YouTube’s published membership rules do not identify a livestream’s uptime as a condition of recurring membership billing. A stream going offline by itself therefore does not mean channel memberships stop. But this is not a guarantee that every outage is harmless: memberships can be paused, switched off, or lost if the channel loses access to the feature. Live-stream ad revenue is separate and may stop while the stream is unavailable.
Why a stream outage does not automatically stop membership billing
YouTube channel memberships are recurring monthly payments for channel perks, such as badges and emoji. They are attached to the channel’s membership feature and a member’s subscription—not to each minute a particular livestream is online. YouTube’s published rules do not list stream uptime as a membership billing condition.
That distinction means a channel’s stream can be offline while its membership feature and members’ paid subscriptions remain active. Membership billing generally follows a monthly cycle; YouTube describes billing periods as 28, 30, or 31 days depending on the calendar month. Those cycle lengths are not a promise about how any particular outage will be handled.
What can pause or end membership revenue
Stream status is not the only factor that matters. YouTube documents channel and membership states that can interrupt billing or perk access:

- Memberships enter paused mode: member billing, the billing cycle, and access to perks are paused, and the channel cannot monetize with memberships or deliver perks during that state.
- The creator turns memberships off: members’ recurring payments are canceled. If memberships are enabled again, viewers must choose to join again.
- The channel terminates or loses access to memberships: recurring payments and perk access end immediately.
- A member cancels: the member is not charged again, but generally keeps access to the badge and creator perks until the current billing period ends.
So the careful answer is that YouTube’s published rules do not make an individual stream’s uptime a billing condition; they do not promise that every outage, however long or frequent, is immune from other platform or channel effects.
Membership revenue and livestream ad revenue are different

Do not treat continued membership billing as evidence that ads were served, or infer ad earnings from the stream’s online status alone. YouTube lists memberships and ads as distinct monetization options, and ad delivery is not guaranteed.

How to check your channel’s membership status and revenue
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Earn → Memberships. Review the membership status and the Memberships tab’s counts, cancellations, and billing-period revenue.
- Interpret “total members” carefully. YouTube’s total-member count can include canceled members who still have access through the end of their paid billing period. “Active members” excludes canceled members.
- Check Analytics → Revenue. The Transactions Revenue card can show membership transactions, including new sign-ups and recurrences. Use the transaction data to distinguish recurring activity from a headline member count.
- Check the channel’s feature state if billing or perks appear interrupted. Confirm whether memberships are paused, turned off, or unavailable to the channel; those states matter more directly to memberships than an individual stream’s online/offline indicator.
What the published revenue share does—and does not—tell you
YouTube’s membership guidance states that creators receive 70% of membership revenue after applicable taxes and fees are deducted. This is YouTube’s published share, not a prediction of a particular creator’s net earnings. The amount received can depend on applicable taxes and fees, and a continuing membership payment does not establish that a live-stream ad was served.
