OBS supports WebM files as local media, and its VLC Video source can play a playlist of them. Install VLC that matches your OBS architecture, add the files to the VLC Video source, and preview playback and audio before going live. OBS decodes those files and creates the outgoing stream; YouTube’s ingest protocol and codec settings are a separate matter.
Use VLC Video for a playlist of WebM files
OBS lists .webm among the video formats supported by its Media Source. Media Source is intended for a single local file; for a multi-file playlist, use VLC Video. OBS documents VLC Video for Windows, macOS, and Linux, subject to having VLC installed. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation.
- Install VLC. Match VLC’s architecture to OBS. OBS specifically says that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Add the source. In the OBS scene, use the Sources panel’s add control and choose VLC Video. If that source type is missing, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS; restart OBS after installing VLC.
- Build the playlist. Add the WebM files to the source’s playlist. Arrange them in the intended order.
- Choose playback behavior. Enable playlist looping if the program should repeat after the last file. Shuffle is configurable and defaults off; leave it off when the files need to play in a set sequence.
- Preview before broadcast. Start playback in OBS and confirm the picture, transitions between files, and audio. File-type support does not guarantee that every WebM codec combination, audio track, damaged file, or system configuration will work.
The VLC Video source also exposes settings such as network caching, audio track, subtitles, and visibility behavior. Adjust them only when your files or scene need them; the essential setup is an installed VLC dependency and a playlist that plays correctly in preview.
Keep the playlist format separate from YouTube’s live input
Your WebM files are local inputs to OBS, not the format YouTube necessarily receives. OBS decodes the playlist and encodes its outgoing live stream. Configure that output for the ingest protocol selected for your YouTube stream. YouTube’s live encoder settings describe the supported protocols and codecs; for ordinary RTMP ingest, YouTube lists H.264. Other protocols have their own options and requirements. Check the current settings in YouTube and OBS rather than inferring the outgoing format from the source files.

Check these points if playback or setup fails
- VLC Video does not appear: Install VLC and make sure its architecture matches OBS. For 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC, as specified in the OBS documentation.
- A file appears but will not play properly: WebM is a supported file type, not a guarantee for every encoding or file. Try each item in the OBS preview and check the file itself and its audio tracks.
- The playlist stops at the end: Check the VLC Video source’s loop-playlist setting.
- Files play in an unexpected order: Check the playlist order and turn off shuffle for a scheduled sequence.
- OBS preview works but YouTube does not accept the stream: Review the selected YouTube ingest protocol and OBS’s matching output settings. The local WebM container does not determine the live ingest protocol or codec.
