Usually, a missing keyframe-interval control does not by itself prevent YouTube from accepting an RTMP stream. What matters is the stream your encoder actually sends. YouTube recommends a keyframe every 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds; its stream-health guidance flags GOPs longer than 4 seconds and open GOPs. Start the stream and check Live Control Room for those warnings.
Does YouTube require a visible keyframe setting?
YouTube’s published encoder guidance specifies recommended output, not a requirement that every encoder expose a particular setting in its interface. If your encoder hides the control, uses a preset, or manages keyframes automatically, the absent control alone does not show whether the outgoing stream meets YouTube’s guidance—or whether YouTube will accept it.
For RTMP and RTMPS, YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. These are published encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that a stream with a particular interface setting will pass or fail. YouTube’s Live Streaming API also describes health issues for GOPs longer than 4 seconds and for open GOPs.
What to check in Live Control Room
- Use the encoder’s YouTube or streaming preset, if one is available, and configure the YouTube stream URL and stream key in the encoder. The stream key and address direct the encoder’s feed to YouTube.
- Start the encoder and open the stream preview in Live Control Room. Check stream health for GOP-size or open-GOP warnings.
- If there is a warning, inspect the encoder’s documentation. The relevant option may be called keyframe interval, GOP length, or closed GOP; names and menus vary by encoder and version.
- Aim for a 2-second keyframe frequency and no more than 4 seconds. If your encoder exposes output diagnostics, use them to verify the stream it sends. YouTube’s recommendation does not certify the output of a specific encoder.
How to interpret GOP warnings
GOP longer than 4 seconds
YouTube’s API health documentation identifies gopSizeLong when keyframes are not sent often enough and advises a frequency of four seconds or less. Shorten the interval in the encoder if it allows you to do so.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Open GOP
YouTube’s API also identifies an openGop health issue and directs the encoder to use a closed GOP. If this warning appears, look for a closed-GOP option in the encoder’s settings or documentation.
Very short GOP
The API lists a separate short-GOP status and notes that a very small GOP can reduce image quality. Avoid treating “shorter” as automatically better; follow YouTube’s recommended 2-second frequency and use Live Control Room feedback to diagnose the actual output.

When to change encoders
If the stream has no GOP-related health warning, the missing setting alone is not a reason to replace your encoder. If YouTube reports a GOP problem and your encoder offers no way to adjust or verify its output, consult the encoder maker’s documentation or use an encoder that can produce the recommended keyframe frequency and a closed GOP. YouTube’s published guidance does not identify a specific encoder brand as necessary.
