote Play
Remote Play displays and controls the PS4 on a compatible Windows PC, Mac, smartphone, or tablet over a network. It is software streaming, not a second physical video port. On the PS4, open Settings > Remote Play Connection Settings > Enable Remote Play, then install the app and sign in with the PlayStation account linked to the console. The console must be powered on or configured for the relevant Rest Mode behavior. Network quality affects latency and image quality, and some games or peripheral-dependent functions are restricted. Competitive games may feel delayed. If the PS4’s HDMI port is broken and Remote Play was never enabled, you may need temporary access to an HDMI display to configure it.
Capture device
A USB capture device accepts PS4 HDMI, then presents the image to capture software. Most laptops’ HDMI ports are outputs, not inputs, so simply plugging the PS4 into a laptop usually does nothing. Capture hardware is useful for recording or streaming, but it adds cost and possible delay.

HDCP can block capture. For gameplay, Sony allows it to be disabled at Settings > System by clearing Enable HDCP. This does not authorize Blu-ray, DVD, or protected streaming playback; those require HDCP enabled. See Elgato’s PS4 capture guidance and Sony’s HDCP instructions.
Fix a black screen before buying an adapter
- Connect the PS4 directly to the display.
- Try a known-good HDMI cable and a different display input.
- Select the correct input on the display.
- Remove receivers, soundbars, switches, and capture devices from the chain.
- Check audio and video output settings and update system software.
- Start Safe Mode and use the resolution-reset option if the display mode is unsupported.
Sony’s troubleshooting sequence is documented at PS4 picture and sound support. With PS4 Pro, an AV receiver or other intermediate device may need HDCP 2.2 for a 4K chain; Sony recommends a direct connection to a compatible TV when that equipment causes a black screen: Sony’s PS4 Pro receiver guidance.

A display-side adapter cannot bypass a physically damaged console HDMI port. The practical options are professional HDMI-port repair, replacing the console, or Remote Play if it was already configured and remains accessible.
