The Bears had not officially named their starter in their own update that day: it said either Bagent or Keenum would replace the injured Caleb Williams.
Who is expected to start for the Bears against the Jets?
NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported that Bagent took most of Chicago’s first-team practice reps that week and was expected to start Sunday. Rapoport’s comments appeared in Grant Gordon’s NFL.com report published October 2, 2026.
That was a reported expectation, not an official decision. The Bears’ October 2 injury update said the team had not named its starter and that Bagent or Keenum would start in Williams’ place. The decision could still change before kickoff.
Why is Case Keenum in the quarterback decision?
Caleb Williams was ruled out of Chicago’s Week 3 game against Philadelphia with a hamstring injury. Bagent had suffered a concussion while replacing Williams against Minnesota and was not cleared from concussion protocol until the day before the Eagles game, according to the Bears team report. Keenum started instead and helped Chicago win 27–7.

Keenum passed for 247 yards and accounted for three touchdowns in that game: two passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown, as reported by NFL Network. The Bears’ account of the game also records 247 passing yards and three total touchdowns.

The depth-chart comparison reflects the Bears’ chart dated September 8, 2026, which listed Williams first, Bagent second and Keenum third; it does not establish the Week 4 starter. The Bears depth chart is background to the decision, while the injury update is the team’s current-week status.

What did Keenum say about the quarterbacks’ preparation?
Keenum described the quarterbacks’ joint preparation to Larry Mayer, senior writer for the Bears: “It’s a group effort. We go in and prepare like a team of quarterbacks every week. We watch film together. We see it the same way. We talk through it. We quiz each other.” His comments were published in the Bears’ team report.
