Yes. You can use PlayStation Portal at a hotel, friend’s house, café, airport, workplace, vacation rental, or through a phone hotspot—provided the available internet connection is compatible and stable enough for game streaming.
There are two ways to play: Remote Play, which streams games from your own PS5, and Cloud Streaming, which runs eligible games on Sony’s servers. Remote Play does not require PlayStation Plus Premium; Cloud Streaming does. Neither mode supports offline play.

How PlayStation Portal works away from home
PlayStation Portal is a streaming device rather than a conventional handheld. It does not download games and run them locally. Instead, it displays a video stream while sending your controller input over the internet.
With Remote Play, the stream comes from your PS5 at home. With Cloud Streaming, the stream comes from Sony’s servers. In either case, the quality of the connection matters more than the physical distance between you and the console or server.

Sony recommends home Wi-Fi because it gives you more control over the network, but home Wi-Fi is not required. Sony lists 5 Mbps as the minimum connection speed and recommends 15 Mbps or faster for a better experience. These figures are not guarantees of smooth gameplay; latency, jitter, packet loss, congestion, upload performance, and firewall restrictions also matter. Sony’s Portal requirements provide the official baseline.
Remote Play away from home
Remote Play is the simplest option if you own a PS5 and want to access games installed on it. Your PS5 can remain at home while you use Portal somewhere else.
Before leaving, the PS5 must be:
- Connected to the internet.
- Paired with your Portal.
- Configured with Remote Play enabled.
- Powered on or in Rest Mode—not fully shut down.
- Signed in with the same PlayStation account used on Portal.
If the PS5 is in Rest Mode, it must be allowed to stay online and wake over the network. Remote Play also requires the game to be installed on the PS5 and compatible with Remote Play. Games requiring PlayStation VR, PS VR2, or certain additional peripherals may not work. See the official Portal troubleshooting guidance and compatibility information from PlayStation Direct.
Remote Play uses two internet connections
Remote Play depends on both the connection where you are using Portal and the connection at home. A fast hotel network cannot compensate for weak or unstable upload performance at your home. Similarly, a well-configured PS5 cannot overcome congested or restricted public Wi-Fi.
Sony recommends connecting the PS5 to the router with Ethernet where possible and reducing other traffic on the home network.

Cloud Streaming away from home
Cloud Streaming is useful when your PS5 is switched off, unavailable, being used by someone else, or unable to accept a Remote Play connection. Sony launched Cloud Streaming on Portal on November 5, 2025. The game runs on Sony’s servers, so your home PS5 is not needed.
Cloud Streaming on Portal requires:
- An active PlayStation Plus Premium membership.
- An adult PlayStation account; child accounts are not supported.
- A supported country or region.
- An eligible PS5 game.
- A broadband internet connection.
Sony lists 5 Mbps to establish a session, 7 Mbps for 720p, and 13 Mbps for 1080p. Resolution can adjust according to connection quality, so 1080p is a maximum setting rather than a promise that every session will be delivered at that resolution. The complete requirements and limitations are listed on Sony’s Cloud Streaming support page.
Cloud Streaming does not include every game you own. It supports selected titles from the Premium catalog and selected digital PS5 games in your library, with availability varying by region, title, and time. Under Sony’s stated limitations, PS4 and PS3 games are not currently included in Portal Cloud Streaming. Some functions, including broadcasting, Share Screen, Share Play, and certain messaging or social features, are unavailable while streaming.
Can someone else use the PS5?
Cloud Streaming allows the PS5 to be powered off or used by another account because the game is running in the cloud. Remote Play is different: Portal is using the PS5’s resources, so another person’s use of the console can interfere with or prevent your session.

Choose Remote Play if you want the broadest access to your installed compatible games and your home PS5 will remain online. Choose Cloud Streaming if you have Premium, the game is eligible, and you do not want to depend on the PS5 being available.

PlayStation Plus Premium is not required merely because you are using Portal outside your home. Separate PlayStation Plus rules still apply to online multiplayer: most purchased games require a qualifying plan, while many free-to-play games do not. Will Portal work on hotel, café, and airport Wi-Fi?
Often, but not universally. Portal software version 3.0.0 added support for public networks such as hotels, cafés, and airports. Portal can use a phone or computer to complete additional validation, such as entering an ID, password, or room number. Version 3.0.1 and later expanded support to a wider range of public networks, including certain 5 GHz configurations. Sony documents these changes on its Portal system software page.
A public network may still fail because it:
- Uses a captive portal that Portal cannot complete.
- Requires device registration, terms acceptance, a room number, or a browser.
- Blocks gaming, peer-to-peer, or required streaming traffic.
- Has high congestion, packet loss, or unstable Wi-Fi.
- Uses a restricted 5 GHz setup or other network policy incompatible with Portal.
A hotel’s advertised speed is therefore only part of the story. Try the venue’s alternate network or Wi-Fi band, ask staff whether they can register the device, or use a personal hotspot or travel router if permitted.
Can you use a phone hotspot?
Possibly. A phone hotspot presents itself as Wi-Fi and can give Portal an internet connection, but hotspot performance varies by carrier, phone, signal, and location. Sony does not guarantee every cellular provider or hotspot configuration.
Common problems include cellular congestion, weak signal, changing tower connections, high latency, jitter, restrictive carrier NAT or firewall policies, data caps, battery drain, and phone overheating. A hotspot may work well enough for Cloud Streaming or less timing-sensitive games in favorable conditions, but it is not automatically equivalent to reliable broadband.

If you plan to rely on a hotspot, test the exact phone and carrier before traveling. Remember that Remote Play still depends on the home PS5’s internet connection as well.

- Update Portal. On Portal, swipe left from the upper-right corner, then select Settings > System > System Software > Update System Software. Sony’s US support documentation listed version 7.0.0 as its latest feature-release entry in the supplied research, but software versions can change; check the live update page before departure.
- Enable Remote Play on PS5. Go to Settings > System > Remote Play and select Enable Remote Play. Confirm that the intended user can use it.
- Configure Rest Mode. Go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
- Pair Portal at home. Complete the initial setup while connected to your home Wi-Fi before attempting to use public networks.
- Test from another network. As a practical precaution, connect Portal to a phone hotspot or another Wi-Fi network before the trip. This can expose pairing, account, router, and Rest Mode problems while you are still able to fix them.
How to connect away from home
- Open Portal’s network settings.
- Select the hotel, café, friend’s, workplace, or hotspot network.
- Enter the Wi-Fi password.
- Complete any additional validation using the phone or computer workflow shown by Portal.
- For Remote Play, start Remote Play and select the paired PS5.
- For Cloud Streaming, open the Cloud Streaming section, select an eligible game, and choose Stream.
What to do when Portal will not connect
Portal cannot join the Wi-Fi network
- Confirm the password and try the venue’s guest network or alternate band.
- Update Portal before traveling.
- Complete any required device registration or captive-portal validation.
- Ask the hotel or venue whether the device can be registered.
- Try a personal hotspot or permitted travel router.
Wi-Fi works, but Portal cannot find the PS5
- Confirm the PS5 is powered on or in Rest Mode.
- Verify that Remote Play is enabled.
- Check that Rest Mode allows internet access and network wake-up.
- Confirm the PS5 is online and both devices use the same PlayStation account.
- Use Ethernet for the PS5 if possible.
- Check whether the home router or ISP blocks the connection.
The game launches but lags or disconnects
- Move closer to the away-from-home access point.
- Reduce other traffic on the local Wi-Fi.
- Try 5 GHz if it is stable and supported.
- Connect the PS5 by Ethernet and reduce competing home traffic.
- For Cloud Streaming, reduce the maximum resolution to 720p.
- Open Quick Menu > Troubleshoot > Show Network Status.
- Retry later if the public network is congested.
Cloud Streaming is unavailable
Check that you have Premium, an adult account, a supported region, and an eligible PS5 title. A game being owned digitally does not automatically make it cloud-streamable.
Public Wi-Fi login fails
The captive portal may be unsupported or the network may block gaming traffic. Try another venue network, ask staff about device registration, use a hotspot if practical, or switch between Remote Play and Cloud Streaming. A network that blocks one mode may not necessarily block the other, but neither mode is guaranteed to work on a restrictive network.
Is PlayStation Portal good for travel?
Portal is a strong travel device for someone who already owns a PS5, has dependable internet access away from home, and accepts the latency and reliability limits of streaming. Remote Play gives access to compatible games installed on the PS5 without requiring Premium. Premium adds Cloud Streaming when the PS5 is unavailable, but only for eligible titles.

The free PS Remote Play app is a useful lower-cost way to test how your home and mobile networks perform before buying dedicated Portal hardware.
For shared rooms or flights, remember that Portal supports PlayStation Link wireless audio devices, such as PULSE Explore earbuds and the PULSE Elite headset. Ordinary Bluetooth audio devices cannot wirelessly connect to Portal, although wired audio through its 3.5mm jack remains an option.
