Yes—but YouTube Live does not take an uploaded video file and play it as a broadcast by itself. To stream a prerecorded HDR video continuously, a live encoder or playback service must feed it to YouTube as a live stream. The signal must meet YouTube’s HDR ingest requirements: HEVC/H.265 video at 10-bit with compatible BT.2020 color primaries and matching PQ or HLG transfer characteristics.
What “playing an HDR file live” actually means
A YouTube upload and a YouTube Live broadcast use different workflows. Uploading an HDR file makes it an on-demand video. For a live broadcast, software or hardware must play the file, encode a live output, and send that output to YouTube over a supported ingest protocol. YouTube’s documentation describes the live ingest requirements, but does not give one universal procedure for looping a file continuously.
The playback or encoder setup therefore has two jobs: loop the source file, if continuous playback is needed, and preserve or create a YouTube-compatible HDR live signal. Whether a particular program can do both depends on that program and the hardware it uses.
HDR requirements for YouTube Live
YouTube Help says that HDR streaming to YouTube is currently supported with the H.265 (HEVC) video codec. A file being 10-bit—or labelled HDR—does not by itself ensure the live output will be recognized as HDR. The stream also needs suitable color metadata.

- Video codec: HEVC/H.265.
- Bit depth and format: 10-bit output; YouTube’s OBS guidance specifies P010 (4:2:0) and a hardware HEVC encoder.
- Color primaries: BT.2020.
- Transfer characteristics: ST 2084 PQ or HLG, matching the source.
For the OBS workflow documented by YouTube, enable HDR and select Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG along with the supported hardware HEVC encoder and P010 format. YouTube recommends HLG in those instructions, but the transfer characteristic must match the source; choosing HLG for PQ footage, or vice versa, can misrepresent its appearance. Available options vary with the encoder, device, and software version. See YouTube’s HDR streaming guidance.
Choose RTMP(S) or HLS
YouTube documents both RTMP(S) and HLS for HDR ingestion. Use the protocol your encoder supports with the required HDR settings; HLS is an option when the encoder cannot send the relevant HDR configuration over RTMP(S). HLS sends video in segments, so YouTube says it has higher latency than RTMP. That difference matters if viewers need to follow events close to real time, but not usually for a prerecorded continuous stream where lower delay is not essential.

For HLS HDR, YouTube specifies 1–4 second TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no encryption other than HTTPS. Use the appropriate HLS stream key and leave manual resolution disabled for HDR, as YouTube instructs. These are encoder or ingest configuration requirements, not settings for an ordinary file upload. Details are in YouTube’s HLS setup guidance and HDR streaming guidance.
Set up a continuous prerecorded HDR stream
- Check the source. Confirm it is genuinely HDR and find out whether it uses PQ or HLG. Check that its HDR metadata is intact; a 10-bit file without the right color characteristics is not sufficient.
- Choose a playback and encoder workflow. It must be able to use the file as a live source, loop it as needed, and produce HEVC 10-bit HDR output. Confirm that the exact encoder and hardware support the required profile and color settings before building the full stream.
- Configure the HDR signal. Set BT.2020 color primaries and the source-matching PQ or HLG transfer characteristic. For YouTube’s documented OBS setup, use a hardware HEVC encoder, Main 10 profile, P010 color format, and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG. Labels and availability can differ by encoder.
- Select an ingest protocol. Send HDR over RTMP(S) if your encoder supports YouTube’s relevant HDR capabilities there. Otherwise, configure HLS according to YouTube’s segment, playlist, transport, stream-key, and resolution instructions.
- Set general live parameters. YouTube recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no more than 4 seconds apart. Choose the bitrate for the actual output resolution and frame rate using YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance; there is no single bitrate appropriate to every HDR stream.
- Test the entire loop and output. Verify that playback repeats without a gap or stoppage and that the encoder continues sending the intended HDR signal. The file-loop controls are specific to the software or hardware you choose; YouTube’s live documentation does not guarantee a particular loop method.
YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers. The stream you send still needs to meet its live ingest requirements; do not assume that an upload codec listed for HDR video is automatically valid for HDR live streaming.

What viewers will see—and how to check
On supported devices, YouTube displays HDR automatically. Its listed examples include HDR TVs using the YouTube app, Chromecast Ultra connected to an HDR TV, Android devices with HDR displays, and computers with HDR graphics and displays when HDR is enabled in Windows or macOS. Other devices receive SDR.
The Live Control Room preview does not show HDR colors, so it is not a reliable way to judge the final HDR appearance. On a compatible playback device, viewers can check for an HDR indicator in the video quality menu. A normal-looking preview alone does not establish that the live signal is wrong—or that it is correct.

HDR live streaming is not the same as uploading an HDR video
YouTube’s separate HDR upload guidance lists MOV, MP4, and MKV as tested containers, and recommends upload codecs including VP9 Profile 2, AV1, and HEVC. It also calls for correct transfer-function, color-primary, and matrix metadata in the uploaded file. Those are upload recommendations, not a list of HDR live-ingest codecs. For a live HDR stream, follow the live-specific HEVC, 10-bit, color, and protocol requirements instead. See YouTube’s HDR upload guidance.
Common problems and fixes
- The source is 10-bit but YouTube does not show HDR. Check the live encoder’s output, not just the file properties. Confirm HEVC, 10-bit output, BT.2020 primaries, and the correct PQ or HLG transfer characteristics.
- The picture looks washed out or incorrectly toned. Check for a mismatch between the source’s PQ/HLG format and the encoder’s selected transfer characteristic. Make sure the color metadata is preserved through playback and encoding.
- The encoder cannot send HDR using RTMP(S). Check whether it supports YouTube HDR over HLS, then configure HLS as documented. Expect more delay because HLS sends segments.
- The preview does not look like HDR. Live Control Room preview does not display HDR colors. Check the stream on a supported HDR playback device and look for the HDR indicator in the quality menu.
- The live stream stops instead of repeating the video. Confirm that the playback software or hardware has a loop option and is configured to keep the source active. YouTube’s ingest guidance does not control or guarantee file-loop behavior.
- A recommended upload format is rejected or behaves differently live. Upload-format support and live-ingest support are separate. Use the live-specific codec, signal, and protocol instructions.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel built from prerecorded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos, not a camera feed. Nothing has to stay on at home; it supports any quality up to 4K 60fps as uploaded at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Confirm your HDR file and output requirements for your workflow before relying on a cloud playback service for HDR—the general StreamNeo product details here do not establish separate HDR encoder settings.
