In Mike Flanagan’s adaptation of Stephen King’s 1974 novel Carrie, Carrie White and her mother Margaret love each other—but that does not make their relationship healthy or safe. The series gives their bond more room and dimension while showing how Margaret’s fundamentalist beliefs and harmful actions still drive them apart.
How this Carrie changes the mother-daughter dynamic
Summer H. Howell plays Carrie White, with Samantha Sloyan as Margaret. In an interview with GamesRadar+, Sloyan recalled Mike Flanagan’s direction: “He’s like, this isn’t the Margaret White that you recognize. They love each other.”
That framing distinguishes this Margaret from the familiar portrayals without excusing her conduct. The affection between mother and daughter exists alongside Margaret’s beliefs and behavior, which continue to cause harm and distance. The interview presents that tension as part of the adaptation’s dramatic approach, not as evidence that love makes the relationship safe.
What drew Summer H. Howell to Carrie
Howell said she was not really familiar with Carrie before joining the project, despite having worked in horror since childhood. Reading Flanagan’s scripts—and seeing “the humanity that Mike writes into these characters”—made her want to play Carrie. That is Howell’s account of what appealed to her in this version, rather than a claim that it is objectively better than earlier adaptations.

Why the eight-episode format matters
Sloyan said the longer format gave the production more room to explore Margaret. She also described her real connection with Howell as something that informed the performers’ portrayal of the characters’ connection. The series’ first season has eight episodes, according to GamesRadar+.

Stephen King’s reported reaction
GamesRadar+ also reported Stephen King’s response on Threads: “Mike Flanagan’s version of CARRIE is brilliant. What it has to say about social media is shocking and true.” The feature does not provide a date or link to the original post, so this is best understood as the publication’s report of King’s reaction.
