CastAR reportedly shut down on or around June 26, 2017, after failing to secure additional investment. About 70 employees were reportedly laid off, the company’s internal game studio Eat Sleep Play was closed, and a small remaining team was left to handle or sell the technology. The available reporting describes a financing failure—not a formally documented bankruptcy or proof that CastAR’s underlying technology was impossible.
What happened to CastAR?
CastAR was an augmented-reality gaming startup founded in 2013 by former Valve employees Jeri Ellsworth and Rick Johnson. According to contemporaneous reports citing former employees, staff learned at a meeting around June 26, 2017, that the company was shutting down.
Nearly 70 employees across CastAR’s Palo Alto headquarters and Salt Lake City operation were reportedly dismissed. Eat Sleep Play, CastAR’s internal game-development studio, was also closed. A small core team reportedly remained to manage the company’s assets and try to sell its technology.

Why did CastAR close?
The reported sequence was straightforward:
- CastAR needed more capital to finish development and reach a commercial launch.
- Playground Global, its principal or lead financial backer, reportedly stopped providing further funding.
- The company failed to secure the expected new financing round or another investor.
- With its funding running out, CastAR laid off most of its staff and began winding down.
SiliconANGLE and other outlets described the immediate cause as an unsuccessful attempt to raise additional money. The reviewed sources do not establish CastAR’s exact cash reserves, burn rate, a formal insolvency process, or one specific engineering defect that caused the closure.
That distinction matters. The evidence supports describing CastAR’s shutdown as a funding failure. It does not support saying that CastAR filed for bankruptcy or that its core technology was proven unworkable.
What was CastAR?
Originally called Technical Illusions, CastAR grew out of experimental augmented-reality work associated with Valve. Valve reportedly allowed Ellsworth and Johnson to take the project with them when they left.
CastAR’s system was not simply a conventional pair of see-through AR glasses. It was designed as a shared, tabletop-oriented platform built around several components:

- Tracking cameras and related tracking hardware.
- A retroreflective surface or mat designed for the system.
- A handheld controller.
- Stereoscopic projected imagery intended to appear above a physical play surface.
- Games designed for multiplayer and tabletop interaction.
The approach aimed to make augmented-reality gaming social and shared. Instead of placing each player in an isolated headset experience, CastAR wanted several people to gather around the same surface and see interactive virtual objects integrated into the play space.
That design was distinctive, but it also meant CastAR was building an entire hardware ecosystem: glasses, tracking, a special surface, controllers, software, manufacturing processes, and a library of games.
From Kickstarter to venture funding
CastAR attracted attention because it combined a striking demonstration with founders who had technical credibility from Valve. Its Kickstarter campaign reportedly raised more than $1 million against a $400,000 goal.

Reports also said CastAR returned its Kickstarter money to backers after obtaining outside investment and changing its development and financing plans. That means the 2017 closure was not necessarily a case of Kickstarter supporters simply losing the campaign funds. It also does not mean that every backer received the final promised consumer product.
What product was CastAR trying to ship?
CastAR’s planned product was a complete platform rather than a standalone gadget. The glasses projected images toward a prepared retroreflective surface, while tracking hardware monitored the experience and a controller provided input.
The result was intended to create a holographic-like, stereoscopic gaming view over a physical table or mat. A controlled surface could make the image and tracking experience more predictable and could support shared multiplayer play. However, it also meant consumers needed special equipment and could not use the experience anywhere they happened to be.

CastAR had prototypes and early designs, but the planned commercial-scale product was not completed and broadly launched before the company closed. The company’s website reportedly still advertised a 2017 launch when the shutdown news broke, underscoring the gap between the public schedule and the company’s financial reality.

What happened to Eat Sleep Play and CastAR’s employees?
Eat Sleep Play was CastAR’s internal content studio. Its developers included people with experience connected to Disney Infinity and other game projects. The studio’s closure showed that CastAR was attempting to solve both sides of a platform problem at once: it needed to manufacture new hardware and create software compelling enough to justify buying it.
About 70 employees were reportedly laid off, although contemporaneous reports varied between “around 70,” “just under 70,” and “nearly 70.” A small remaining group was reportedly tasked with handling the company’s technology and seeking a sale or other disposition of its assets.
The sources reviewed for the shutdown do not establish a later owner for all of CastAR’s intellectual property or provide a complete account of every employee’s subsequent destination.
Why hardware startups can fail after raising millions
CastAR’s reported collapse illustrates the financing risk of ambitious gaming hardware. The company had to fund several expensive and interdependent efforts:

- Consumer education for a new product category.
- A developer ecosystem and a path to retail-scale production.
A compelling prototype can attract attention and investment without proving that the same experience can be manufactured affordably, supported reliably, and sold to enough customers. Delays create additional pressure: a company may need more funding before launch, while the market, competing technologies, and investor appetite are changing.
CastAR’s shared tabletop focus could have differentiated it from solitary VR headsets, but it also increased the cost of outfitting multiple players. Its custom hardware and first-party games could have produced a coherent experience, while requiring the company to finance both the platform and its content. These are business implications of the reported product design, not documented findings from CastAR’s internal records.
Was CastAR officially shut down?
Not through a clear, detailed corporate announcement identified in the contemporaneous reports. Engadget and Ars Technica noted that CastAR had not formally confirmed the closure at the time, while TechCrunch said it sought comment from CastAR and Playground Global. Co-founder Jeri Ellsworth later referred publicly to an “unexpected castAR situation,” but that was not a full corporate explanation of the shutdown.
The strongest evidence came from employee accounts and multiple reports published in late June 2017. It is therefore accurate to say that CastAR ceased operating according to contemporaneous reporting, while being cautious about presenting the event as an official announcement.
Was CastAR bankrupt?
The available reporting does not establish a formal bankruptcy filing. It supports “shut down,” “closed its doors,” and “wound down,” along with reports of technology being offered for sale or liquidation. Those phrases should not be treated as proof of a court-supervised bankruptcy or liquidation proceeding.
The bottom line
CastAR was a promising AR gaming company that grew from Valve-related experimentation into a heavily funded attempt to build a complete shared-play hardware and software platform. It reportedly closed in June 2017 when additional funding failed to materialize after Playground Global stopped providing further support. About 70 people lost their jobs, Eat Sleep Play was closed, and the planned consumer product never reached a broad commercial launch.
Reports say Kickstarter funds were returned to backers. The closure was a financing failure according to the available evidence—not a verified bankruptcy, a Valve shutdown, or proof that the technology itself could never work.
