If you can’t find or add someone on Steam, first confirm you have the right profile using Steam Community search, a profile link, or a Quick Invite. If the request still will not go through, check account restrictions, pending invitations, blocks you control, and friend-list capacity. Steam does not reveal whether another person has blocked you.
Find the right Steam profile
Steam supports adding someone from Community search, a shared Quick Invite link, or the person’s profile. If you locate a profile directly, verify that it belongs to your friend before selecting Add Friend; similar names can lead to the wrong account.
- Community search: Search for the person and check the profile details or avatar with them before sending a request.
- Profile link: Ask your friend to share their Steam profile URL, open it, and select Add Friend.
- Quick Invite: Ask them to create and share a Quick Invite link, then open that link to send an invitation.

Can’t send a friend request? Check account limits
Your account may be limited
Limited accounts cannot send friend invitations. They can accept a request from an eligible, non-limited user, and Steam also documents Quick Invite links as an alternative. If your account is limited, ask your friend to send the request or try a Quick Invite.

Steam says qualifying purchases totaling at least $5 USD remove limited-account restrictions, but that figure alone does not guarantee that a particular purchase qualifies. Check Steam’s Limited User Accounts page for the current purchase rules and exclusions.
One of you may have reached the friend-list limit
A full friend list can prevent invitations from being sent or received. Steam’s current FAQ lists 250 as the initial maximum and says each Steam profile level adds five more slots, so the maximum depends on profile level. Invitations you have sent but that are still outstanding count toward your own limit; cancelling old requests can free a slot.
Check whether the request reached your friend
Steam recommends asking the recipient whether the request appears as pending in their friends list and confirming that you sent it to the intended account. The cited FAQ does not provide a delivery-time guarantee, so do not assume that waiting a particular length of time will resolve a missing request.
Review blocks you control
If you blocked the person by mistake, you can undo that block in Steam. Steam’s documented routes are:

- Friends & Chat: Find the blocked person in the list, right-click their name, then choose Manage > Unblock All Communication.
- Profile: Go to Profile > Friends > Blocked > Manage Blocked List, select the person, and choose Unblock.
If you suspect the other person blocked you, Steam Support says: “Steam Support will not bypass friend blocks or disclose if someone else blocked you.” There is no Steam Support process to override another user’s block.

Steam’s status options describe presence, not a confirmed solution to profile search or invitations. Invisible makes you appear offline while you can still view your friends list and use chat. Offline signs you out of the Steam community, while Do Not Disturb controls notifications. Steam’s Friends & Chat FAQ does not say that changing status makes a profile searchable or fixes a friend request.

Fast troubleshooting order
- Confirm the account using Community search or ask for a profile link.
- Send a request from the profile, or try a Quick Invite link.
- If you cannot send the request, check whether your account is limited; have an eligible friend send the request if needed.
- Ask the recipient to check their pending invitations and verify that the request went to the correct account.
- Check your own blocked list and remove a mistaken block.
- If invitations still fail, check both players’ friend-list capacity and cancel old outstanding requests you sent if necessary.
